PC World/Apple Keyboard

Is it just me or am I so unlucky that I always end up with the village idiot every time I'm forced to shop in PC world? I asked one of the staff today if the Apple USB keyboard worked under Windows XP, I was 99% sure but I wanted to check before I bought it, he looked on the box, saw that the system requirements were a Mac running OSX and instantly said "No", he then proceeded to argue with me that they definately don't work and said he'd check with his (scoff) "Senior technical staff", who also obviously just looked at the box and said no, a few more minutes crapping on about me not being able to bring it back if it doesn't work I just picked it up, paid for it, brought it home, plugged it in and lo and behold it works like a charm, even the volume buttons and Apple key (which turns into the Windows Key).

So, fantastic keyboard, nice and weighty and takes up very little desk space, well recommended.

And they have a nifty USB hub built in so you can plug in a mouse, or any other unpowered devices.

You'd think they could have just plugged one onto a pc while there and find out....

Shows why I don't (voluntarily) use PC world. While I don't expect them to know the answer to any question a customer may ask (no one could), I do expect them to know how to find it out.

It's also worth noting that I know a lady that was in charge of tech support at one of their larger stores in the south east (can't say which one), and by her own admission she knows absolutely naff all about computers.

*sighs* Spent many an hour making PC World staff in Peterborough look like idiots. Even got "requested" to leave the store after losing a salesman a sale on over £1000 worth of PC when the pensionner couple only needed a £300 unit ;)
Too many inexperienced or technically inept staff members wandering around trying to sound as if they know what they are doing. I used to have a laugh with one of their tech guys though, he knew his stuff and got just as annoyed as me with a lot of their staff

The hub is kinda weird, my G7 mouse needs to charge the batteries and does it via USB and it actually works in the keyboard hub but my card reader, which by my reckoning would use less power, tells me that there's not enough power to enable it.

there isn't a print screen key on an apple keyboard, because on a mac you use Grab to take screenshots.

You need to remap the F13-15 buttons to Print Screen, Scroll Lock and Break.

To do this, create a text file containing the following:

Quote:

REGEDIT4

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\Keyboard Layout]

"Scancode Map"=hex:00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,04,00,00,00,46,E0 ,5F,00,46,00,5E,00,37,E0,5D,00,00,00,00,00
the save the file as remap.reg

Backup your registry, then open the file to add the new registry entries.

Should be sorted :)

edit: For some reason it looks like in the post there is a space in the word "control" but there isn't.

Just out of interest (because I switch between Macs and PCs all day long) are you not bothered that the key layout is different to a standard PC keyboard?

There are very few differences, apart from the page up/page down/end/home keys etc and the "/@ being the American way round, other than that it's fine.

The only thing that annoys me about the keyboard on my mac laptop is that there is no hash key! grr!

It's the " and @ that bug me in particular.

Just tried the above code entry into the registry thing and had no effect at all.

Tsk, PCW store staff... Don't get me started. The techs in the clinic are sound but there are a fair few muppets amongst the salesmen as well as some OK ones.

Exactly. One of my main griped!. Not nice, if you spend a lot of your time writing LISP code :erm:

(btw, it doesn't have an 'end' key either)

########

I have on one my mac keyboard and I do not have Applekeys running, I use the backslash key right next to the enter key.

Just wish I could use print screen, without the need for Apple Keys.

Yes... perticularly if you use a pc keyboard with the mac..

I managed to download a keymap config to my mac mini "windows - british" that swaps those 2 around (can't remember where i got it from now) however certian apps seem to insist on changing it back to English - UK even though i set the "windows - britsh to the deafult" :Yikes:
