It was more a question of can TV be added to that package ;) ie, Base pack is £11/m + £10.50 phone, so can you get the Base pack & above package for £31.99?

Similar price as 3 for 33, but this package includes 2Mb BB & TUL24!

Maybe because Ntl force you to have their phone line if you want to take TV service from them
- or has this changed now? :erm:

it's likely to be a 'rententions' deal - ie. straight calls to customer services wont get you it but if you ask to cancel you will be transferred to the department of 'nice people'. aka retentions aka cancellations

Hmm, that must explain why they bent over backwards to sort out my 9-month-long problem in five minutes as soon as I mentioned the "c-word"...!

Phoned NTL to Disconnect and...

I rang NTL rententions today to switch to TalkTalk and low and behold they offered to match TalkTalk's service with me keeping my 10meg broadband, phone w/ talk unlimited24 and they will refund ALL international calls at end of each month all this for £22.79. Good Deal ???? I think so

This price is for as long as i stay with NTL.

I'd double and triple check this bit. Does it apply to all destinations or just the talk talk ones?
Also do you have to call in each month for the refund or will they do it automatically?
I'd make sure the points like speed etc. and the lifetime offer were noted on the account and you have the details of who authorised it.

Its a good deal but I'd make sure of it as they might have just been saying what they needed to say in order to keep you for a few more months.

Whoever you got in retentions for this wants their head examinded. They can't expect to give this type of offer out to people without any limitations being mentioned. Already getting a hefty discount on the 10Mb broadband with free phoneline + calls will get out to other customers and eventually everyone will want put onto it.

SLM 13-04-2006 11:34

Re: NTL offering package to challenge talk talk

Heard about this on radio 2 business news, they said that they could see happening what happened when dial-up 1st came out, everyone went to the cheapest/fast (at the time) and after a few weeks of over loading no-one could get on or your connection crashed half way thru DL a file.

I would like to see talk talk prove me and them [rad2] wrong as it seems to good to be true a deal.

zeus9876 13-04-2006 11:35

Re: Phoned NTL to Disconnect and...

I am still on the phone to them but as for international calls i only call the USA so i dont care for the other destinations. will ring CS when i hang up and double check. As for the refund the bloke says he will keep an eye on the account and when each bill is due he will refund eash month. I dont mind if i have to ring up and do it myself as long as i am saving. Just got off the phone he said he applied 3 things to my account.

1 1/2 price line rental for 3 months
2 £8.50 discount for something cant remember...will have to wait for next bill i think
3 1/2 price 10meg broadband for 3 months

he did say that international calls are for like 30 countries

at the end of every 3 months these same credits/deductions will be reapplied. Again i dont mind if i have to ring them up and remind them as its saving me nearly £40 every month

I can tell you now, they will not be reapplied (even though he said so), and in 3 months time they might well say the offer has changed (like they did for me).. But anyway, 3 months is better than nothing. :)

Re: NTL offering package to challenge talk talk

After asking to cancel, retentions offered me half price phone & 2Mb broadband, plus free Talk Unlimited 24, for 12 months.

I grudgingly accepted.

Re: NTL offering package to challenge talk talk

Has anyone else got a better deal from retentions after rob got it (nice work btw!)

At home we've got the standard 3 for £30 deal, no probs with the tv (not been jerky for a good few months now :Yikes: ) or phone, but the net...well its just too slow. Browsing is fine but trying to download off bittorrent?? Takes too long! The upload is the main problem i guess and bittorrent rags our wireless network. At uni we had telewest (I honestly still cant believe they're effectively the same company as NTL) and had 2mb and it made such a difference. The upload was twice what i'm on now. And as there are deals flying around at the mo, and UK Online offer 22mb!! bb for £30 I feel hard done by!

I would therefore be very interested in somehow getting our internet upgraded (and maybe talk ul24 in the process) and if it just takes a threat to cancel..well it won't be the first time ;)

So I'm paying 24.99 for 2MB and I already have my telephone with TalkTalk. I think ntl are taking the **** out of me.

I'm going to call them about this, I expect to get the 2MB I have now for LESS than 20.99 as I don't even need/use the phone service.

wat about existing customers that are in the contract... the problem is that i have had ntl for well over a couple of years, but my broadband only started this Feb [1 yr contract!] [as ntl took 7-8 years to get bband in my area:p: ] If i call them up then would i be able to get this deal?

edit, 7-8 years mite be a bit much, but deffo 5 minimum!

i got crappy £40 a month:
TV BASE AND TELEPHONE LINE RENTAL
TU24
10mb broadband
1 ASIAN CHANNEL [worth £6]

so basically better off, but doing all the calculations, £5.50 a month worse off than my neighbour

Yeah indeed we'll see, how long does that discount last?

Seems obscenely cheap either way, well under half price.

If ntl can do this without losing money it shows they are royally ripping customers off for the current packages, however seeing their margins I'm pretty sure this'd be a loss leader.

Anyway keep up the good work with retentions guys, let's see if it makes ntl rethink.

They might even try taking better care of their customers rather than throwing discounts at them to make them stay, and even when customers routinely phone up to ask for discounts letting them go, a customer isn't worth anything if they aren't making you money.

I know the ntl mindset is permeating the ex-Telewest employees and they aren't happy about it. They are being set stupid and basically unachievable targets. One of the main issues being that Telewest actually credit check and care what the credit check says whereas ntl will happily sell to anyone to get the figures looking nice. After all the 'figures' can be painted to look good even if the company itself is deeply in the gutter.

They said it would last for aslong as i stay with ntl. The only thing i dont like is that they have only applied this offer for 3 months so i will more than likely have to ring up every 3 months to remind them which i dont mind because it's saving me £40 a month. And when they tell me that this is no longer available i will leave.

etccarmageddon 13-04-2006 16:44

erm that's a contradiction - it's available for as long as you stay with them but you have to ring up to ask for it every 3 months.

Ok so maybe i didn't word that right. They said that they would add the discounts to my account every 3 months but as we all know how forgetful NTL are so what i was saying is I do not expect it to be added every 3 months so therefore i will have to ring up CS and remind them to add it to my account instead of relying on NTL to do it. It's gonna have to be done manually every 3 months.

Hope this comes across better.

James Henry 13-04-2006 17:40

Re: NTL offering package to challenge talk talk

You'll be leaving pretty soon then, it's ridiculous that they discount from over 60 quid a month to 23 with no contract to make sure they get the money back from you paying full price, and I can't see it lasting, they just can't make money.

Although this is ntl, for whom profit is a swearword, so maybe they will, after all a triple play customer is far more important than actually making money on said customer :D

EDIT: I would actually strongly question whether retentions could discount this deeply without serious management involvement.

why pay 1bn for a company if you have no money ? why not just purchase telewest and rebrand ?

of course they have money :dunce:

ntl / telewest / whoever they are will have to pay 0.25% royalties on its revenue for three decades - with a minimum annual payment of £8.5m - to Virgin Enterprises for the use of the brand name created by Sir Richard.

This is OT but Ntl swapped shares with Dicky Branson for Virgin mobile, he now owns 12.5% (or whatever) on the combined Ntl/Telewest/Virgin company AIUI hardly any money was spend.

Ntl are skint. Why do you think they're not expanding by building extensions to their network?

This is all academic anyway. If Ntl are selling BB/Phone line/Calls for less than it costs them to provide then they'll go bust anyway regardless of weather they have cash spare or not.

If you're really interested I'm sure there's a thread knocking about with the details of the merger/acquisition with info from Frank/Neil on exactly how much money and shares were involved.

Edit - Can't find that post bu here's another: http://www.cableforum.co.uk/board/sh...&postcount=124

Edit #2 - Even Bill C states there's no moey for repairs: http://www.cableforum.co.uk/board/sh...&postcount=119

Well you know this is because the shareholders are seeing customer numbers more important then actual profit numbers, I bet they are on a mission to just get more and more customers no matter what the cost. Just cram them in.

