1 Attachment(s)
Here you go, cracked my CD open especially for you :)

When you install the USB part just point it to wherever you extracted this Zip to, it should do the rest itself.

This includes the whole driver section of the disc :)

EDIT: and this disc came with the 5101e model, the same as yours :)

Use the ethernet port instead ?

It's much more efficient at carrying the data in the first place.

Ok, this sounds like you simply have a problem with the settings in your browser, specially if you've tried both.

:welcome: to the forum.

A few things. First, the drivers are apparently contained in the link in post 2.

Second, please don't use all capitals. It is considered "shouting".

I've got similar problems - I downloaded the drivers from the blueyonder and from the Motorola website and the same from here. They are all the same and the file you need is system file that doesn't execute. The tech support people at Blueyonder say that it doesn't work and I have to wait until next Monday for the CD!
Anyone help?

Odd. Mine were taken from the CD itself.

Which file is causing problems, if you know which one.

Re: Motorola SB5101E USB drivers needed

Is it a .sys or .ini or .inf file by any chance? It most likely IS the driver, and when running the Add New Hardware wizard in Windows XP, you would just select the directory containing that file and it should install it.

Glad they did mate ;)

Rooonga, try switching off your modem and PC.
Connect the USB cable from one to the other.
Switch your modem on.
Wait 2 - 3minutes.
Switch your PC on.
Give it chance to fully load up... And try surfing.

If that doesn't work we can then try other steps in case.

You can pickup a Ethernet cable at marlins for about £4.99 that would be better than usb.

Also seen patch cables in ASDA and Tesco, it might be worth trying your local superstore.
£3 in ASDA.

Also VM don't have usb drivers for Vista so you'd need to get them direct from Motorola
and then it's unsupported if things go wrong.
Ethernet is definitely better.

Please find below the link for the Motorola support page with VISTA Driver downloads

http://broadband.motorola.com/consum...on=CableModems

BUT I DO REALLY RECOMMEND ONLY TO USE AN ETHERNET LEAD AS YOU WILL NOT GET SPEEDS ABOVE 6Mb USING USB.

It would be a lot simpler if you just used an ethernet cable to connect into the top socket on the back of your modem, even if it means getting a Network Interface Card fitted in your machine they are less than £10 to buy.

If you are on ethernet then the is no requirement for the install disk which we have not issued since May 2008 because they started to freeze in modern machines, all you need to do is unplug the power cable for 10 seconds and it will reboot read the MAC address of the piece equipment is connected to and go through the DORA process with the Virgin servers and retrieve an IP address from them, it is that simple.

It looks like you may have wiped your network card off your computer and you should go to control panel>classic view>network adaptors and look for it threre if it is not listed go back to control panel and look for >system>hardware>device manager>network adaptors and check if it is still listed, if it is there try deleting it and restarting your computer and it should reinstall with the New hardware found process and follow the instructions, if it does not reinstall you will need to buy a new Network Card and install it, then you will be back online.

When conecting via Ethernet, your computer has no way of detecting the device on the other side of the cable. All it can detect is that it is able to send and recieve data. It has no way of detecting what sent or recieved that data.

If you have just reinstalled your computer, you may need some driver software for your Ethernet socket. Try going to the support section of the manufacturer's website and download and install any drivers listed for your computer there.

Re: Motorola SB5101E USB drivers needed

I just rememberd, While I was looking for my install disk for my D-Link DI-624, I found some Dell disks that say "These are already installed on your computer"
Since I wiped my hard drive, those wouldn't be on the computer anymore. I go into the device manager, and it doesn't list anything that sounds/looks like an internet port. I'm using the one straight from my motherboard.

Ethernet Controller
Realtek RTL 8139 fast family ethernet adaptor

Should see something along those lines under the heading of Network Adaptors or if not installed properly under the heading of Other Devices.

I see the ethernet controller
I click it, then go to the resources tab, and it says
Resource Settings:
This device isn't using any resources because it has a problem.

