Easier way to get your key is to sign up with technet and just click vista preview.Gives you a key in seconds.The download links are busy at present though

Once i do get it though, i want to partition my hard drive, so that i can run Xp and Vista separately as i don't want it to effect anything on XP. Is this going to be simple? If so how do i go about partitioning the drive without losing anything?

I assume once its partitioned i can just install Vista via my created DVD...?

How are you intending to partition the drive and save xp? are you using partition magic? another option would be to ghost xp ,partition drive then ghost back xp before installing vista.Remember Vista takes ages to install dont cut the install once it starts until the first reboot at least otherwise it will screw your boot up up :)

Well not really sure how i was going to do it, are there any guides on the net i did a quick search but couldn't find anything specific.
Basically i just wanna do it as easily as possible without really losing any work, i mean i could just back everything up to my laptop or onto DVD, which might make things simpler, but id rather just keep it on the PC, and use a dual boot for both XP and Vista.. (If that's possible...:confused: )

Edit: Also wanted to do it for free or at least the cheapest and easiest way? (Sorry for all the questions!)

use the link in post 1 but use a download manager like reget

Do you only have 1 hard drive? and it it whole? if this is the case you will need partition magic or norton ghost and burn to dvds

I just took the download from post 1 past 100meg so if you use reget or getright it should be fine

Yeah I've only got one hard drive - a 120GB, got about 50GB free so i thought id use that, but as it looks like I'm going to have to get the software you mentioned it might just be easier (and cheaper) to get another hard drive? Could back up some work then as well..

Another point using that direct link and getright it says the download is 558MB, thats not right is it..

This is taking forever to download - should be able to try it out over the weekend if the weather's bad.

One question - if I install to an IDE drive and then put it in a USB enclosure can I boot Vista with it? Ideally I'd like to be able to plug it in when I want.

Otherwise I'lll just put it on another partition - don't you just love partition magic!

well i found it impossible to boot from the dvd (everthing loads ok then when the main vista install screen comes up it stops responding) so now im doing an upgrade on a new hard drive which seems to be going ok (so far).
Im just hoping this works as im dying to try this out.

Well my download with reget just stopped at 2gig, it told me it had failed, i'm not very happy as that had taken ages to download.

Not sure if its worth trying again or not?

EDIT: It seems that MS have turned off the resume feature for this download, as it comes up with an error reporting that download resuming inst supported by thsi file, which is why my download failed :(

I iwsh the official MS link would work so i could access thier download manager...

I want to continue using Windows XP and keep all my files, but i also want to use Windows Vista, is there a way to boot both Windows XP and Windows Vista?

Use the program Download Accelerator Plus the download will start then it will look for alternative locations for the file, i was able to download it that way, wasn't able to get it from Microsoft site.

- Add the link above to the Address bar in firefox
- File menu, save as
- Adds it to the Download queue... in Firefox's own Manager - which of course shows the UA of a browser not something like DAP, GetRight etc.

Gettin 100 kB/s on 1 Mb/s connection which is about as good as it usually gets!

As for the 64 bit one, thats blatantly the wrong size. But we have 32 and 64 bit PCs here to try it on.

The speed keeps up as well, only had it drop by 2kbps over 35mins. Lovely. @ 53% now (1716Mb @ 419kbps)

i think microsoft needid to setup a handfull of mirrors, or even used a torrent like some linux manufacturers have done lately. even there own servers cant cope with the sheer load put on them.
Really they should have learned a couple of weeks ago when msdn/technet/beta testers (via connect) brought there servers to a crawl.

Its a sweet os, and is far more functional than some people here think.
Its also quite stable (however i have killed it a few times) make sure you all have a lot of ram, 1 gig is the minimum i recomend for an install to use all the features.
Also turn off generating thumbnails for videos, i've killed explorer several times doing that! (uses more ram than i've got)

After many tries at getting it with the link on the left of the page I tried the one on the right. Got it in one go and slowest download speed was 1.13Gig. Took a time even at that speed. Just got to burn the ISO to disc then swap some files around so I can do a clean install.
You can overwrite XP with it but there is no going back apart from a clean install of XP. Going to use an empty drive for it and if seems ok will swap my existing files over to it. Handy having two internal and one external drive. Gives room for moving stuff around.

