Courtesy call from NTL - £10 fine if your late paying your bill !
Damn whats with this company i've been with them 10+ years never once been cut off or had trouble other than the times they've had monthly caps.
Since about April I've had nothing but trouble, cut off a week cause I paid my bill the day after I should have done, and they couldnt confirm my payment due to me paying via paypoint card. Had trouble last month over being billed for Premiership plus. Had my phone calls turned to incoming only due to my bill going over £100, even though every other year since sky have had pay-per-view football you've had to phone up to say you wanted it, this year for some odd reason they just did it automaticly. Then today got a automated phone call saying any late payment of the bill will mean they charge us a £10 fine. (is this actually legal to charge people fines for services being paid late). Its not like I pay late every month I guess around 3-4 times in 10 years, I mean everyone has hard times finding money, just a little tight right now putting money aside to get school uniforms for 4 kids. All this payment crap alongside the cost going up and me repeatedly trying to get my cable TV reception upto scratch for months (the local kids play near the outside green cab box on end of our street, which causes my tv to freeze). As pushed me to my limits and left me angry at NT-hell  |
Re: Courtesy call from NTL - £10 fine if your late paying your bill !
firstly with paying late, to me if its a day late or a year late, its still a late payment. If they let people off with being a day late, people would start wanting 2 days etc. Afaik, with a late payment you can be fined, kicked off, whatever ntl want to do as long as you've been told of the consequences (which you did).
secondly, with the premiership plus, wasn't last year dont automatically? I do know for a fact that for after the season ended, pplus showed a message saying details about next year would follow on the channel. Sure enough they did, and it mentioned that it would be added automatically again. To me having ntl do pplus automatically every year is just like them doing the tv package automatically every month. I'm sure its easier for you and cheaper as there is no phone call to make now. |
Re: Courtesy call from NTL - £10 fine if your late paying your bill !
phone them and tell them that you're not happy with the £10 charge, my sister did and they dropped it this time. Worth a try, all they can say is yes or no.

Re: Courtesy call from NTL - £10 fine if your late paying your bill !
My mum got a courtesy call about her bill payment being late, but she was only 3 days late in paying it, NOT 21 days. She rang them and told them she had paid it via phone banking and they didn't charge her.

Re: Courtesy call from NTL - £10 fine if your late paying your bill !
I spent half an hour last Friday discussing this very topic with NTL. The automated messages states that you will be charged £10 if you are 28 days late paying your bill. This is a lie. They do not take it from the payment due date as you expect from the way they phrase things, but from the invoice date which is 14 days earlier.
Having had a big discussion with a supervisor over this and coming to an arrangement (credit of £20), I paid my bill via online banking as I was speaking to the lady. I was assured I would not be disconnected as I was paying for the current bill which I had yet to receive. Today I tried to make a phone call around 8:30pm and my phone is disconnected and my TV is terrestrial only. Aaaaaarrrrrrgggggghhhhh. I guess they wanted their £20 back. |
Re: Courtesy call from NTL - £10 fine if your late paying your bill !
Paying by DD no good from my experience anyway.Been without with internet for 4 weeks.Because NTL didn't take payment from my bank.Checked with my bank they said there was no problem with my DD and NTL had not taken any money from my account.Have a another DD for tv and telephone that been going though ok.Was told that two weeks ago that payment would be taken from bank and nothing happen.Been with my bank for for over 10 years and this is the first time there been any problems and I know it's not from my bank end.In the end had to make a card payment to get them to switch it back on.Had no warning e-mail no phone call nothing just got cut off.

Re: Courtesy call from NTL - £10 fine if your late paying your bill !
the late payment fee is added onto an account if there is a balance outstadning when the next bill is produced.
the money has to have reached ntl ny this time, not pay by paypoint the day before as it can take 3-5 days to clear. If it is the first time that you have recieved a late payment fee, generally it will be credited back to you. However if you have recieved one in the past you are cleary aware of how and why you get them and how to avoid them, so you get no sympathey from me. |

Re: Courtesy call from NTL - £10 fine if your late paying your bill !
I wouldn't mind, but they have a Payment Due date on the invoice which as far as I am concerned is the date at which the start of the late payment should begin. That is when the money is due. It says so. It is written in plain English. If I pay the money before the due date I have paid early, if I pay after I am paying late. Therefore 28 days late is 28 days after the Payment Due Date.