Under the general tab it say
Device type: Other Devices
Manufaturer:Unknown
Location:PCI bus 3, device 8, function 0

Device status(box around it)
The drivers for this device are not installed.(Code28)
To Re-Install the drivers for this device, click Reinstall Driver

Tell me if anything is wrong here.

EDIT: I'm using the dell Driver & Utilities disk, and i need to seperately install everything that it is saying is not already on the system. I will tell you if it works.

You need to use ethernet as when you receive your free upgrade to 10Mb you will never achieve that using USB.

But if you really need the drivers here they are http://www.virginmedia.com/help/broa...sb-drivers.php

Re: Motorola SB5101E USB drivers needed

If you are using a Motorola SB5101E on the Virgin network then you need to really change to Ethernet as USB connection has not been supported for almost 3 years.

Plus if you are using Vista then it will not work anyway.

The drivers are available on the Virgin site but are not supported by them and you can find them here. http://www.virginmedia.com/help/broa...sb-drivers.php

If they do not work do not call support as they will be unable to offer support and will just advise you to upgrade to Ethernet.

tom123456789 22-12-2009 08:59

Re: Motorola SB5101E USB drivers needed

Do you need any software to upgrade to ethernet, or is it simply the different cable?
Please excuse my ignorance! Thanks

Kymmy 22-12-2009 09:03

Re: Motorola SB5101E USB drivers needed

Simply a different cable

tom123456789 22-12-2009 09:08

Re: Motorola SB5101E USB drivers needed

Ah, great.
My problem is that my old computer died, my temporary one doesn't have the software to speak to my Motorola surfboard 5101E since its pretty ancient, I've lost the CD and struggling to gather what I need to download...
So the simple switching to an ethernet cable might do the business?

Please assume that I know absolutley nothing, since thats true!

Druchii 22-12-2009 09:11

Re: Motorola SB5101E USB drivers needed

Just switch to an ethernet cable. Your PC should pick up the connection instantly.

You may need to switch off the modem entirely for around 10-20secs and then back on to get it to recognise the new connection though.

Re: Motorola SB5101E USB drivers needed

As long as the network card is set to automatically get an IP address (DHCP) then it'll find the modem and you should have instant internet, remember though what's already been said when you change from USB to ethernet you need to reboot the modem and then start the PC

Its an Acer. Very basic model. Unfortunately I've not got it infront of me. Could maybe tell you later in the afternoon.
I really appreciate your help!

Kymmy 22-12-2009 10:51

Re: Motorola SB5101E USB drivers needed

No probs, the model number will allow anyone to go only and grab the hardware specs of the laptop.

If it hasn't got ethernet built in then there are options like USB or PCMCIA ethernet cards. Or if you have/aquire a wifi router then you can use (if fitted) an internal wifi chipset or even usb dongle

You can though go back to using the USB modem as Moldova has provided you with the driver in post #62

tom123456789 22-12-2009 10:55

Re: Motorola SB5101E USB drivers needed

I'll give that software a try, although from looking back in through the posts, there may be a slight difference from the software available there and my modem. The available software is for the SB5101, not the one with the E at the end. I'm not sure if this still makes any odds?

Kymmy 22-12-2009 11:02

Re: Motorola SB5101E USB drivers needed

You'll find that the E just specifies something like Eurodocsis (which is the cable connection and not the USB), it won't effect the USB output which probably will require the same drivers for the whole series..

musicbravo 22-12-2009 13:07

Re: Motorola SB5101E USB drivers needed

If laptop is older i would have though it would have an ethernet port. All my mprevious laptops up to around 10 years ago definately had one. Ditch the USB connection it is not capable of Virgin's high speeds. (I don't know it's exact limits but i'm sure i've heard it will struggle with even a 10Mb connection)

Kymmy 22-12-2009 13:12

Re: Motorola SB5101E USB drivers needed

I have a laptop which is about 6 years old (Panasonic toughbook) we stick to it as we don't need the fast speed for what we use it for (data logging of ECU data and reconfiguration on the move) at motorsport events.. It has no ethernet or wifi yet is a very expensive laptop..

As for USB if it's USB1 then yes you;d get about 6-8Mb, USB 2 is fine at 50Mb+