Yet they could work on improving their quality raise prices a little and have half the customers leftover but with a much healthier profit.

---------- Post added at 18:32 ---------- Previous post was at 18:26 ----------

I think bill is happy to pay more for a better service, but seeing as NTL appear to be doing dumb things on tues I will be ringing for my free TU24 :D

To go with my half price 10meg (due to congestion, probably result of cramming customers in who half are loss leaders), and 3 for £30 discount.

Ntl never learn and will keep been happy having customers that they pay for so I might as well just play along.

Re: NTL offering package to challenge talk talk

I think you can say that connection SPEED is "guaranteed" with NTL cable (as opposed to the "up to 8Mb" of ADSL (assuming perfect conditions) , but usable throughput is not guaranteed on either!

I guess it's worth having a pop at retentions (best offer for Family pack, phone not used much, as we kept the BT line and uses the NTL for dialup originally , broadband - currently 1Mb).

Note, there IS a BT line, and I've already checked that the special IS available (first one that has been!).

Just depends... TT seem to have no news server (compared to a restricted one with NTL) and to already throttle P2P (which NTL seem likely to do) - would mean biting the bullet on the £29.99 charge, and another £16 for an Ethernet modem, so maybe better to see if NTL have something approaching a price match.

I would sooner have 2 meg that works continuously and consistently than a 10 meg that goes up and down like a whores draws.

You know, if this was my company and idiots kept ringing up saying they wanted to leave just to get a good deal i'd say, so be it, leave, goodbye, i'm sure i'd make more money letting these rats leave rather then giving out these mad deals.
It isn't fair that some of us are paying full price for our service, yet people getting 10MB Broadband, digital TV and phone pay less then what i do for 2MB Broadband, NTL need to get themselves in line and STOP handing out mad offers like these.

What's idiotic about making a 5-minute phone call that saves you £100's? Who's the idiot?

I'm still in my first year, but I'll be straight on the phone at the end of it.

The system might be wrong, but you'd be mad not to use it like everyone else does.

Perhaps NTL are happy with people paying 2p a month after their 12 months are up. The installation's all paid for, so it's free money for them, 2p more than if you cancelled. The idiots are those who keep paying for the "free" installation after the first 12 months.

Yes it works, just rang CS, told them I was thinking of cancelling, they put me through to the next dept, who asked why. I said talk talk is cheaper, so they offered me a price match !! £20.99 pm for unlimited uk calls, line rental and 2mb BB ;) (never had the tv, so wasn't interested in that).

Needless to say, I took the offer! I see it as a reward for 10 years loyalty to NTL/Cabletel !

I will however be double checking the bill when it comes !!

I just rang CS Like Merlin did but they said there was no package to compete with Talk Talk and to get the same services would cost £32.99 So I guess it all depends who you get to talk to at CS as to whether you get a deal or not, Which is totally unfair as all customers should be able to get the same deals.

I think you probably have to ring retentions and ask to leave first.

I've tried this a few times over the past 4 or 5 yrs with ntl... always worked. My last deal was 10mb for 6 months at £19 a month, this has only just finished about a month ago... I only got that because of ringing retentions and threatening to go with Be.. Plus they messed up my bill, so I used that as a gripe too. I'd feel a bit cheeky ringing them back to try and get another deal so soon after my last one. :erm:

Okay i just rang up, and i was on hold for about 20 mins with the whole thing lasting about 35 mins:erm: Good job the call was free :disturbd:

Anyway, this is what i got:
2 meg broadband =£12.49 (I'm currently paying £17.99 for one meg)
Phone Talk Unlimited 24 + free international calls: £12.25
This totals £24.74, but she said i'll be getting a credit every month of £3.75 to make up the difference of the Talk Talk plan, so will only be paying the £20.99. :)

