I'd like it to be true, so I'll keep my fingers crossed (but won't hold my breath) because I'd most likely downgrade to 4Mb if that were the case.

I can confirm that this is true. Just checked the intranet :)

I think this is to get the speeds a bit more in line with the Telewest offerings.

They've probably realised their "10Mb for all" plan was really, really stupid.

Loads would have downgraded, and their revenue would have gone through the floor.

Obviously I would have welcomed it, but they'd be stupid to do it. Unless they could upgrade the current 10Mb to 50Mb, of course.

I suggest everyone checks the aup every Friday and Monday ?

And 1 last observation.

for the last 2 months they have not been able to supply 2 meg to me so how will they do 4 meg or will they cover there overcrowded ubr in my area with the UPTO kopout.

In the links you posted with this NTL mention upgrading everyone to 10 MB "by the end of 2006", I could see no reference to the summer. June 1st is not the end of 2006. It is still quite possible that this is another step in the process and we all may have 10 MB by the end of 2006 (or probably a little later due to normal NTL delays and the merger) - let's hope shall we?

Neil 25-04-2006 15:48

Re: New Speeds - June 1st

We've got a document from ntl with the news re this announcement, it will be going up on our news page ASAP.

[Edit]-From what I can see 2Mb customers are being upgraded to 4Mb (unlimited usage), & 4Mb customers are being upgraded to 10Mb also with unlimited usage.

It also says the following:

Quote:

o That’s twice the speed for the same monthly price!
o We’re also increasing the upload speed from 200K up to 400K
o New customers will automatically receive up to 4Mb download speeds
 ntl 10Mb customers can now surf and download as much as they like with total peace of mind
o 1Mb, 4Mb and 10Mb all offer unlimited access. Our Broadband services are subject to a User Policy, which includes fair usage. To review this, go to www.ntlworld.com/userpolicy
 Customers do not have to do anything- automatic upgrades during June
o The customer’s bill may not be updated at the same time as their change in service. For example, 4Mb may be displayed on the bill before the 4Mb speed increase has taken place
o All speed increases and bill descriptions will be completed by the end of June.

So they are uncapping the 4 & 10 meg services.

That just confirms to me that traffic shaping is imminent, as there is no way that ntl are suddenly going to reverse the cap they have had in place for 3 years. :nono:

Re: New Speeds - June 1st

Well I think this is a good move by NTL, I have nothing against NTL's broadband and I have had no problems with my broadband since I took their service a year ago!

One thing they should have done is upgrade their 1MB to 2MB with a 200k upload so they had a 2, 4 & 10 MB service, but we can't have it all right!

Nice to see NTL pulling their BB into line with other services offered by different ISP's!

I am currently in the process of moving over to a 2MB adsl service as I get a bt phone line and a 2MB broadband service which is unlimited and free evening and weekend calls for upto an hour for just 3p all for £24.98p a month.

Hmm the 4MB product is giving me reason to change my mind!

We shall see.

Re: New Speeds - June 1st

I really hope they are going to massively upgrade the network, already in a lot of areas speeds hit less than 50k in the evenings.

Unlimited 10 meg will mean nothing unless it can be used.

As long as the traffic shaping is only for peak hours, i don't think we can really complain too much. It should only really affect people who use P2P and newsgroups etc, and most of those download overnight anyway.

One thing though, about this new upgrade:
With the 4mb tier now having a 400k upstream, surely a lot of 10mb customers will just downgrade to it, as 4mb is still a very good speed, and the drop in upstream is minimal. Are ntl trying to push users off the higher tier, so the network can cope better?

Nah sorry that's just the way it goes, the shaping that the modem does isn't always 100% and it's certainly not impossible for the upstream cap to be broken briefly from time to time.

Well I can honestly say that if they are going to leave the 1Mb people till the last possible second for upgrades then I may well have to look at Tiscali etc for other options now that we are back on a BT line again.
NTL need to set and agree to follow a plan instead of changing their minds every other month about what they are doing. How many "announcements" have they made about the speed increases so far??

DONT EVEN BOTHER... dial up will be better instead!;)

tiscali cant do anything right, apart from connecting u...after ur connected crap speeds, and fair usage warnings for excessive use of ur 100k connection which is meant to be 2mb, and then when u leave there are billing errors and call the debt agency on u............ not a good place to even THINK about going to...

Yet with Tiscali i always got my full 1Mb... Always overcharged and they never did get off my old phone line... That was after 3months, i don't think they support migration which is saddening really.

goods news, i was a 10meg user but downgraded to 2meg due to the cap they had imposed on the 10meg teir and 2 meg was unlimited and cheaper, now with the plan to move 2meg users to 4meg and still unlimited i will be looking forward to the upgrade. To me the 3meg was the best teir they ever did and now i'll be getting 4meg and it'll be even cheaper and faster than what the 3meg teir was. BTW i must of been one of the lucky few to to be hit by degrading service as my speeds on whatever teir have always been spot on.

will be interesting to see if and when they introduce traffic shaping what the actual effect will be, we all know how traffic shaping has effected other isp's and has lead to a mass eviction of users looking for new isp's who have had sufffered slower speeds than dialup when traffic shaping was brought in on there service.