however when it is clearly the first instance and there are no notes in the account saying that it has been credited (and i will always clearly note that i have credited a late payment fee) then in that instance as a good will gesture i would credit it back. so its not personal, if a customer is aware of the late payment and they know how to avoid it then you cant complain when one is added on the account if you have paid late. |

An assumption has been made that because it is 'standard within the industry' that the invoice date is the real date, everyone must know. I would be more convinced if NTL just came out and said it's a way of generating extra income from all you inconvenient B******S who can't pay by DD. |
Re: Courtesy call from NTL - £10 fine if your late paying your bill !
Oh and here is the final irony. After talking on the phone for ½ hour on Friday sorting everything out and letting them no I had made a payment, the Credit Department rang me yesterday to ask when I was going to pay. Having told them that I made a payment by online banking on Friday I asked why I had been cut off as I had been assured that I wouldn't be and the best answer I could get was 'I can't do anything about it until your payment is cleared. Try ringing back on Friday'.

however its not true, as the second you press any single diget, their computer voice kicks in and says " the number you have dialed has not been recognised, please try again". the system is all geared up to the benefit of ntl only, id hate to be in a position to have the need to phone emergency services on the ntl phone once they place this incomeing calls only blocking on your phone. the fact is staff are giving out false information and you could be placed in danger if you were to take their 'you can still call emergency services' as the truth and need to put that to the test. |

no one begrudges ntl:tw making a reasonable profit, after all thats what payes the wages, people make the company and its people that cause the problems (or try and fix them as you do from time to time) however simple it might be to fix, they know its wrong but do nothing as its to much trouble. as for your vote with your feet, as you well know, ntl:tw are the only cable company that cover 50% + of the UK and there is no other cable company any more to goto for the average UK end user, if they go then ntl get let off the hook, wereas if they stay they might have a case to force NTL:tw to clean up their act for everyones benefit. after reading several threads on cable forum over the last few days im begining to wonder if its worth taking the time to discuss any of these valid points as the people responding seem set in their views and come across as unmovable even in the light of new points of view never mind facts, i always thought this place was good for helping people, but it appears not any more, other than trivial stuff, arr well.................. |
Re: Courtesy call from NTL - £10 fine if your late paying your bill !
Well since writing this letter, Ive had more trouble the 2 weeks I was cut off for I ended up having to pay £20 reconnection fee, as well as £10 for paying my bill late.
So for a month I only had 2 weeks service I ended up paying £30 as well as my £85 per month bill. Shocking considering as soon as I noticed I was late I paid but due to it being paid via paypoint stopped them switching me on over the phone. Well hope theyre happy with the extra £30 cause we are switching to sky. If this is how they treated a customer of over 10 years who paid their bill one day late then dread to think how they treat those poor 12 months bound contract ones. They may get away with these cheap tactics once but they'll pay for it later down the line when theyve no one left to rip off. I'll go with sky and take up their 16mb broadband service for £10per month much cheaper tv and net service and a £5 cost of umlimited landline calls per month, fingers crossed sky have respect for their customers more than ntl ended up having. Its sad cause 6 months back we never had an ounce of trouble with payments to ntl if we was late you'd get a courtesy call saying your payment was overdue, now its cut and your fined & treated like a criminal instead of a customer. P.S. I don't want to end totally bitter for most my 10 years the service was always on and ran flawless. But its not just me with these billing cost issues, everyone I knew (around 10 or so) who used NTL have complaints and either left or planning on leaving, things like phoning up and asking to be put on the £30 per month package and still being billed for full, or because the cost of everything with ntl as gone up so much when other companys are bringing out cheaper packages. |
Re: Courtesy call from NTL - £10 fine if your late paying your bill !
Hi! first post on this forum, been an NTL sufferer for a few years now and like many other people have landed up with a £10 late payment charge, challenged NTL who refused to remove it (surprise, surprise!)
From reading this thread it seems like a few people do not have an understanding of the law regarding contracts (like the one you all have with NTL) Quote:
So before we go any further I'd like to tell you that excess charges are not legally enforceable if they are penalties. Penalty clauses in contracts in English (and Scottish) law for breach of contract are not legal if the penalty exceeds the actual cost of the breach of either party. What this means is this, does anybody on this forum believe it costs NTL £10 cos you paid your bill late? Let me answer that for you!........NO! Try this, next time you speak to C/S ask them for a break down of the late payment charge they will refuse and refer you to the NTL web site for the full T & Cs or offer to post it to you, where you'll find that you still have no breakdown of the charge, other than this "6.2 If you do not make your payments on time, we may charge you a reasonable fee for late and/or non payment." £10 reasonable?..........not in my life time! I've requested NTL provide me with a breakdown of the late payment charge several times and they have failed, therefore I'm about to get all legal on their butt (can't say ass!) I will keep you posted about my dealings with NTL. Also while I'm at it the £4 admin charge for non DD, costs them £4 to process my payment on their automated service?......admin charge or penalty?........hmm let me think! Sorry my first post is so long but it angers me when large companies bully the little guy in the street, and then you get other people that have been brainwashed by said big companies and agree with their policies even if it does break the law! Here is the link to the web T & Cs http://www.home.ntl.com/content/ebiz...es/changes.doc |

