Wed, 3 May 2006 22:19:13 UTC 1st 512K took 3906 ms = 131.1 KB/sec, approx 1080 Kbps, 1.05 Mbps 2nd 512K took 2907 ms = 176.1 KB/sec, approx 1451 Kbps, 1.42 Mbps 3rd 512K took 2843 ms = 180.1 KB/sec, approx 1484 Kbps, 1.45 Mbps 4th 512K took 3688 ms = 138.8 KB/sec, approx 1144 Kbps, 1.12 Mbps Overall Average Speed = approx 1290 Kbps, 1.26 Mbps Been on 10mb since December, was upgraded from 3mb FOC and yet to see any speed increase. Tech support have told me there are issues which should be resolved shortly. That was over a month ago , so what now? they have put me on different server. Yes I get 6-7 mb for alittle while then back to 2 or less than 1mb Help someone please 6 months @ £35 for a 1mb connection, ADSL gets more inviting everyday Hondacurver |

Re: 10mb connection
I find that this speedtest can give wildly differing results in a run.
My widest spread was from 0.1M to 80M. But usually I'd average around 2-3Mb. As a STB "cripple" i am happy(ish) with around 5-6M which is what I get for large downloads from well mirrored servers. The "best" is the 132M+ I get at ntlhell. |

Re: 10mb connection
I've recently been upgraded from 3mb (which was fine) to 10mb - which is ~10kb a sec with pings of about 500ms (!)
It's ok, but falls to it's knees around 4pm, and is useless until about midnight. Currently: Fri, 05 May 2006 17:37:17 GMT 1st 512K took 1562 ms = 327.8 KB/sec, approx 2701 Kbps, 2.64 Mbps 2nd 512K took 27250 ms = 18.8 KB/sec, approx 155 Kbps, 0.15 Mbps 3rd 512K took 6844 ms = 74.8 KB/sec, approx 616 Kbps, 0.6 Mbps 4th 512K took 4859 ms = 105.4 KB/sec, approx 868 Kbps, 0.85 Mbps Overall Average Speed = approx 1085 Kbps, 1.06 Mbps What that doesn't say is that pings in-game, and generally, are useless. A web page will take about 5 seconds to load. Most importantly, a World of Warcraft (two independant UDP streams of events) gives semi-crap download (latencies of ~300ms, not that much of a problem) but the upload is utterly crap. I'm getting latencies on upload via UDP of between 1000ms and 7500ms, which is just ridiculous. Next year (contract ends in june, IIRC) I'm going for 8196/512 ADSL! Edit: formatting bug |

Re: 10mb connection
I have been experiencing some poor d/l speeds recently so have decided to run a speed test. I've been on 10mb for a few months now and the speeds have never been as slow as this.
Here are my speed results: Sun, 07 May 2006 11:43:21 GMT 1st 512K took 1937 ms = 264.3 KB/sec, approx 2178 Kbps, 2.13 Mbps 2nd 512K took 1625 ms = 315.1 KB/sec, approx 2596 Kbps, 2.54 Mbps 3rd 512K took 1343 ms = 381.2 KB/sec, approx 3141 Kbps, 3.07 Mbps 4th 512K took 2015 ms = 254.1 KB/sec, approx 2094 Kbps, 2.04 Mbps Overall Average Speed = approx 2502 Kbps, 2.45 Mbps Anyone got any advice?! That was done with nothing else using the connection. My location (if important) is Derby (DE1). I'm also using a cable modem (one of the very first silver ones) and using ethernet connection. Thanks Tim |

Have a look here - http://www.adslguide.org.uk/tools/sp...54659707424222
Even though thats the speed its been tested at, I'm stilling getting full speed downloads, which is what I'm trying to say! With nothing else happening, no multi-player games being played, nothing being downloaded, msn messenger closed, anything else that messes with the internet connection disabled for the test. |
Re: 10mb connection
I watched a program on google video a few nights back and it started skipping, I clicked the link to where can contact them for feedback and got this reply.

am i missing something here. i have a 10 meg connection here in belfast and i regulary download at 1.2 MB per second. is this the normal spped for a 10 meg line or should i be seeing more?
cheers big sinky |
Re: 10mb connection
I cant define normal but thats the max so is a good speed.
Out of interest what sources give you that speed assuming they public or are you saying no matter where you download from just random downloads you usually get 1.2meg ie. download.com etc. So I can compare directly. |