Which were replaced by far more profitable customers who didn't want to cane it or use P2P (see Plusnet's user figures for an example) and customers who used a little but had issues with previous ISPs thanks to them being uncapped and unshaped and getting their bandwidth hammered by P2P.

As ntl have stated that it will only affect upstream I'd say the only people who are liable to have issues are those who have ratios they really want to keep up. No, encrypting torrents using the current software won't help, the current versions of uTorrent, Azureus et al that offer encryption are already detectable and shapeable. No it doesn't cost ISPs any more, the software updates will be covered by the support contracts. Will ntl be sorry to see torrent monsters go? Nope.

Seems like relatively mild and not uncommon shaping to be honest, most cable ISPs shape upstream only as it's their 'weak link'.

the ISP filters traffic so that some data gets priority over other data - e.g. a voice over IP phone call is more important to reach its destination as a priority over someone at the same time downloading a unix distro or browsing home banking. following on from this downloading a uniz distro takes lower priority over browsing.

the ISP sets the priorities and can do it by the ports used or if being really smart by looking at the physical packet data going through their systems. all data transfered over the net is sent in 'packets' and via 'ports' - browsing usually uses port 80, person to person sending/sharing movies and other files usually uses other typical port numbers - so usually you can work out your priorities as an ISP by setting it up by port.

this is all sensible stuff on a reasonably funded network - ie. at peak times you need to protect against massive peaks so voip calls dont get buggered up between say 6pm and midnight. just as the power companies have to handle peak use during the break when corry is on and we all boil the kettle!

but traffic shaping is also another way to prop up an underfunded network instead of increasing capacity.

---------- Post added at 11:00 ---------- Previous post was at 10:57 ----------

and another abuse of traffic shapping is to priorise your own ISP's voip calls but voip calls from other independent providers - e.g. skype you could prioritise as the lowest priority - a covert way of putting skype and others out of business while promoting your own voip service.

well i don't use P2P and seeing Newsgroups is something you pay for they better not traffic shape them to much - for example at the moment i'm downloading at 250 kb/sec and my upload is only about 5 to 6 kb/sec which is nothing compared to the likes of emule and torrents that require full upload,

same goes for xbox Live also, downloads from them just lately have been awful to say the least, traffic shaping on something like this will kill XBL totally, just look at all the NTL problems over at xbox forums

They shouldn't be doing it for anyone for any length of time. If they can afford to offer the product at that price then that should be the price it is for everyone.

If you are paying a premium news provider what do ntl care, you aren't paying them? Even if you use ntl's servers they are free servers, just a value add rather than a core part of the product.

In any event they've already said it'll be an upstream only cap.

Also obviously if you're hammering the network downloading TB of news a month I imagine they'd want a chat even with an uncapped product. The old T+Cs about network degredation will still be present.

---------- Post added at 11:13 ---------- Previous post was at 11:07 ----------

Mmm neither of those are really accurate.

In this context traffic shaping is about your ISP using hardware that identifies your type of traffic and throttles down certain types of traffic based on a profile.

It basically means that they can control how much bandwidth P2P, news, web, etc, can use on their network rather than just being able to control how much bandwidth there is in total.

The wiki article covers traffic shaping to remove jitter, and QoS is about identifying and prioritising traffic based on source / destination rather than doing packet inspection on it. ntl can certainly do that as well, tagging traffic from business users for expedited forwarding and cable modems as best effort for example. Easily enough done.

When i rang retentions and they offered me the package i asked how long it was for and they said it was for as long as i had NTL. It does state on my bill 3months but on my account it says the re-add the discounts every 3 months. I was told this by retentions and i also phone CS and asked what was on my account this they also confirmed that the discounts would be add every 3 months.

I may be in the minority here but why dont they see a need to shape downstream? I think it may be beneficial 6pm to 12pm. If someone has poor speeds no matter what then at least getting fast speeds on http is better then nothing and allowing the gamers to enjoy their games.

that is true, but i do pay them for the internet access - its not my fault they cannot provide a decent newsgroup service. To traffic shape be it good for the all to the majority means your buying something but not actually getting it, abit like say you have the base pack tv yet its in black&white between X&Y hours. Yet becasue its something that the majority won't notice as they just use their 10meg connections for web browsing, online shopping, e-mails then NTL get away with offering you a lesser service that what you paid for.

i don't download much anyway certainly less than the 75gig 10meg cap that was supposed to be in place, i just want what i pay for so will wait and see what effect traffic shaping has on me personally before i decide to up roots and take my BB,Phone and TV subscriptions elsewhere

probably upto a full 600kbit and perhaps a whole 720kbit/s
for the 100mbit/s download.

it would be nice if one day we could have the ability to
upload at the same rate as download, just inside the whole
NTL network would be a great thing, not asking for the whole web and perhaps some webspace with PHP/rebol serverside capability would be very nice too.