Re: Courtesy call from NTL - £10 fine if your late paying your bill !
i still dont really get what the problem is. pretty much everyone on this forum at least knows what the late payment fee is. therefore know how to avoid it.
if due to circumstances you have to pay late, then you should accept there will be a penalty, if you dont pay the minimum charge on your credit card do you get a charge? why should anything else be any different. with regards to the breakdown of the non DD and late payment fee, i personally couldnt give you that info, but i would bet that the legal department could. it has been in force for months, have you heard of anyone successfully challenging this? as i have said before on certain occasions they are removed, as good will gestures, but if you pay late regularly that would stop and i can almost guarantee that it wouldnt be refunded through legal proceedings |

According to a leaflet that came though my door a few months ago NTL have approx 5 million customers, So if we assume Ntl have a similer amount of customers paying by DD (48%) if does not take long to work out that at £4.00 a month Ntl stand to make 9 to 10 million a month, that in no way can be justified as fair. I have voted with my feet (at least i hope i have) and cancelled, but i do have grave concerns for people on low incomes, pensioners etc,who may not be able to have the benefit of DD. I have contacted OFCOM stating these very points and was told that they are looking into it |
Re: Courtesy call from NTL - £10 fine if your late paying your bill !
i think its a fair point about the non DD charge as some people dont have a choice if they cannot set up a DD with thier bank,
but the late payment fee is avoidable if the bill is paid on time |