Re: 10mb connection
Just been off teh phone with ntl technical support, told him about the slow speed i cant get above about 80KB/s using teh web browser. although i am getting over 400KB/s off giganews :erm:
He went through some tests, made me boot up in safe mode and try the speed test (homepage.ntlworld.com/testmyspeed used the 2mb test) got about 25KB/s. He then took my ip details and changed server or summat and rebooted teh modem. Tried the test again and got 65KB/s. He then said that he had done all the tests he could do and booked me an engineer for thursday! He told me that he will assess the situation and see if i need a new modem, i then sarcastically replied, "Yeah, a new modem would be nice!" So hopefully when this dude turns up he can gimme a new 250 modem and i can put this nthell behind me! ;) I'll keep ya posted P.S I had to use my mobile to ring technical support as i dont have a house phone, was on hold for ages and the testing process went on fo a while. To cut a long story short i ended up using about £13 talktime! better than the £50 for the modem i spose. Been putting off ringin for ages |

Re: 10mb connection
Just had the engineer round. I told him that i had been getting really slow speeds. I showed him the test my speed page (homepage.ntlworld.com/testmyspeed) was only getting 25KB/s :(
He had some sort of line tester thing with him and said that the connection was strong, checked the ping and was pretty good. Then said, "Well i'm gonna try a new modem and see if that works" He popped out to his van and appeared with a box containing the rather smart and compact looking blue 250 modem. He removed my old ntlhome 100 pants modem. he connected it up and started entering numbers into his phone, i assumed to send details of the new modem to be registered. Told me to wait 20 minutes and it should be sorted. 20 mins later: Thu, 11 May 2006 08:59:20 UTC 1st 512K took 422 ms = 1213.3 KB/sec, approx 9998 Kbps, 9.76 Mbps 2nd 512K took 437 ms = 1171.6 KB/sec, approx 9654 Kbps, 9.43 Mbps 3rd 512K took 438 ms = 1169 KB/sec, approx 9633 Kbps, 9.41 Mbps 4th 512K took 422 ms = 1213.3 KB/sec, approx 9998 Kbps, 9.76 Mbps Overall Average Speed = approx 9821 Kbps, 9.59 Mbps Jobs a good un! I can now pay £35 quid a month and actually get 10mb! For those who are having similar problems (100 and 120 modems) dont hesitate to ring tech support and get your self a new modem. Dont put up with paying for a service you arent using. Cheers |

1st 512K took 406 ms = 1261.1 KB/sec, approx 10391 Kbps, 10.15 Mbps 2nd 512K took 437 ms = 1171.6 KB/sec, approx 9654 Kbps, 9.43 Mbps 3rd 512K took 438 ms = 1169 KB/sec, approx 9633 Kbps, 9.41 Mbps 4th 512K took 422 ms = 1213.3 KB/sec, approx 9998 Kbps, 9.76 Mbps Overall Average Speed = approx 9919 Kbps, 9.69 Mbps I'm pretty happy with this. Considering it was a free upgrade, you can't ask for better. I might add though that even though I always get speeds like this, it depends hugely which website I am visiting or downloading from. Some are so slow that you feel like you are back on 512 but others fly. Also, sometimes my computer is on a bit of a go slow yet my laptop is flying. You can't always blame the broadband speed. PS I note that people who actually unddrstand what they are talkking about aren't the ones threatening to go to Talk Talk!!!!1 Good luck to those who are sucked in by the 'free' service!! Report back to us to let us know how good it is Lol |
Re: 10mb connection
Thats pretty impressive, decent efficeincy on that 10Mb line.
I was surprised earlier, getting 3.9mbps over the wireless link, usually struggle to hit 3.4 My question is, how does the weather effect line speeds? if at all... |

Re: 10mb connection
In most cases if you have the older modems (100,120) getting the new 250 will improve tha speeds. The engineer tested the cable at mine and the signal or whatever was strong so it was clearly the older modem that was affecting the overall speed.
In quite a few cases the newer modem hasnt helped. I suppose it just helps you find out whether or not the modem is a factor. I get the feeling a lot of people havent rang for an engineer to come out and check the connection. It is a ball ache to do. Thankfully for me it payed off. If your getting really bad speeds like i was and have the older modems then dont hesistate to get it sorted. The problem is those who have the older modems and are getting 6 or 7 meg. As its supposed to be an up to 10mb service, youd probably get fobbed off. I think mine was a worse case scenario. Also different areas arounfd the uk have different problems. The engineer that i had said they were having problems at the minute, i had to stop myself from saying,"No SH_T! :) |
