NTL want me to try Googlemail????
Do you guys know if this is a scam or real?
The email header was : xxxxxxx.ispmail.private.ntl.com (I blocked some of it out) Quote:

Re: NTL want me to try Googlemail????
Rubbish.
|
Re: NTL want me to try Googlemail????
it screams scam to me, firstly afaik everyone calls it gmail and ntl world wouldn't be written as ntlWorld (no capital W)
i'd stay clear |
Re: NTL want me to try Googlemail????
Looks ok to me, aspecially as the header had ispmail.private.ntl.com. What was the link BTW, was it from esmaker.com by any chance?

and whilst you are doing this we will look after all your pin numbers and passwords.
A scam !!!!!!!! |
Re: NTL want me to try Googlemail????
Sorry but it just looks and feels like a scam to me. Personally i would not touch it with a 10 foot barge pole.
I use Gmail and it has never let me down unlike NTL email. If they are thinking of using Google then its a big step for them as they will be admitting at last that there email system is pants |
Re: NTL want me to try Googlemail????
I agree - why would an ISP offer a trial with another email provider??
I have both gmail& NTL mail - I know which I prefer! Don't get any offers for 'enhancements' or pfishing with gmail :p: |
Re: NTL want me to try Googlemail????
RE the link
All of the reference companies other than ntl are swedish, the web site is very poor and I don't think a company like ntl would use a 3rd party like that to send out a limited trial when they have their own trials teams. |

I'm going to say this again, this is not a scam. I am sure a moderator can confirm this once they have contacted ntl. |

https://www.google.com/hosted/FAQ if so, NTL would seem to have nothing to lose by trialling it? |
Re: NTL want me to try Googlemail????
I'm glad I asked the question. It seemed initially like a scam but less so the more it went on.
When I followed the link, it just asked for name, email address and telephone number. What use would just that be for a scam? I'd appreciate some inside knowledge on this though. :tu: |

not entirely sure which ntl are doing but, if they intend on using gmail to host the @ntlworld.com accounts, are you sure google will like it? (ie hosting mail for an entire isp). Or, are ntl just getting people to use it, and report back what they like so they can jazz up their own webmail? |

it works pretty well ive been using it for my domain email for a while now :) now i don't have to worry about losing my emails if my server goes down or how much diskspace im using, i let google worry about it instead :D also a few friends have started using this to offer email accounts to their forum staff without having to worry about the space/bandwidth constraints :tu: |

Oh and i am sure the NTL email is classed as free by NTL, Lame i know but there has been a whole thread on the subject here or on .COM cannot remember and cannot be arsed to search for it. |

same here, i figure everything else probably scans an email as it travels though the internet so whats the difference of letting a bot scan it to display if google scanning my emails with a bot to target ads means i get a huge mailbox for free + the ablity to search though that huge mailbox then i'm not complaining. and they've got a pretty decent spam filter, 1 or 2 slip though occasionally but it seems to catch most of the spam :) |
Re: NTL want me to try Googlemail????
Crikey, can´t keep anyway from this place even on my jollies :erm:
Just to confirm this is NOT a scam. ntl were asking for triallists amongst staff and were mailing a number of customers asking them to trial as well this email thingy, if still in doubt ring CS and they can happily confirm it :tu: |

only thing is doesn't google hosted need the mx records to be changed? can that be done for just an indervidual email address? i thought they were done by domain  |
Re: NTL want me to try Googlemail????
Looking at GMail you can add additional accounts to a Gmail account for POP/SMTP access so this is prolly how theyre doing it
|
Re: NTL want me to try Googlemail????
Quote:
:erm: thats to send emails so that they appear to come from the other account. you cannot simply add an account in google and have the mail turn up there, you need to setup either a forward or change the MX entry so that the email gets routed to another server. You may very well be able to change an Mx entry for a single email address, i've never tryed it for anything but a whole domain! |
Re: NTL want me to try Googlemail????
1) I use gmail in addition to the ntl accounts and my email client (kontact - I use Linux) just pulls everything into one inbox. It also then removes them from the remote inbox.
2) GMail uses encrypted links to the email client so less chance for snooping, other than past GMail and Google themselves. 3) I have a domain and the registrar lets me specify email redirects by user, with upto 3 forward addresses per emain name. I'm sorely tempted to forward all my emails to GMail. 4) If you do you GMail then you can still send emails when not on ntl's network. You do need to authenticate you to SMTP which isn't needed with ntl's as they only let people on their network send. |

Re: NTL want me to try Googlemail????
If it isn't a scam, it's a terribly badly written email.

