Mobile phone text message???

Elllloooo....

I got a text message on my phone today.
"URGENT! Your mobile no was awarded with £1,500 bonus caller prize on 06/06/03.
This is our FINAL attempt to contact YOU!
Call 0906636 7453 BOX9xxxxxxxxxx, 150PPM"

First time I had had that one.

If I dialed the number, I suppose I would be subjected to a very long and expensive recorded message, only to be told that I had not actually won but entered in a draw & if I am lucky I can ring again, pay lots more only to find I had won a BIC Biro.

peterska2 28-06-2003 22:40

i get these all the time zoombini

they are mainly hoaxes and scams so just ignore it and leave it alone.

that way you dont lose a load of money chasing dreams.

poolking 28-06-2003 23:18

Just one big scam, soon you'll receive another one telling you to get in touch as they've already contacted you.

Just erase and forget it.

Jules 29-06-2003 00:17

Ignore it they charge £1.50 a min when you ring that number

Roy MM 29-06-2003 00:24

Treat it like a spam email if you don't reconise the addy/number delete it. :(

zoombini 30-06-2003 11:42

I wont be ringing it anyway, I only got 30p left on the phone...lol.

My son (12) kept on at me about a scratch card he found in the sunday paper, he scratched it and "won" a "prize". I use the terms won and prize in their loosest sence!

I explained that it will involve a 5 min call at £1.50 per min and that it would come out of HIS pocket money if he wants to do it, to which he agreed.

I made the phone call for hum, he won a £50 voucher..... which can only be used at a photographers in London as part payment of a £375 portfolio shoot.

So, yes he did "win" a "prize" which was valued above the cost of the call (just)

bo-peep 30-06-2003 13:32

i had one of those the other day and knowing about the scams i deleted it.got the same one again a couple of hours later.where do they get the numbers from does anybody know?

bo-peep 30-06-2003 18:38

and my latest one is

'urgent call blah blah blah from your landline.your complimentary 4* tenerife holiday or £10,000 cash await collection .blah blah blah'

timewarrior2001 30-06-2003 18:53

Can you register Mobile numbers with the telephone preference service?

bo-peep 30-06-2003 18:56

no idea.the messages must come via the mobile companies themselves cos only a few close friends have my number

If it sounds too good to be true...........:D

I think they use something similar to a "WarDialer" i.e. they mass send to 07812 000000 000001 000002 etc...

Example - if you use a modem and hyperterminal to dial 07973 100 600 you get to the Orange Direct SMS server. Send SMS messages to any orange mobile or pager and it doesn't send your phone number :D surely other phone companies use similar access... not to mention web based SMS services etc

bo-peep 01-07-2003 15:20

wot's a hyperterminal? don't think i have one of those.i'm on 02

bo-peep 01-07-2003 21:01

never thought of that.i've been using 02 for ages and recently breathe.gets too expensive if u buy them.i pay £9.99 for 200 and use them on here as well.they soon go

You need Windows and a Modem to run it.

Go to Start/Programs/Accessories/Communications to run the program "Hyper Terminal".

It's a text based interface to remote computer systems (similar to telnet but it doesn't work over the Internet, just on direct dial in connections).

bo-peep 01-07-2003 23:21

don't need one then

Stuart 02-07-2003 01:02

Fair enough...

Martin 03-07-2003 01:56

I had one of those 'you have won £ÃÆ ’‚£Ãà¢Ã¢â€šÂ¬Ã…¡Ãƒâ€šÃ‚£Ãƒââ‚ ¬Å¡Ãƒâ€šÃ‚£Ãƒâ€š £ÂÃâ €šÃ‚£Ãƒâ€šÃ‚à ƒâ€šÃ‚£ÃƒÆ’‚ £' messages, at three o'clock in the morning!
Now if your 'phone goes off at that time it's usually bad news, yes?
So yours truly jumped out of bed grabbed the 'phone and read the text....
'Phone, meet wall....hope you have a happy time.

Thats a good one:D
One of my (now) wifes flatmates persuaded her that the person she had to speak to in New York (to order something from the USA) was named Ronald McDonald( :D ), he was very persuasive. She fell for it, rang NY and asked for a Mr McDonald, first name Ronald.
....We almost died laughing:D
