Pc Xbox Or Ps2
I am thinking about buying a ps2, or xbox. To move away from playing games on my pc. Eventually getting rid of pc and just keeping the wifes laptop. I am currently playing COD 1 and 2, Rome total war, Full spectrum warrior. What would be the best option.

Get a gaming laptop :)

Re: Pc Xbox Or Ps2
I'd say go XBOX, and if you miss having a PC, you can mod it and chuck Linux on it :P
Of course, that's only a quick note. |
Re: Pc Xbox Or Ps2
Have you played much on a console, compared to a PC? Gameplay controls, let alone the different quality of graphics (can be good, but not necessarily), often provides a competely different experience
If you go for a console, will you be tying up the household TV to play, when a separate computer leaves the TV free. Similarly as you probably need a PC for email, internet and all sorts of other stuff why spend on a dedicated console when your PC can do that job just as well. Bottom line I suspect it comes down to gametype, but certainly the OCD genre runs well on PC but was only emulated on the consoles. |
Re: Pc Xbox Or Ps2
plus the cost of console games is outrageous! No way would I pay £50 for one game!!! I begrudge paying £35 for my PC games!!! But then I reason with myself and tell myself that I will save more in the long run as I won't need to go out everynight, thus saving money I will just flush down the loo! ;)

Re: Pc Xbox Or Ps2
Having played across all of your choices and a few more, I would say that it was down to 1, pc, end of, yes, the controls can be a bit overwelming on some games but when you get the basic move configs off to a tee then there's no beating a pc IMHO, I have an xbox that has only ever played one game :( splinter cell, enjoyed it but then got into CoD, Moh etc etc tomb raider........I could go on, at the end of the day, its down to personal choice :tu:

Re: Pc Xbox Or Ps2
I would say an xbox360. Cloest thing to decent PC gaming in terms of the graphics and online gaming. Best console I have ever played.

Re: Pc Xbox Or Ps2
thanks all, think i will stay with pc until it no longer plays the games i want. next time i need to upgrade graphics card might consider it then.
In answer to some of the questions, 1 Do not want to use the laptop for gaming, 2 Last time i used console was crash banidicoot on playstation 3 Generallt only get to use pc when baby asleep, so could use on main tv, or on a portable 4 In last month only used PC for Cable forums, so i can do this from laptop. 5 Not sure about costs of games, never looked into it. Last pc games bought were off ebay from far east. I assumed console games can be bought in same way. 6 Xbox 360 still overpriced, maybee when i am ready they will be more reasonable. Thanks for your help. |
Re: Pc Xbox Or Ps2
Start saving and buy a PS3 450 quid

No discussions needed on which console now i guess. So no flame wars. There is evidence to prove what i have said. |
Re: Pc Xbox Or Ps2
After seeing a 360 in action, I really don't think it's overpriced. I think MS are spot-on with their pricing strategy for the 360. The pricing of the PS3, on the other hand, well all I can say is that MS must have been laughing very hard when Sony announced how much it'll set you back to own a PS3.

Yes PS2 might still be out sellling 360 but its only £99, 360 is £280. So lets see when the PS3 arrives costing a lot more than the price of a 360 and the fact that the 360 will already have been onsale for a year, who the winner will be. You mean the PS3 graphics and not the actual games as many of them are just sequals to games that have been around since the PS1. |

PS3s won't be overpriced either, it's going to cost a helluva lot to make one, it will take a very long time for them to reach £100! |

Using a console - slap the disc in and off you go... None of this having to get more memory, better graphics card, more HD space, DirectX x.x etc. I had a PS, so got a PS2 when it came out (for backwards compatibility) and now have a second PS2 - both units are on my home WLAN for multiplayer/LAN play. I'd go for Sony - maybe wait a few months and get the PS3... |

Finally as for not looking at the PS3 I have followed every console from their announcements and know most of the technical details and the PS3 isn't actually that much better than the 360. I have read articles from programmers detailing the pros and cons for each machine. As for Blueray I will be backing HD-DVD as most of the formats Sony has come up with have failed. eg Betamax, minidisc and UMD. Considering DVD was meant to enable larger games it took a while for that to actaully happen and even now there are games that fail to fill the full DVD. |
Re: Pc Xbox Or Ps2
I would hardly call UMD a failed format...

Re: Pc Xbox Or Ps2
I'm with Darth Yoda on this one - Sony are placing too much emphasis on Blueray, and I'm not convinced it's enough to justify the significantly higher price.
Admitedly, the price of a new standalone Blueray drive today would set you back the best part of the price of a PS3, if not more. So, if you're an early adopter then maybe it would make sense. However, the AV snobs I work with whom I've spoken to have all said that they'd rather stick pins in their eyes than watch a film played through a console. Personally, I can't see the difference between watching films through a PS2 or an XBox and watching it on a standalone DVD player, but they assure me it's just cause I don't know what to look for. I was going to say that maybe the Cell would make the PS3 worthy of its price tag, but then I remembered this article, so I think I'll keep quiet. ;) |
Re: Pc Xbox Or Ps2
In the early days of the X-box I thought one of it's selling points would be it's ability to double up as a DVD player. That's a few years ago now, when DVD players were only just becoming popular. Very quickly did I realise it wasn't that suitable. Not due to playback quality, more through background noise (altough at least one DVD i bought didn't play properly). Didn't take me long to get a dedicated DVD player.
I'd expect the same would happen over blueray, if it is a format that becomes popular the dedicated players will soon come along at a cost effective price that will superceed the PS3 option, except maybe for the kids bedroom. |
