Re: changing from usb to ethernet!
The ip address is an internal ip not an external one thats why your not getting the net.
In control panel /network connections/ lan connection./properties highlight tcp/ip and click properties make sure both settings are set to automatically close that then on general tab click support and then repair you could also try disabling your firewall first Im not a guru theres loads know more about networking than me here |

so i changed it to automatic, and restarted comp with ETHERNET wires.... and the comp freezes at startup screen [user login screen]. so i shut down, removed the power to the modem, then logged back in, and then powered up the modem again!...... this time i got an ip, but there was no values for SUBNET MASK AND DEFAULT GATEWAY! so internet never worked :( can some1/zinglebarb plz help! thx! |

NO ROUTER INVOLVED! |
Re: changing from usb to ethernet!
Try uninstalling and reinstalling the enet card this sometimes clears older setting give it a go(dont do this if you dont have drivers)

Re: changing from usb to ethernet!
Right. A few simple steps.
Make sure usb lead nt plugged in. Turn off computer. Turn off Modem (remove power cable) Double check ethernet cable plugged in. Turn on cable modem. Allow it to power up and the lights to sync. Turn on computer. If the compuiter does not pick-up the net then go to my network places - view network connection. There should be a network connection showing as connected. Right click on it and select properties. Click on tcp-ip and select properties. Make sure optain ip and dns auto are selected. Ok out of all menus and should be working ;) hm |

Makes sure that all the bases are covered and would be the 1st thing I'd go through with anyone. Whenever I try diagnose a problem I always take them back to the start and walk people through it , that way I know they have gone through it the same way I would and I can expect what problems would arise by it. Half of the problems people have is when they divert off the correct path and try stuff themselves. |

ie 81.125.65.xx or xx.125.65.20. The format of the ip will let us know if your getting a valip ip. |

on my ethernet it was something like 19x or soemthing!? |
Re: changing from usb to ethernet!
81 is a proper ntl assigned address.
192 is the wrong address and means the pc is assigning it. For reference 19x address's you ca post on the forum as they are useless to anyone that does not know your actual ip address. For instance I'm on a network and my (LAN) ip is 192.168.1.20. My actual WAN address is a 80.xx.xx.xx type. Have you gone through the reboot as described? Each time you switch between usb and ethernet you must do it. What happens is your cable modem assignes the real ip to the usb cable port. Then when you swap over to the ethernet the port does not give out an ip. What you must do is got through the full reset for the modem to recognise the connected ethernet cable and assign the ip to that port. |

OK JUST TRIED AGAIN AS PER UR STEPS HM, BUT TO NO AVAIL :erm:
see attached screen shots of ip thingy when connected to usb and when connected to ethernet... i guess u will know which one is which  |
Re: changing from usb to ethernet!
Are you using a firewall ?
If so, disable it temporarily and see what happens. |
Re: changing from usb to ethernet!
hmm, I'd be tempted to try another ethernet card. the 169 address is assigned by your computer.
btw the physical address that you blank out need'nt be, it has no information that can be used against you. |
