[Merged] Promote your own website

Hi all,

Thought I'd start this one off here coz I saw some realy cool users sites last time round ;)

Mine's at http://www.stusplace.co.uk

NOTE: Only users OWN sites should be posted here, let's remember it's not an open invite to spam!

Russ 22-06-2003 13:38

www.russelldavid.moonfruit.com which is quite pants but I've paid for it now so I might as well use it :erm:

www.elimpentecostal.co.uk is the site for my church which I'm currently redesigning :)

Stuart W 22-06-2003 13:42

So, Russ, Are you going to update the Links page on your site?

NTHW points to .com

Russ 22-06-2003 13:47

Good idea :)

Paul K 22-06-2003 13:53

Looks like I'm gonna have to re-work my links page too.. when I get time.
http://homepage.ntlworld.com/irene.keeler/index.htm

No laughing ;) it (obviously) didnt take long to do and I haven't had time to do much work on it since. (OK so I'm lazy!)

Having just visited your sites, may I throw in a question for discussion.

Should you open a site to the public when it is at a very early stage?

Pro: All publicity is good publicity.

Con: It irritates people; they see a link, go there and there's nothing to see.

Stuart W 23-06-2003 12:28

I'm undecided on this one....

I 'launched' my site pretty much as soon as Apachie (webserver software) was installed... but I keep a blog on the front page informing people of the goings on.

As I have a forum there, it gives users more of a sence of community.... that's probably the wrong word to use under current circumstances, but you get my drift ;)

People have joined the forum and got to see different aspects of stusplace come and go. They also get to sudgest stuff for the site.

All in all, I think it's ok to promote an un-finished site, but not to leave it that way!
Too many peoples sites say stuff like "I'm updating this site" or "I'll be adding more soon" but nothing changes for weeks on end.

MikeyB 23-06-2003 13:55

Links to my two main websites are in my sig :-)

There are other sites I'm involved with, but they are just too strange/weired/scary/shamefull to even think about linking to!

Oh good grief!

Please can you tell me just what is the problem with the "nature" of my site?

There is a clear warning to anyone who follows the link, it's registered with Surf Watch, Net Nanny, Cyber Sitter et al so any responsible parent knows that their children won't be able to access it and there is no explicit sexual content.

Oh, and it's already been discussed on here in the "what do people do" thread without, seemingly, any problems or objections from anyone, so please tell me, what is the problem?

Just how many pop-up adds are needed???

It's an unwritten law that you never boast about your own web site, the punishment for breaking said law is to have your site picked apart (no matter how fantastic (or in this case, crap) looking it is)

edit: spotted this on his "site" too

Is it your first attempt?

poolking 24-08-2003 22:24

Rara Avis 24-08-2003 22:36

*To WNA. It's a great start. Most of the guys on here work in I.T or related fields. Many of the others spend all day on the net and are all knowing, or like to think so. ;)
Don't worry too much about people being hard, just learn from any constructive comments and ignore the others.
From what I've seen on here, most of the members are here to help each other. Take it on the chin. I mean, my site's tosh and I'm NEVER going to come on here saying 'come look at mine, it's fantastic'. In fact , I'm not telling anyone where it is ;) That's asking for it. But I'm learning and picking titbits up as I go along.
Do the same, mate. You'll be fine.

Just a thought, you may have copyright, which you do by creating the site etc and don't need to register it to have legal rights, but the trademark is a different issue completely. I'd get it sorted.

MadGamer 24-08-2003 23:13

As for the forum, i SIGNED UP to a website that provided it for free there is nothing i can do about the banner ads, ok the forum comes ready made like that there is nothing i can do. i mean if i had the money i would pay to get rid of them but i don't for the moment.

MadGamer 24-08-2003 23:16

Yes it was my first attempt Mal

Stuart W 24-08-2003 23:23

OK, the forums arn;t your fault in terms of pop-ups and overall design, but YOU are the one thatsigned up for such crud!