It also says the following:

So they are uncapping the 4 & 10 meg services.

That just confirms to me that traffic shaping is imminent, as there is no way that ntl are suddenly going to reverse the cap they have had in place for 3 years. :nono:

it would seem that these download increases would help
NTL in respect of introducing VOD and nearVOD, presumably
the upload speeds 200kbit ?(thought it was 256kbit now)are to help prevent potential stalls in the pings etc, i do wonder though will NTL also introduce Multicasting across the whole NTL network and in doing so give the end-users the ability to
for instance multicast a webcam/etc to other NTL users inside the network (i wouldn't expect them to route multicast outside NTL), if so that might be considered inovative for a retail UK ISP.

the combined multicasting/P2P they were hinting at for Near/VOD to the NTL users would save them a lot of internal traffic it would seem.

any news on the upstream... ? hope it goes beter if ntl went 10 / 1 unlimited they are looking at thousands and thousands of very happy customers :D

i asked that 1 mbit+ upload question once, and the answer was that the NTL
network couldn't do more than 1.5/2 mbit/s or so max, so 1mbit/s upload would seem possible but unlikely, still if it did go to that 1mbit/s then that one thing could get them a lot of new users from the other companys and they could rightly so, claim it as an inovation for a UK retail ISP...

it would be nice to be able to recomend NTL internet once again to my friends and so on.

(arr i hate this appending in this messageboard software, these should be seperate, is there a way to do that ?)

you should care, if your upload speed gets swamped then it
effects your download rates massively.

keeping in mind the new PS3 for instance, it will make far greater demands on your upload rates while your video serving your webcam and doing some realtime chatting.

hmmmm

LOL Yea, i do wonder though, would that be possible between
just the NTL users and the whole ntl network ?.

one thing i think could be done with any new commissioned kit STB/CM/etc is to include a mobile/WiMax or even the new 11N chipset with Mesh networking included, then a whole new private/wireless network could be built up over time and be used as a base for a multicasting/P2P distribution for both the
users and the core NTL Near/VOD for instance.

i wish all the new HD freeview boxs did the same, now that would be a real UK inovation......

With 700k upload you could easily run your own web server.

I Already run my own webserver with 200k upload, albeit a little slow, but it does work.

www.abyssunderground.co.uk is the site if you want to see. (Its limited to 10KB/s so it doesnt saturate my upload and stop me from browsing).

Sorry to rain on everyones parade, but a little birdy gave me an insight to the future, dont know whether its true, but normally they are pretty accurate

They said everyone will have 10meg, as standard speed, what you will pay for is the amount of data you use. The kit is already installed and configured.

Re: New Speeds - June 1st

Most ADSL ISP have gone the 'upto' 8Mbit route with Varying Prices depending on Useage (as low as 1 Gig month) and Upload Speed. For NTL to bring in across the board 10mbit with diff Useage, they will need some way to monitor and act once you have gone over that Useage. You may ask why a person with say a 5 GIG month Cap for example would want 10mbit for example - of course it wont be for Downloading but Light Useage such as Web Browsing, Playing Games etc - just comes down a lot quicker.

As for Upload, the Majoity I imagine of Home Users (What this product is aimed at) would not even know what an Upload Was and the way Cable Works means the upload will always be a lot less then download (has to do with Streaming TV to your STB not running a Web Server lol).

The idea of offering Faster Speeds 'inside' NTL is something I have asked before - I got this Idea from the Chinese I think as they for example have lets say 100mbit both ways Inside there network but once it leaves china, it might as well be 56K Dial Up. Not sure if the Kit we have can be used this way (Faster inside NTL) but it would be a nice addition - much like free calls to other NTL Users.

I will forever disagree on this, 10meg or 1meg wont make the slightest bit of difference to gaming, web browsing wont be a 'lot' quicker. Light usage, high speeds dont go in tandem with each other, it is sort of like wondering whats going on with plusnet releasing a 8meg product that has a 50meg cap that could be used in 6 seconds.

They're going to drop the upload on the 10M service as well I presume.

Be a while before all of this happens so 'near future' might be optimistic ;)

Ok first off. What ?? Some full stops and commas would have been helpful there.

BB speeds from June are going to be 1MB, 4MB and 10MB all unlimited. Charges will be 1MB = £17.99, 4MB = £24.99 and 10MB £34.99.

NTL did announce plans last year to have everyone on upto 10MB with the price you pay being set by a cap. I do not now if this is still going ahead though.
