Britains Top Sitcom

Just been watching this and thought I'd have a go at another poll - lets hope it works ...

The Choice was narrowed down to the following 10 - which would you choose ?

Blackadder
Dad's Army
Fawlty Towers
Good Life
One Foot in the Grave
Only Fools & Horses
Open All Hours
Porridge
Vicar of Dibly
Yes [Prime] Minister

My choice out of them is "One foot in the Grave"

Re: Britains Top Sitcom

I'd have to go for Fawlty Towers ( Flowery ****s )

'Who's Queen?'

Blackadder for me I think :)

Faulty Towers, but only because dinnerladies wasn't in the top 10 :(

G G G G Granville...

Open all hours for me, Ronnie Barker is top. Porridge is a close second.

Marge 11-01-2004 00:24

Re: Britains Top Sitcom

Can't decide between Fawlty Towers and Porridge

Looking at the list it's interesting that they aren't recent programmes, perhaps it was better tv in the "olden days"

Re: Britains Top Sitcom

I'd go for Only fools and horses -every episode a classic and re-watchable endlessly. But how the nthell is Vicar Of Dibley in the final 10 ???? Beyond me !!!!

The (British) sitcoms these days are terrible, hence none got close to the top 10. Mind you - the US ones are just as bad.

Stuart 11-01-2004 00:44

Re: Britains Top Sitcom

I like all of them, but I think Blackadder (specially 2) is the best.

yes - I felt a certain sort of despair seeing the vicar of dibley in there

however, I felt a certain sense of solidarity that 'birds of a feather' did not rank anywhere

I'll climb out under my rock here, and admit I've never heard of any of them, much less seen any of them.

Gimmie Gimmie Gimmie was quite hilarious but its not in the list. But my choice goes to Only fools and horses.

Should have been in the top ten, with Peter Kay's Phoenix Nights.

Re: Britains Top Sitcom

I voted Fawlty Towers mainly because it maintained the very high standard throughout all episodes. Its hard to judge though, Only Fools and Horses has definately given me more laughs than Fawtly Towers but I guess Only Fools gets devalued because of it going downhill.

I was abit annoyed Phoenix Nights and The Office didn't fair higher as I do think they are genuine classics which are up there in the top 5 comedy's of all time, if not the best. I spose it takes time for programs to filter down to everyone though and to get established as classics. My dad still refuses to watch The Office or Phoenix Nights because he doesn't like that sort of stuff, even although he's never watched it.

This is a series on the BBC, anyone else notice that all of the top 10 sitcoms also happen to be BBC shows? I wonder if they had to "rig" it to some degree to avoid having the hassle to getting rights for shows that were originally on other channels.

Anyone else suddenly realise that the sitcom output of British TV these days is just dire?? It takes a program or poll like this to make us realise just how good the programming used to be on our telly :(
I'm with Coggy on Red Dwarf but for longevity of humour and great casting Only Fools and Horses is my choice :)

Fawlty Towers. John Cleese is my lord and master. Actually, all the Monty Python lot are my masters. I salute them all. (I went to school down the same road as the late, great Graham Chapman lived!!)

Re: Britains Top Sitcom

Yes, Red Dwarf for me as well. Fawlty Towers was good, but has been shown sooo many times, it's lost it's appeal for me...

Edit: Red Dwarf ended at 18. Man Behaving Badly at 16.

Re: Britains Top Sitcom

Please, please, please don't let it be Only Fools that comes out on top! Highly overrated IMO. I voted for Fawlty Towers, but would also like to see Yes Minister/Prime Minister come high up too. Paul Eddington was a top comedy actor. Still like The Good Life too.

Damien 27-03-2004 22:58

Re: Britains Top Sitcom

Its being decided as we speak. Here is MY top 3

1. Only Fools and horses - Best ever easly doesnt resort to cheap humor or onne-liners and also has serious aspects e.g. Death, mis-carrage and the characters are more developed than any other comedy and have real depth! Image blackadder or dads army dealing with that! 7 seasons worth of gold.

