Best NTL modem?
I still use the Terrion, I guess they now have new ones ?
Should I carry on using this modem, or ask for a new model ? I bought the Terrion when NTL started, so paying £19.99 instead of £24.99, however the pressure is on for me to pay the full amount now, I have until November  So can ask for a new modem |
Re: Best NTL modem?
If youre paying for it, ask for a new one, youre entitled to it!

I told them my Motorola was dead and they sent an engineer out to fit a new one.

Re: Best NTL modem?
I was using a Terayon modem but the ethernet port suddenly gave up (I didn't buy the modem) - I now have an ntl:250 which is loverly! :) Its blue and small.

Re: Best NTL modem?
Also the Terayon can't do the full 10mbit just like the Motorola 3100, so if possible it's best to get it changed somehow.

Re: Best NTL modem?
Get an ambit 250 from them.

Re: Best NTL modem?
So what are they sending out these days ? are they better ?
I have 2 Terrions (Long story) and they are both working, but only one of them in use (MAC address enabled) so I guess I could switch back if they sent a rubbish one out :) I almost bought a US Robotics at the time, but 3Com took over in the UK and they went very high cost. No you cant buy and use your own these days, although I think you could get a DOC sys modem enabled just buy its MAC address, after all the TS would not have a clue :) Just wonderd what bad modems were out there ---------- Post added at 22:03 ---------- Previous post was at 22:01 ---------- Quote:

Re: Best NTL modem?
Hi,
this is interesting, I (as quite a lot of others) have been suffering during this 'upgrade' period with slow or dropped connections. I have a Motorola 3100 modem bought back in the old days and am currently on 2Mb which is now being upped to 4mb i assume. Could this be a more likely cause of my problems do you think, (rather than NTL just being crap obviously)? Are the Ambit 250s Ethernet modems? cheers Neil |

I've had a 200 up to 18Mbit down but then the 300k upload restricted its' speed. If the 250 can do full speed for the DOCSIS specs it supports it should be able to deliver close to 51Mbit. |

Re: Best NTL modem?
Top speeds is one thing but what about stability!
How does the 250 rate ? My bought 3100 has been great (when my SNR is >=30) and I'm loathed to change it unless its half-duplex starts to limit it. Dave |
Re: Best NTL modem?
My 3Com CMX modem appears to have a problem with the speed increase. Since yesterday morning the connection freezes mid way through any sizeable download (2+ Mb). Anyone else got a CMX?

Re: Best NTL modem?
My question would actually be power consumption as it is left on 24/7
|
Re: Best NTL modem?
Check on the mains adaptor, should give you maximum power usage

Re: Best NTL modem?
I had a Motorola 4100 up until last week, had it since NTL first ever brought out Broadband.
It started playing up, Dropping Connection, so i Phoned up support, and get this, In less than an Hour i had a new NTL 250 installed and working. Not bad customer service if you ask me. Apparently they've experienced a few problems lately with the Motorola's and from what the engineer said they were possibly going to change them all in time. |

Re: Best NTL modem?
Hey,
I remember the old 3Com router we had at my uni house used to have a "MAC address cloning" feature. I'm looking at the Linksys WCG200. If this had a similar feature, could it be compatible with the NTL cable service? Cheers, Suman |

It may well be compatible, but includes a Cable Modem. NTL will only allow their own Cable Modems to be attached to the network, so you would be better off buying an Ethernet router (such as the WRT54GS, also by Linksys). |

Re: Best NTL modem?
Ive seen several comments about the 3100 but what about the SB 4100? Seems to be quite happy with the 4mbit here.

Re: Best NTL modem?
Well so far they extended my deadline until November, then they said I should ring back then to see if they can offer me another deal then.
Have the 4Mb upgrade and the Terion is working just fine, so I guess I will stay with it, I do have a spare should it go down. Are the set-top box modems worse than stand alone ? |

Re: Best NTL modem?
My Terayon gave up the ghost not long after I went to 10 meg, NTL gave me a brand new 250 modem (the little blue ones) which sits nicely out of the way.