Just finished the 3.2Gb download, now when i've fixed the Video BIOS on this 9550 back ot it's original (need help on this - http://cableforum.co.uk/board/showthread.php?t=48219) I'll be all set to test on my spare 100Gb's of space.

I can't download the 32bit version. I keep getting Acess denied. However I can get the 64bit no problem, which is usless as I don't have a 64bit machine. Anyone else having the same problem?

The problem i'm having is that my downloads stop at 1.99gig, the download just ends using some download managers it says the file is 2 gig. So i'm not sure whats wrong? Any ideas? Ive tried downloading it with reget and just internet explorer both ended at the same 1.99gig.

i downloaded this last night, and my winrar says it has 3,355,598,848 bytes in the file: vista_5384.4.060518-1455_winmain_beta2_x86fre_client-LB2CFRE_EN_DVD.iso

but when I double click this file, it gives me only a text file inside that is 135 bytes.

whats going on? or can I not unzip but have to burn the image?

Mine stopped overnight at 1.5GB, with an error using their recommended download manager !!!

Oh well, they do say patience is a virtue!!

A day or too and the manic downloading will have settled and should get a good connection.....

In the meantime, recheck all backups are up to date and working.....

burn the image with dvd decrypter mate :) if you extract the iso then the end files burnt will not boot :)

MS have moved the links due to overload. I have the ISO on my FTP but download would only be at 80Kb or so.

so i downloaded, install, working happy so go to plug my 360 in to use media extender stuff and get. Blah Blah blah wrong region blah blah.

Turns out on beta 2 the extender features only work in North America!

how sucky :(

now i guess i need to try and get my 360 to think its in the states :)

Ivge managed to get the 32 bit link working again, not sure if the links changed or not? But i got it to work on my laptop, and its currently downloading using getright. Only another 6 hours to go... if it works properly!

Are you downloading it onto a disc formated "FAT"? If so, it will stop at 2GB. That is the file size limit for FAT.

True, MS have released Vista beta for free. However, as far as I know, they have NOT given anyone permission to re-distribute it, and, apart from that, that particular newgroup frequently does carry pirated software.

Are you using IE6 without SP1 or 2, or was it something elsE? I'm sure i read about d/l's being limited to 2Gb's in IE before a patch was released. Funny i can't find anything on google, so i could be imagining this :S

Vista Beta has always been free.You had to be a paying subscriber of MSDN or Technet to have had access to keys before but there has never been a charge or it

I'm actually using IE 7 on the main pc and IE 6 on the laptop both are fully updated. Ive had this problem on the main PC with IE 7 when just using that also with reget download manager, and also had this problem with getright download manager on my laptop. I cant really understand why its stopping at this amount?

It's been doing the same for me and countless other people, mine stops with Leechget at varying times, last one was around 300mb claiming the download was complete, no problems with any other downloads though.

I had wondered about the router can there be a limit on downloads for a router? or a single download?

EDIT: having quickly looked over the router settings i couldnt see anything that looked like it limited downloads?

I used wget -c to get mine and noticed it always zoomed along until about a gig had been transferred and the dropped to 80K or so. Reconnecting let it go fast again so did this 3 times and got it in just over an hour.

I don't think it's your router settings, I've downloaded more than 3.2gb as a single file using Leechget and it's worked perfectly, as I said, you're not alone there are loads of people complaining about the same thing.

Hmm now when i try to redownload it, it tells me the file size is 2048MB, before it used to tell me it was 3200MB? Seems to have gone totally wrong now then!

Yep, totally wrong there unfortunatly.

Soon, however when demand is gone you should be able to get it.