I'm not being nasty on a personal basis, but you did post it here knowing we would go take a look... you realy shouldn't have biged it up!

You should have gone for something like.....

I have set up my first website. The forum area is hosted by another company and uses pop-up adverts, does anyone know of a better free one?

now, take a look at some of the other sites on this thread and click on peoples "WWW" links to get an idea of the kind of standards you are being compared with before saying "mines pretty good".

grum1978 24-08-2003 23:26

ok...Chill out please people :Peaceman:

i don't think it all that fair to say that anyones website is 'crap' or not very good. People should recognise that making a website is an achievement in itself and if you can give someone productive advice all the better.

Lets not forget life is one big learning curve ;)

I am currently 'building' my first website so i will be looking for any useful tips when i post the link :)

I doubt that constant criticisim does much good for any one's learning curve. It just makes them defensive.
Now if you had said that it was a good start for someone his/her age but then went on to offer suggestions it might have been a way to educate him/her and encourage them on to better things.

I have to say I've got rather tired of the jump on anyone attitude that is becoming prevelent at this site. How about giving folk the benefit of doubt EVERYONE,not just Stuart.

WNS-It was a good start at your first attempt. However if you ask nicely around the board I'm sure some kind person will give you some advice and help IF you want to improve it or do do an even better site.I can't help you I'm afraid as I just use Namo webeditor myself.:)

Bit of advice....

When you post the link here DON'T say "It's pretty good" just stick with it's my first attempt, what do you tjink?

Or, what kind of improvements could I make? etc.

Thats exactly what i would do as i know that a lot of people on this website do this kind of thing for a living or are very good at it.

I think i will need all the help i can get when you all get to see it :)

Yeah, well put really. I dont want to get onto anybodys side (especially as i'm creating me first website too!!) but, i thought that WNA your approach was well... how do you put it... a little forthright.

Hey we all had/have to start from somewhere, but just thing about your approach. You'll receive a welcome response if you approach the people nicely on here :D

Personally I wouldn't bother.I'm doing my website for me not anyone else.I hope people will like it because of the subject and will overlook any deficiencies of web design because I'm not really interested in web design or coding. It's the subject that matters to me.

Alan :)

Stuart W 25-08-2003 00:59

I have nowt to appologise for.

Right, positive tips....

Consider dropping the script for the text to scroll round the mouse. It uses more bandwidth than the rest of the whole page.

Spruce up the front page with some pics and a background colour.

Have a look on Google for other 'free' forums with either no popups or limited to one popup per session.

Have a good look at other peoples personal homepages and get some design ideas that way. If you see something you like, take a look at the HTML source to see how it's done, then incorporate it into your own site. A bit like you would have for the script ;)

HTH

MadGamer 25-08-2003 11:47

Does anyone know of a site where i can:
1. Sign up for a FREE forum
2. with no pop ups

if anyones got any suggestions let me know

Russ 25-08-2003 11:54

it's unlikely you'll find one like that because the hosts have to make their money by either subscription or advertising.

You could try www.ezboard.com which is free for 30 days, after which you just get banner ads and the occasional pop-up.

MadGamer 25-08-2003 12:09

I found a forum company but they're not accepting registration at the moment.

Whats the address of Invision?

http://www.invisionboard.com/

I use this board on my site... you will need hosting for it!

It will need PHP + MySQL.

I host my forum on my Linux box via my Cable Modem.... I purchased the domain stusplace.co.uk and just point it to my IP addy.

I don't think you will find something "free" that will host this board and it's MySQL database TBH.
You are probably better off looking for a site which lets you use their boards and suffer a banner add. At least banner adds don't open a shed load of browsers.

[Edit] IPB will host your board for you, at a cost...

Price (per/mo) $10.00
Setup Fee * $10.00
Data Storage & Usage
Bandwidth 10 GB
File Storage 50 MB

They are the "Basic" prices, more money gets you more bandwidth / storage.

Having said that, $10 per month is pretty expensive for what you are getting.

Thanks for that but i want one that will host for FREE like proboards.com
