They do that because all their competitors for that business will also be offering freephone tech support, etc.

Just as their competitors all charge for the calls to support on residential services ;)

Who?

BT telco/vision (0800 800 150), Vonage (0800 008 6000), TalkTalk (0800 049 5050), Bulldog ( 0800 404 8151), Be (0808 234 8566) and even Sky (0800 587 5707) if you look hard enough. There's mobile companies too but I won't list them as Virgin currently only charge 10p per call to their CS.

Just a few examples of how it should be done! :D

I have to do it the hard way - I keep a monthly log of the chargeable calls I usually have to make to NTL than ask for a bill credit to reflect that asmount. The fact they jusrify it by saying 'Sky charge national rates' seems to be desperate measures, especially as the revenue earning potential of these numbers is shortly to disappear with OFTEL hoping they all move on to the new 05 code.

Oh it is when you can call them for free on 0800 587 5707 (enter rubbish twice and you get through).

Desperate indeed

I was talking about their justification of Sky using it. The number I provided is for Sky ;)

As an update, and possibly to close the thread - you can now call NTL for free officially,

150 - Customer Services
151 - Faults

This is due to be rolled out in all franchise areas from early Octoiber, however is is already 'live' in Glasgow. The 0845 route only lasted 5 months, so it shows what pester power can do!

Eh. Hasn't this always existed in some areas ;)

Virgin don't even charge it, they say they do, but everytime i've rung form my mobile to them, it's been free :)

o2 however... That was a different story!

Not that I'm aware - indeed the website and even the CF 'Contact' details only gave the 0845 numbers. These short codes (which mirrored the BT equivalents) were removed from many franchise areas, and I can confirm that Glasgow and Belfast had these codes barred right up until last week.

The new number will also alow TW customers to call their cust services and faults. Another new thing to bring the 2 companies in line with each other.

150 must be a Diamond Cable thing then that has just carried on, I'm pretty sure this has been the number ever since the year AD.

That NTL had reverted to free CS/.Faults? The NTL Celtic franchises removed all 150 access and replaced it with 0800 - which still wouldn;t cost them anything unless it was a cross network call. As for TW in Central Scotland, the short codes similarly removed even before the rumoured merger/takeover.

Bottom line? At least the free number is active across the company as a whole, none of this nasty discrimination!

Oh I didn't say it had happened, I thought the re-introduction of 150 was a possibility :)

Well its actually NTL:Telewest for the moment until the Virgin rebranding next year. However residential customers still see them as seperate companies, its only their advertising that tends to show both. Bills and stuff still show NTL or Telewest.

Its only NTL Business that is now branded as NTL:Telewest Business.

Well I've just tried 151 but I only get BT's fault reporting system & that was thru' 1 of ntl's little 'smart dialler' boxes. Is there now an 0800 number you can use to report faults? I've been trying to access ntlworld since Sat. on 08089909877 but keep getting the engaged signal, I've managed 2 access the internet via the backup no. 08005190100 but I can't download emails with this no. Maybe Staines has finally lost it's dialup capability. :( Any ideas?

Cheers

Sorry if it wasn't made clear - the dial codes refer only to NTL lines, NOT those provided by a third party (in your case, BT). Also the new codes are not for Internet or Broadband faults, those numbers are unchanged.

You know, I was thinking that to.
When I used to see posts about "no more 150/151" I'm always sure the last time I called ntl (from home) I used 150, and not too long ago.

Could just be me going :dozey: tho... thats why I never posted about it before!!!

Do we still use the 0845 numbers when dialling from a BT line or is there a 0800 equivalent?

I was just wondering about what to do if my phone line went down ;)

So I guess that NTL have received a number of calls where the caller has hung up straight away or did you all upgrade your package while you were on? ;)

There's a bit of confusion here - you are actually a BT Customer for your telephone line service, NTL only provide services that are either dialled with a prefix or using CPS (Carrier Pre-Selection). If you're phone line goes down, it's BT that must repair it (151 for faults and whoever answers will be responsible for fixing it!)

Sorry, I didn't phrase my post right...

What I meant was if my ntl line went down and I had to ring faults on BT or mobile line, is there a 0800 equivalent or do we still have to the 0845?

Sorry... :)

Sorry... :)

What do you want... jam on it ?;)

You'd have to fall back on the 0845 to make contact via a different carrier. Not ideal, I grant you - but I very rarely lose phone service, TV and BB are usually the first to go! Incidentally, they might also have the good sense to permit you to call 150/151 when your line is barred for yet another billing error....!

Thanx 4 the clarification Okonski, finally got an internet connection this am. but if I was still unable to connect, I assume NTL would want me 2 call their 0901 no. at £1/min. for a technical query. Still not sure that any service provider who is taking a customer's money, should charge them for finding out why the service they're paying 4 is not being provided! Is it me? ;)

Cheers

Of course it's not you! That's why NTL provide a FREE telephone number to advise callers if there are connectivity issues. Call 0800 052 4315, from memory this provides a menu to select whether you're a BB or dial-up customer and advises of the outage periods. Support on 0901 is one thing, and if they have to charge that's a good a way as any, but if you just ewant to know if it is them or you, the 0800 works well!
