I can't see Man U improving on last season, our rivals have strengthened their squads, and ours appears to be weakened. I realise there are players coming back from long term absences, but at the moment, I forsee a less than impressive season ahead. :erm:

At least they get to visit our new state-of-the-art stadium! I went there on the Weekend. Nice, massive, excellent new stadium :D

I'm not convinced about this signing to be honest, he seems a bit over priced to me, but let's see how it goes.

No I don't. I really do think Carrick is worth that. Great engine, gets stuck in and passes the ball extremely well.

Just don't want a player I like to sign for a team I can't stand.

Well, I'd love to comment on who is and isn't good enough to play in your current team, but I can't seem to find too much information on the lower leagues.

Damien 31-07-2006 00:45

Re: Football Talk 2006/2007 Season

15 - 17 million? Chel$ea could outbuy that, They properly go around refering to each other by their transfer price.

Seriously though, United spent a lot of money but they did better before then. I.E They did not buy their success. Arsenal spend so little on players so we did not buy success.

Chel$ea really did buy their way to the title. What good can this be doing to the game. Money was in it before of course, but this really is a direct link between money spent and points gained

I think even the retailers play along with the banter and wind up.

My mate went out in a shop in South Wales today to buy the new Arsenal shirt and after 10 mins of searching had to eat humble pie and ask the shop assistant where they were.

The shop assistant marched him over to the correct hanger and said there you go the Arsenal shirts are at the back behind the Chelsea shirts.

The stadium is actually so close to the new stadium. When you get out of Arsenal tube, its about the same distance in the oppersite direction to highbury. Theres a big green building, which threw me at first until I saw it was just the front, if you go up the big stairs over the bridge you arrive at the massive stadium :Yikes::tu:

Not really. We offered more than Newcastle did, so did Spurs, but Chelsea, as usual won't sell to an immediate rival (something that Newcastle aren't).

They would have sold him to you, he chose Newcastle, I think that is one of the reasons why Chelsea intimidate clubs because they will sell to rivals, their constructive arrogance sets them a part from most clubs, it reminds me of the Liverpool sides 20- 30 years ago.

Nah it has been well reported that Chelsea refused to listen to Liverpool's and Tottenham's bids for Duff. Spurs offered 7m, more than we did, but Chelsea see them as a direct rival.

I don't doubt what you are saying, I just remember Duff himself saying he 'turned down' several clubs to go to Newcastle, admittedly he didn't say who they were, could have been Sheff Utd and Watford for all we know ;)

The new owner Randy Lerner

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Randy_Lerner

Fantastic news, ain't it? This is just what the club needed. None of the other groups interested in buying the club seemed serious... Michael Neville's offer might have been OK, but I always doubted whether he'd have any cash to splash for buying more players after forking out on the club. He seemed to be wanting to own the club because he is a Villa fan, but that it wouldn't really be in the club's or the fans' best interests.

Anyway, hopefully the shareholders will all agree Lerner is the best way to go on this one, and he'll be in charge shortly.

Villa have the potential to be a real big player in the Premiership. They've got a large fan base in an area where there's not any other comparably-sized teams (Leicester & Coventry are good but still not as good as Villa ;) ), with a decent ground... admittedly not as good as Arsenal's new place, or even Old Trafford, but it's still not a bad ground :) The one thing they always lacked under Ellis was the cash to build a decent squad. Hopefully now with Lerner running the ship and with O'Neill at the helm, things will improve... although they couldn't really have gotten any worse than the past few seasons.

He had a good World Cup, but then again the England team didn't.

The bit that sticks in my mind is, and it is stated on that previous link I gave...........

Quote:

His inclusion in former England coach Sven-Goran Eriksson's sqaud for the World Cup raised eyebrows after he had failed to establish himself since his international debut against Holland in August 2001.
But everyone deserves a chance I suppose :)

I am refusing to jump on the band wagon as yet, I have not seen the papers yet but I can imagine them, full of it about 'new dawns' ect. well I don't buy it, if Mclaren is so good why didn't he exert more authority in the World Cup debacle, btw Hargreaves was voted man of the match and wasn't he given a lovely reception by his perspective new employers fans.

Very Sven like 2nd half.

I reckon if England play better it will be more down to El Tel than McClaren

greece were very poor and they made us look better than we are.. have to feel for Defoe he had a great season and missed out on the WC to someone who never got a game and then for SMs new team he was only on the bench too until Ashton got injured

we didn't play too well and second half was terrible just like Sven he didn't know how to turn it around.. didn't think SG had a great game on right

still alot of work to do for England team but at least now they have said they can't win anything

Looks like it may be a swift return to league football for Oxford United if they can keep their form going.

Burton Albion 1 Oxford United 2