2. Yes Minster - Underated great script which is secound only to the above. While is might not be the easyest comedy and hard to actually find funny for some people. I thinks its great. Also dispite what you might think you dont need to like politics to like this!

3. Fawlty Towers - Scripts may not be as good as the above but its great physical comedy of clesse!

Forget the actual results who did you want to win and why

Paul 27-03-2004 23:03

Re: Britains Top Sitcom

Since my other Favs have gone - I want Blackadder to win now.

One Foot In The Grave for me, mainly because Victor is my hero and my life is just as crap as his, only mine is real.

Damien 27-03-2004 23:10

Re: Britains Top Sitcom

Actually the poll results are what i think will happen. Only fools, fawlty towers and blackadder in that order. Fair enough.

I dont like the title though It should be Most ppopular comedy as best is not really a good word for it. Especially since yes minster is not in the top 3

Is this britians dumbest comedy or something? Stupid that Fawlty towers is behind vicar of dibley

Whats left then

Dibley has gone, so it's OFAH or Blackadder.

jesus held us if blackadder wins over only fools. Theres no comparsion. Blackadder and only fools are diffrant only fools is a lot more serious and had less laughs per eposide than blackadder but in my view thats its greatness

Re: Britains Top Sitcom

nah, i'am fine

Only fools is great think of the eposide with grandads death for example a mixture of emotions other than comedy. How many comedys make you feel sad and happy in 30 mins.

Rodneys wedding as well. Its like Comedy and Drama at the same time.
Blackadder and fawtly towers cannot do this.

Theres more to TV than quick laughs.

Other shows which are great are dramas such as State of play, BBC One-off dramas, sometimes ITV dramas.

Also Drama films
-Shawshank redemtion
-Green Mile
-Painist
-Mystic river

Drama Rocks as does comedy.

I LOVE ONLY FOOLS

sorry bout that

<snip>

Yeah, but we are talking about Comedy (which can be just quickly laughs). Fools and Horses was good in the late eighties and early nineties (specially the episode where Del bought a load of dodgy blow up dolls), but in recent times, it has been over sentimental.

I just happen to think Blackadder and Fawlty towers (neither of which have, IMO, aged).

comedy is more effective if you have real characters with depth. anyway its greatest sitcom

I never liked the office. Mainly because when I first watched it, I thought it was a real documentry, and formed an immediate opinion, without giving the program time to make itself obvious to me.

Still, my top 3 would be:

Red Dwarf (love Listers hair)
Blackadder (Because I am currently trying to grow his beard from the first series)
Only Fool's and Horses.

It was a fix! The Vicar was going to be voted off with the least amount of votes with Porridge & Yes Minister, but somehow made it to number 3  It's a travesty of justice, Brian, that Fawlty Towers only made it to number 5 :( I suppose we've got lots of OFAH repeats to look forward to now  Still what are Saturday nights on the BBC for?

Yes Minister should have been higher as well, I'd put money on the fact that the Government is exactly like it is portrayed in the programme :D

EDIT: 100 posts, Excellent.....

Top 3 for me

Yes Minister
Faulty Towers
Porridge

And I agree with Mr Burns that the result was a fix. I think Carol Vorderman on her knees had a lot to do with Dibley coming 3rd.

voting for one is hard....but voting for the best bit from each sitcom would be better..........my fave clip from dads army is where pike is singing "hitler has only got one ball" to the german captain who aks him his name....and mainwaring replys "dont tell him pike"
basil beating the car in flowery tw*ts......
captain flashheart in blackadder2....
the puddle in dibley......
the skip with the 2cv in it from one foot in the grave
the blow-up dolls in only fools

Or, almost any of the scenes with Queenie in Black Adder 2...
The whole episode with the Germans in Fawlty Towers... German:"Will you stop going on about the war?".
Basil : "You started it!"
German: "No we didn't!"
Basil : "Yes, you did, you invaded Poland!". Pure class..
