It's not often we see you post. ;)

I suspect you're using an older version of WLM, so i think you should try downloading the latest version from http://get.live.com/messenger/overview but uninstall the other one first. The latest version is 8.0.0.812.00, you can check yours from the main WLM window by clicking Help/about messenger

Hope that fixes it.

Was it ok with the older version?

I've purposely not updated until I find out if its running ok for other people. Could it just be teething problems with the updated version??

I'm not sure what version of windows is needed for 'offline messages', but what do you have?

Mines actually greyed out too, but i think i can still send and receive offline messages. When someone has sent me one a box pops up to warn me on logging in. I think this was an option you had to set upon installing this.

See below.

Hi All,
I have it working OK but I did have a short time where I had the same thing happening.I seem to remember that it was put right by giving permissions in the Firewall. There were four or five things that I had to give permission to. Sadly I can't remember what. I'll go through and if I find it I'll post it up.
Regards, George.

Re: Windows live messenger problem

I had that problem as well recently but only on one out of 3 machines i use msn on! I added someone on one machine fine, then go home use my home machine and the person isnt there. I remote desktop into the work one and they're online. so i get them to talk to me once i've signed in back home.

They can talk to me as normal but it says the person is not on your list click to add them, i do and nothing happens.

So i reinstall msn on that machine, and now it just doesn't sign in at all just sits there doing nothing! oops. It wont sign into any of my accounts
I booted into vista on that machine and was able to sign in fine so its not the connection.

I've not had either of those problems, but I have had a problem with file transfers. When I send a file and it shows up in the chat text part of the conversation window, and the other person gets to Accept or Cancel it, they often don't see it. I'm there saying "accept it then" and they're replying with "accept what?!" grrr. I have to exit Messenger and restart it.

AntiSilence, do you have ZoneAlarm with IM Security? If so, some versions cause an issue with file transfer, along with video conversations, and the avatars.

I have ZoneAlarm Security Suite 6.5 and this has the problem. There are workarounds. Zonelabs say downgrading to 6.1 will fix it (great, eh?) but there's also a workaround available via a link on their user forums, which involves hacking IM Security.

I've not bothered with either fix as I only tend to use Messenger for text chat, so I can't comment on what issues there may be.

Nope, not using ZoneAlarm. I've got a hardware firewall in my router and I use the XP SP2 firewall. Both are configured for MSN file transfers and video chats etc. The problem seems to not occur so much since moving from MSN Messenger to Live Messenger.
