What ever happened to them ? I know about the kiddie saftey side etc etc, but I used to have soooooooooooooooo much fun chatting an' 'aving a laugh and a joke with peeps from al over the place, ;) do they still exist in any 'decent' form, ?????????

Oh yeah is that the ship thingy, i was a bit confused with it all, cos you have to build yourself up the ranks and stuff. Too complicated for my liking:D Gimme a good old fashioned forum anyday:D

Thats what I'm on about, ok, I understand the need for child saftey but .................. i used to enjoy chatrooms, it was the annominity, made some good 'friends' and had some wicked laughs :D

At the end of the day, I put a LOT of the blame on irrisponsible parenatal control, I should know, my partner's one of them :(

Just fire up yahoo messenger and get to them that way, or download a chat client.

Yahoo UK now uses Lycos for chat (ships 'n all). Download Yahoo messenger from Yahoo.com and you get all the US chatrooms.... full of weirdos, loonies, porn bots and Americans. :dozey:

Seriously though, we used to have 20 + peeps in a room and have a right time, music playing / virtual partee, and no hint of any 'hitting' on anyone.

Same here, have met loads of people in the past, haven't touched it for a few years though.

I've met lots of nice people, and one or two very unhinged people too. :erm: :D

I used to use one a good few years ago called firetalk, it was taken over and renamed paltalk there are some good chat rooms on there, lots of virtual dj's and tech rooms + social issues lots of fun. There's too many americans on it though. You can use voice and cam or just txt. Recommended if you need technical help real fast.

TBO I prefered it when it was firetalk, paltalk is supported by ads and some spyware checkers dont like it.

I always preferred IRC. No moron playing music, no kids thinking they were hard and wanting to argue and fight.
I had a go at the lycos ship thing and that irritated me....

I wonder if there are any active IRC servers still about..

Yup there are loads about, see here for a few.

I use irc.p2pchat.net have done for 5 yrs now I think, it's a small server with about 150 channels and no more than 300 ppl in the main ones.

You can get on them using java through the p2p website but most of us use a chat script that way we can keep all the settings the same and personalise it.

I had a bit of hand in writing some of aGmIRCc chat script so that it the one is use :D

Been doing the job of mod in a main channel for yrs now and it's becomin less and less common to get hackers / groomers and general 100% odd uns, in fact the channel I mod on #x is a lot like here, most of us know each other, we all help each other if we can and we have a gallery ... Imma on the last page btw Fingers is me, long story lol :D

I rember chat rooms, many years ago where one could go and enjoy themsleves... unfortunatly, I think you need to be a real chat addict to get any joy out of them nowadays..

I used to be into them a good few years ago on Yahoo where there were different rooms, eg. specialist music chat rooms and DJ's spinning music but the novelty has gone now and I can't be bothered to use them now.
I think forums are much more interesting.

Oh the days of the chat room and the memories it brings back :) I met Mr Jules in a american chat room and 6 years later we are still going strong :D

If any one is interested there is a place called Talkcity that has loads of rooms that are always busy

I used to be a moderator on chat.lycos.co.uk and I advise anyone who even THINKS about letting their kids on their to not bother, the moderators used to have to pass a police check, and pass a exam on technical and moral questions marked by three higher moderators.

Since I left in 2004 the standard of moderating has gone down pan since the liquidation of the old chatteam, moderators are added in a mentor scheme which means moderators add their friends, who then spend more time in private moderator channels then keeping out perverts and stopping fights.

The whole system takes a while to get used to, but it is about as reliable as a Ford Escort 1.3L from 1970.