Re: Courtesy call from NTL - £10 fine if your late paying your bill !
I've now been a costomer of NTL (Cabletel originally) for 15 years, and during this time NTL have had a continuous process of changing their terms and conditions - at each stage the benefits to the consumer have become eroded, and what ntl can do against you (as a customer) has been strengthened. It is very difficult to hold respect for a company that makes no account of your loyalty and previous contribution to profits, and then do the following;
1) Report any late payment or disconnection to a credit reference agency, whilst 2) Charging you £10 for paying 'late' 3) Charging you £20 for 'Reconnection' after a computer has turned off your services, which could mean the total loss of TV, telephone and Broadband. 4) Charging you an additional £48 each year because you didn't make payment by one of their 'preferred' methods. 5) Remove the ability to contact Faults, Customer Service and Sales at no cost either via short code, or an 0800 Freefone number. 6) Print a monthly invoice that for some reason takes exactly 7 days before you receive it (my Invoice is always dated around 14th of each month, but NEVER arrives before 21st). The effects are cumulative, I wait to be corrected, but should you have a billing issue that requires investigation there is every likelyhood that ntl will not resolve the issue and advise the correct payment due - the 'system' takes over and fines are stancked up ready to hit you on the next bill, starting the dispute all over again. My last action was I had a billing overcharge, and on taking it up with CS was advised the amount would be credited to my account, so I could pay the remaining balance, which I did. Within a week I received a letter stating I had underpaid by £20 (the amount overcharged and supposedly credited). I responded to the letter writer, pointing out the error. I received a folllow-up letter stating my services would be interrupted if I did not pay the £20 by return, I responded again, stating there was no outstanding balance, and serving notice that should by services be disrupted I would reserve the right to charge ntl £50 per day for the loss of all three services. Needless to say, the services were removed and it took 3 days to get them back on (and without paying them the £20 not owed). I demanded £150 for service loss and complained directly to Manchester. The end result was a bill credit of £50, plus package enhancements that made the arrangement for £162, so honour was satisfied. Then the next bill arrived, complete with a £20 'fine' for service disconnection, which was applied 2 weeks after the compensation was paid. Calling CS to point out the error, I was told that irrespective of whether ntl had compensated me for the loss of service, the £20 fine was still justified. Back to Manchester again, and they were prepared to waive the fee. The bottom line is I and many other customer spend a great deal of time and effort looking after our finances, yet at every turn ntl and companies like them use every trick in the book to lever extra ÃƒÆ’Ã¢â‚¬Å¡Ãƒâ€šÃ‚Â£ÃƒÆ ’‚£Ãà¢â‚¬Å¡Ãƒâ€šÃ‚£'s because the bulk of us will just roll over. Don't let them get away with it Finally, do remember getting ntl to provide you with all services leaves you at the mercy of a communications black hole should they get it wrong (and they do). The prospect of finding my mobile phone going dead also because of some imagined billing issue just doesn't bear thinking about! |
Re: Courtesy call from NTL - £10 fine if your late paying your bill !
ntl will state in there contract that any miss payment can lead to disconnection and the possibility of admistering an administration charge. Don't ask me where in the contract, I know exactly were it states this is the company i work for contract

a lot of people have mentioned the illegality of charging £10. as ive mentioned before if you pay on time you can easily avoid it.
however if you feel so strongly about it, why not put your money where your mouth is so to speak, take ntl to court and make a president, if your that confident you'll win im sure a lot of people will thank you. |

Re: Courtesy call from NTL - £10 fine if your late paying your bill !
no the conditions are not hidden, just to point out here i do not work for ntl. Every customer that signs up to our company is sent a copy of the terms and conditions. On both first page and back page of the handbook the administration charge is mentioned.
I understand that you feel very strongly about this issue but do you actually know how much a month bad debts cost companies, for example I know we have 1.8 million outstanding from the prior months bill cycle that have been unallocated, of which around 1.3m will be covered before the issue is referred to a debt agency. When a debt is sold on to the agency in some instances the company may for example get 60% of the actual amount oustanding. i.e. if you owe 100, the company only gets £60.00 a lose of £40.00. Lost revenue = less revenue, less revenue = less money both on new investments and profits. |
Re: Courtesy call from NTL - £10 fine if your late paying your bill !
the point i was trying to make was if you feel that it is illegal / unlawful (as you can tell i am not a lawyer so please forgive my errors) why not do something about it? has anyone here succesfully taken ntl to court regarding the £10 late payment fee?
i havent heard anything about it. with regards to losing customers you can state the number of customers lost per day, week, month or year as its irrelevant. If ntl were losing money on the late payment fee it would stop pretty quick. when a customer leaves generally they are pretty honest about the reason when they are speaking to retentions, especially if its about the late payment fee as im sure most of them would rather have it credited back than go to the effort of getting a new supplier. therefore ntl are fully aware of why customers are leaving. you also say about ntl:TW staff being more flexible? a late payment, is a late payment. it doesnt matter if its a day late or a year late. A business operates on cash flow. if all of your customers pay all thier bills a week late, very soon it will add up and could cause the business serious trouble. so this needs to be discouraged, sending out a letter threatening disconnection isnt really going to make many people that worried, whereas a penalty is. also why should customers who pay regularly and on time have to pay for customers who are regularly late in paying thier bill, i think everyone will agree there is a cost to a company when someone pays late (whether or not its £10 is up to you) if there is no penalty then ulimately that cost will be spread amongst all paying customers. |