Re: NTL want me to try Googlemail????
I got the same e-mail today. Bottom line, scam or not?

Re: NTL want me to try Googlemail????
Hi,
We are currently reviewing the format of the web based email service we provide to our customers. Google, Yahoo and Hotmail are some of the interface types we're looking at and we'd love to get some feedback about them. This is where you come in. If you are interested we would love to provide you with access to Googlemail and to get your feedback. So what will we do: We will provide you with access to a new Googlemail account We will set this up so that your current ntlWorld email arrives in your new account (your access to email through our service will be frozen for the duration of the trial and unfrozen when it finishes) We will explain how to set it up so that you can send email as if from your ntlWorld address We will provide you with a freephone helpline in case you get stuck We will credit your bill by £30 for your trouble once we have received your survey feedback What would we like in return: We would like you to use the Googlemail account we give you continuously for 4 weeks instead of your normal email We would like you to take part in an online survey to give us your open and honest opinions about the system We may call you to request your participation in a face-to-face discussion (these will be limited to a handful of participants) If you are interested and can spare the time, or have family who could give it a go for us, please let us know by going to the following web page and completing our Email Trial Registration form - it will take you less than 1 minute to complete! http://www.esmaker.com/nx/Public/Sur...1-de10fdae37e2 Once we have enough people registered we will email you regarding the next steps, which will be within the next 14 days. The registration form will be deactivated on Monday 28th August or once we have received enough volunteers. We look forward to hearing from you. Thanks, the team at ntlWorld ---------- Post added at 09:10 ---------- Previous post was at 09:10 ---------- Quote:

Re: NTL want me to try Googlemail????
NTL confirmed mine as a scam today. I first received a phone call, then a follow-up email a bit like yours.
But where do they make their money? On the help line (premium rate number?) Jim |

First spoke to Customer Services who put me through to Technical Support - I don't have a specific name, though.
Do you know which unit in ntl has set the trial up, because those two areas don't know about it. Jim |

Re: NTL want me to try Googlemail????
> Oh, and BTW, welcome to the forum
Thanks a lot! :) The more I look at this, and despite what ntl told me, I'm thinking that this is a valid trial (as you said), but that it has been put together in a way that makes a customer quite suspicious:- - the email gives no indication that it is genuinely from ntl (the "return path" is the only sign - "do_not_reply@ntlworld.com" - and that can easily be faked. The originating email address is 20060906095117.65BB42030AF@blubber.cableinet.net. The number is not suspicious, but the blubber bit is!! :erm: - it is not signed off by anybody, not even "The ntl team" - it just ends "Thank you" - the link sends you to a domain that is still being processed (according to a "WHOIS" query. - the original telephone request asks you for a non-ntl email address - why? ...and once your concerns are aroused you start to read all sorts of things into every (possibly innocent) paragraph!! I'll look into it further and post the outcome here. Might take a day or two as I'm away from base tomorrow. Jim |

The "blubber" bit could be the server, but I think your comments are fair. I agree that customers should be suspicious about emails inviting them to go here, or click a link there. I know though that ntl use the esmaker.com service to run polls and surverys. The other point to mention is that google are inviting domain owners to trail their webmail service in connection with hostmaster domains, so this trial may be in conjunction with that, as pointed out in a previous post in this thread. :) |
Re: NTL want me to try Googlemail????
Finally got to the bottom of it - it is genuine. I posted a note to ntl using their web-based form and in the autoresponder reply was the following text:-
Latest News and Ongoing Issues **************************************** 22 Aug 2006 If you receive an email that has the basic header like this: From: do_not_reply@ntlworld.com Date: 2006/08/22 Tue AM 11:06:43 GMT To: Ntlworld email Customers Subject: Join our email trial - your chance to shape our future Please be advised that it is genuine, and is an invitation to trial a new web based email service. __________________________________________________ Now to decide if I can be bothered to do it after all that hassle! ;) Jim |

yup emailed ntl and it is genuine, that was a while ago anyone heard anything more?
|
Re: NTL want me to try Googlemail????
Yes - I received an email and set up a Gmail account. I ran it for a while and then had someone come round and interview me on what I thought about it.
I think it maybe over now - they said they weren't looking for any more triallists. Jim |