So wooot thanks for telling us about this OP, it's saving me about £25 a month i reckon:tu:
One thing though, does that mean i'm on 2 meg now what do i have to do? Does this mean i get Broadband Plus too?
She also said that all 2 meg customers will be getting upgraded in the next 6-8 months to 10 meg

paul11974 18-04-2006 11:28

Re: NTL offering package to challenge talk talk

after being on hold for 30 minutes they offered me

1mb broadband

talk unlimited 24

base pack tv

£21.49 but this is for 6 months only when i will have to ring them again because there deals change all the time so for 6months £21.49 and free uk calls 24hrs a day not bad as i was paying £33 and call charges so a nice saving :tu:

Hi again,

Gaz, I did say I wanted to leave.... and it wasn't customer services who offered me the deal, it was someone who I was forwarded to... I presume retentions.

As for International, didn't ask, don't care as I've no use for it.

What counts for me is the approx £20 savings I make per month, from £24.99 for 2MB BB plus line rental and call charges (around £14 - £20) totalling around £40 to a fixed price of £20.99.

Re: NTL offering package to challenge talk talk

OK - I called to cancel - held for 45 minutes to speak to disconnections  Told the quite sympathetic Lady I was taking up the Talk Talk offer. She gave in without a fight and started to process my cancellation  During this process I asked if they were prepared to keep my custom (since 1999) with any price matches? After some light haggling :argue: I agreed to stay with 2Mb Broadband - Talk Unlimited 24 - Line Rental - Phone extras ie itemised billing - call divert - voicemail - for £21. I rarely dial outside the UK and have no great need for a greater bandwidth - I'm probably a typical customer in that sense...
She said I would need to call back in three months when there would be a new offer available - or I could just renew this offer for 12 months.
Whilst she was setting the new pricing up - I asked her about the state of play - and she was very frank in saying they were losing customers 'constantly' - people were leaving and cancelling in droves. The tone was very much that she had given up the 'fight' to keep customers now:tired:

Personally I have had 'issues' with NTL Technical support - who hasn't... But overall the service has been good - so I am quite prepared to stay for now with this new offer.

This was inevitable, & something that I felt would happen.

What ntl should now be doing IMO is putting together an official deal to offer customers who phone to jump ship to CPW-they should also be locking those customers in by making them agree to an 18 month contract (same as CPW)

No customers=No business.

No customers=Uhnappy shareholders.

Will ntl ever learn?

I don't know if i rang the right one, but i dialled 150, option 2, then he put me through to disconnections. It worked anyway:shrug:

How long does it generally take for the speed to be upgraded? I can't see any change after rebooting?

Don't worry, I'll keep paying the full price to subsidise you grabbing freeloaders!

...but when my 12 months are up, I'll be ringing up like the rest of you :)

This is a crazy situation though. Usually, by the time retentions speak to a customer, they have already chosen their new ISP, taken a 12-month contract, set up direct debits etc. Many of them can't be persuaded to stay at this point, whatever the deal.

NTL need to discount heavily or they'll lose much more money in lost customers.

you speak to customer services - their job is to stop you leaving by offering you a current 'normal' deal - retentions is the last resort (also known as cancellations). customer services transfer you to retentions when they have given up trying to keep you. retentions is where the real money is to be made if you're an existing customer. e.g. they once offered me half price TV family pack plus phone - for as long as I wanted - so £28 a month was reduced to £14. all because I wanted to ditch my TV and phone and just have a cable modem.

No Dagga, not having a pop at all, just don't go on chat anymore, thought you were him (he's a good mate) ... As for miserable, well as I live in Hudds, yes the bus station is still there. I know what you mean.., personally though I prefer a hilly countyside like the lake district....

It should be almost instant sometimes even whilst they still on the phone with you, if nothing happens within 2 hours I would reboot the modem to try and force then ring back if that doesnt work.

have looked into switching, bt have confirmed free reconection but minimum 3 months connection, which might be to much of a pain 3 months with bt before i could then switch to talk talk.
