It doesn't really amaze me tbh. It's okay but I would never pay money for it. Half the links don't work either.

Disable pop-ups - disable firewall - re configure antivirus and some of the sites might allow you to form an opinion

Re: BroadBand Plus... Opinions?

I may, after significant effort, do all those things and it may work. But why should I disable my firewall, it's there for protection. If the website doesn't work with a firewall then there should be clear notices about which ports to open to access the content, or it should be made so it works with antivirus software.

If a paying customer can be bothered to do all that stuff and fiddle about to get it to work I will be very suprised. It should work straigh away in most cases.

And imagine a noob. Like they are going to be able disable their firewall/anti-virus/.popup killer to view this site and then re-enable it after so they are secure.

Only had to allow pop-ups from the broadband plus pages, never touched my firewall or av.

It looks pretty good to me, signed up for the 3 month trial about a week ago

I've signed up for the free trial also, and I think it has it's benefits to some people - especially those with school age children. But the music and gaming sections are in my opinion a bit pap. As I have school age children I'll continue to subscribe once the trial is over.

I had to configure my firewall (Norton) to allow details of visited sites to be passed on to the content providers. I assume the websites of the content providers (ie. Vidzone, or whoever) check to make sure that you have just visited the bb+ site and managed to log in before they allow you access to their content.

IMO the service isn't worth the money and will just be used by CS-R's as a another bargaining chip with customers over their complaints. They currently use the talk packages or upgrades in speed to keep their customers happy when a complaint is logged I guess this will be the next service to be used like this.

I can't stand people that block referers. As a website admin it's become really apparent over the last few months that more and more people are doing it as I get logs with referer "ASSAFADLKJFSDLKGGLKJ" or "1" etc.

Bugs the hell out of me :p

Paul 20-12-2003 21:48

Re: BroadBand Plus... Opinions?

I know exactly how you feel - I get some real crap in my logs these days. :(

Re: BroadBand Plus... Opinions?

Obviously they feel violated or have some other privacy issues.

Not entirely sure why, after all it's not like most webadmins care. I simply only look to see from where people are coming to see why they are coming from there etc. Advertising and the like :)

It's all good :D

Tell me about it. Our firewal etc at work is setup not to send referers, means when I try out some of the things I'm doing for a new website from work, it doesnt work correctly as it doesn't know where it came from (not even if it's come from my ouw site)

And no, I'm not the person who sets up the security & firewalls!

Hi M8

I will have to disagree with that one. If a user does not want to tell sites where he/she has been or give information about there windows then it should not be given.

All that needs to be given is vital info like java ver. screen res ect so webmins can make java and other apps work correctly.

What if everytime you took your car to the garage they were able to download a complete list of every place you have been and at what time !! Worse still !!!! What if the wife could print the log :naughty: :naughty:

Just my feelings on the subject - for what its worth

Re: BroadBand Plus... Opinions?

Game - one of the online gaming jobbies on the BB+ thingy are shutting up shop for multiplayer gaming.......

"GAME Multiplayer and BarrysWorld Closure
We are sad to announce that the Multiplayer service will be closing on 23rd January 2004. After nearly three years of operating the service, in its various guises, we've made the decision to focus our online activity on core e-commerce services, both in the UK and Europe.

The Multiplayer Team would like to thank everyone who helped build The Multiplayer Service into the award-winning operation it is today, especially all of the dedicated volunteers who have given their time and effort to the Service over the years - we couldn't have done it without you.

We know you will have a number of questions about the closure and we will be available on IRC (#GAME.NET) on January 5th to answer your questions. We have also prepared a FAQ to answer some basic queries, as well as the information below on how and when various services will be affected and how customers eligible for a refund can claim.

Before all Multiplayer services are turned off on the 23rd January you may need to take further action if you use one of the services listed below, please check these points:

Subscription
All subscription services will terminate on the 23rd January. Visit our Refund Page before the 23rd January to find out if you are eligible for a refund.

GAMEBank (formerly BarryBank)
Unused credits in GAMEBank may be refunded. Visit our Refund Page before the 23rd January to find out if you are eligible for a refund.

Please Note: Submitting a refund request on the Refund Page also freezes your GAMEBank account - so ensure you have done any transfers between members prior to this.

Also Note: We will only refund unused credits to the owner of the credits, if you need to return or redistribute credits between members, it is your responsibility to do this.

Clan Servers
We are now not accepting renewals for existing clan servers. All existing clan servers will have their rental extended to the 23rd January, when they will all be switched off.

We'd like to apologise to all of you on the waiting list who didn't get chance to try our Clan Servers. We're proud of our Clan Servers and the huge popularity they gained in such a short time. We wish you all the best finding an alternative provider.

Hosted Sites
All hosted sites will be disabled on the 23rd January. Hosted Site owners need to download the contents of their sites before this date.

Email accounts
All @barrysworld.com and @my.game.net email accounts will be disabled on the 23rd of January. Don't forget to inform people in your address books and any web sites you have registered with using this email address.

Game Servers
All game servers will be switched off on the 23rd January, they will be left running until this point to honour any existing leagues and bookings.

signing out,

The GAME Multiplayer Team

Re: BroadBand Plus... Opinions?

Except I can't download a list of everywhere you've been, merely what site linked to my site. A pretty reasonable request if you ask me :)

Also Windows information, whilst OS isn't particuarly vital, screen resolution, colour depth and browser DEFINATELY are! I know, through stats that my average user is *still* 800x600, 65536 colours using MS IE 5.0.

Java version isn't terribly important to be honest. If anything the most important details are:

Browser and renderer version number.
Resolution.
Colour depth.
Referer, especially important for sites that monitor how they are doing in search engine referrals, advertising schemes etc. Also nice to see who is spreading the word, so that you can repay the favour.

Just my two euro cents.

I'm not even going to bother with the service. I give NTL enough each month as it is. :D

But this analagy sucks. You have the car (the PC). This does record the history of where its been if you so choose and if you took the garage (PC Service centre), they could print out where its been. Certainly if your wife is PC savvy she could print the log.

An individual sites web log is more analagous to a car park which with cctv and credit card payment would know when you are in there and for how long. They don't know where you go when you leave.

Re: BroadBand Plus... Opinions?

I've just put the trial on - mainly I have to say so I could look at the espresso content for work (thinking of getting it there). I have to say there doesn't seem to be much there that you couldn't get for free... it seems to be marketed at the same sort of people AOL's content was.. the stuff I promptly ignored and minimized when I was on that ISP... but hey - it's free for 3 months... free is good :D