Re: Courtesy call from NTL - £10 fine if your late paying your bill !
I just came to say I had a automated phone call today and it now clearly says "the £10 fine is for anyone not paying the bill within 30 days" so as this changed since two months ago, because I paid the day after my bill was due (but with paying PP had to wait 3 days for it to clear in the system) and got the fine plus that reconnection fee ?
I do think anyone who makes payment 30 days late is either having major problems or is intending to run and a fine probably wouldnt do either these good, I mean 30 days you can't really blame that on an over sight. But that doesnt help me out where I stand when I got fined for being a max of 4 days late, also how much does it cost ntl to reconnect you ? cause during that time I had my calls put to incoming only and my tv still had all the terrestrial channels. So what reconnecting do they really have to do. Quote:

however, im sure everyone agrees, or at least no-one has said so yet, that people that regularly pay late or often pay irregular amounts is detrimental to a business, and if these costs arn't passed on to the people that are responsible for them would mean a general price increase to cover these costs. the problem is that how does an automated system tell who is a regular late payer or a one off due to an oversight? Ill tell you know the system's ntl currently use cant and never will be able to do this. as i have said in previous posts on this topic, CS will sometimes credit back late payment fees, but what is the point of having a system like this when everytime someone gets one it gets credited back onto the next bill? i cant comment on any of other posters situation as i havent seen their accounts, they may be worthy of a credit back. but if ntl have a policy whereby if its the first time etc it is credited back again it makes the system pointless. IMO that is what commen sense is for. before anyone starts having a go, its not making the "fine" personal, its about seeing the overall picture, and using your own judgement. if people dont agree with this then maybe the way to go is for ntl to have a policy where if its late, its late and you get a late payment fee and under no circumstances is it credited back??? |
Re: Courtesy call from NTL - £10 fine if your late paying your bill !
I have read this thread with interest and a single point stands out above all others.
If you are late with a payment, the services are suspended, (this has never happened to me as I have always paid DD so been on time). The services are paid in advance are they not? the only part of the bill in arrears is for telephone calls, so how can they legally turn off television and internet when those two services are not in arrears. I also don't see how they can charge you £20 to reconnect something that has already been paid for. I agree that you should know that there is a late charge as you should have read your contract. I also agree that there should be a charge for late payment, late payment of bills has brought many a company to it's knees. A poster earlier said he couldn't help being late as it was hard to survive on £57 per week so couldn't set up a DD. My advice would be, you should be using freeview as you can't afford a cable service, be sensible and stop living outside your means. I think the word 'illegal' is wrong here, the word should be 'immoral' or 'unfair'. I don't think it is 'illegal' to levy whatever you want, but that can be challenged as unfair as bank charges have shown to be. |
Re: Courtesy call from NTL - £10 fine if your late paying your bill !
it is billed in advance, but by the time the payment is late you have already used the services, if i can give an example, the bill is produced on the 1st of august, the billing period for the 4th of agust to the 3rd of the september.
You then have 30 days to pay it before its considered late which takes it up to the 3rd (ish) of september. with regards to a reconnection fee, you shouldnt be disconnected if you are 30 days late, im not entirely sure what the actual figure is but i think its about 45 days after bill being produced. Although this can vary especially if your a credit limit customer, which means 2 bills would have been printed normally taking you over the credit limit. |

Ok gang!
The final chapter in my quest not to be treated like an idiot by NTL! After many phone calls trying to get this late payment charge broken down/justified i eventually wrote, threating legal action if my £10 wasn't refunded or the amount justified, to NTL Complaints Concord House Concord Business Park Wythenshawe Manchester M22 0BA I recieved a call yesterday from a nice lady claiming to be a complaints manager and who (supprise, supprise!) couldn't give me a breakdown of the charge either, but as a goodwill gesture she credited my account with £48 (the amount my bill was up to at that time) So! even though NTL didn't admit that they were in the wrong, they didn't defend that they were right either! So know your rights, stand up to the bullies and don't let the buggers get you down! If anyone would like a copy of my letter as a template to claim their money back PM me and i'll send it across,And it's only the cost of a stamp people to post your letter off to get your cash back! |

Concord House Concord Business Park Wythenshawe Manchester M22 0BA http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=e...106516&iwloc=A its a shame they didnt take offices in civic centre rather than sharston, then they could have setup a wimax wireless network on the roof of the near empty multi story office block above the black cab taxi rank, wavell rd/rowlandsway. |
