best router?
Hello
Could some one recomend me a wirless router for ntl broadband? linksys or D-Link? any specyfic models? Greetings |
Re: best router?
Hi,
I would suggest reading the article at the top of this networking forum - 'Router Recommendations'! (Linksys WRT54G or GS is what a lot around here use) |
Re: best router?
i love WRT54g yeah
|
Re: best router?
Many people here use the Linksys routers and are very happy with them.
:welcome: to the forums. |
Re: best router?
depends on what all your needs are? Best advice I can give is stick with a name, linksys, d-link, belkin etc... dont go for the cheap no names... i've had nothing but trouble with them, especially sweex! utter crap brand!

Re: best router?
Using a Linksys WRK54G here, no problems from the router yet, apart from the odd dropout every now and again.
It's my wireless card that's given me hassle. |
Re: best router?
Using a Linksys WRK54G here, no problems from the router changed teh firmware to this and the router has never missed.

Sadly, mine's a WRT54GS v5, which runs on a different operating system. It seems to be being worked on, though, one way or another - hopefully one day soon there'll be a version that'll work with it. |
Re: best router?
5 Attachment(s)
I will post some screenshots if you want it is very good and has more to offer than what came with the Linksys WRT54GS I didnt check which version I had just flashed it with this and its been working 100% better than before.

Unlike: Gigabyte GN-BR401 - 2 friends had them, both failed outside warranty. Benq ESG-103 - notoriously incompatible with PACE STB (a friend has one, works fine with with SACM or Samsung) The cheapest Ebuyer (Safecom) model also had a pretty bad reputation for killing connection speed. Only wireless one I've seen in use so far, is a friend's USR8022 - sorted that one out for them specially, as they really needed a wireless link but had thoughts of going back to dialup (before the price gap between broadband and non-payg dialup of any quality collapsed) - miserable range, struggles to maintain a connection upstairs (though I gather that can be a weakness of WiFi - goes more out than up). |

Shame there doesn't seem to be a version that could run on a WRK54G :( |

Re: best router?
DD-WRT mini can run on a V5 - the only alternate firmware that can.
A friend managed to pick up a V4 not so long ago - a little smaller than the previous ones, but still a Linux model to start with. |
Re: best router?
Surely it's not possible without making hardware modifications, even with the mini version?

Re: best router?
So I take it that if you buy a WRT54GL-UK now, it'll be V5 - and that there are issues with this? Anything that'd affect everyday use?
Anyone any experience with Buffalo Airstation products, particularly the high power (WHR-HP-G54)? |
Re: best router?
As far as I know, yes, it'll probably be V5. You can check as each box is marked with the serial code - if you look on the DD-WRT site, it'll tell you which serial codes = which version. There's no issue for everyday use, V5 works fine for that - it's just for those of us who want it bit more that it doesn't. :)

Re: best router?
Cheers geezer, wondered if that was the case!
Stupid question time, perhaps - does the 54GS (speedbooster version) work happily with normal 11g equipment - I know they say it will, but saying and doing isn't necessarily the same thing, IME! |

This might be of interest to someone.
Previously Unhackable: DD-WRT Now available on the WRT54G v5 and WRT54GS v5 |
Re: best router?
The problem is that it still requires hardware modifications, which just aren't an option for a lot of people. Sadly. :(

Re: best router?
In case the info helps anyone else, I got a WRT54G (not speedbooster) in the end, and very pleased with it I am.
It's on the ground floor front room at the mo in a typical Edwardian terrace house, and I'm getting a full speed connection two floors up in the loft, at the rear of the house, and good speeds at the bottom of the garden. Set up was dead easy even for a novice, and sorting out the security was no problem. The only glitch I did have was I tried to use the start up CD to set it up as instructed, and it hung partway through each time - in the end I used the set up instructions in the user guide. |

I got one about 2 days, ago, took my WRK model back as it was stupid, disconnected all the time etc... The WRT54G V5 of mine is really good, i don't see why i'd need hacked firmware on this model, albeit i wanted to have a wifi hotspot for the people down the street to access my server from (they have no internet connection, just old wireless hardware) |
Re: best router?
Yes, meant to say it was a V5.
I must admit to one bit of stupidity though - my fault, not Linksys', but I'll mention it, again in case anyone else is looking for info! The first run through the setup CD it hung because it was trying to autodetect the NTL settings, and I was too quick off the mark for NTL - as I understand it, the account wasn't fully set up and running. The one quibble I'd have with the setup wizard is there isn't an exit or cancel button - maybe it can't be done for some reason, I don't know. Anyway, I had to reset the (half configured) router to start again, got distracted, did the reset wrong, and corrupted the firmware (Doh!). Still, a quick investigate on Linksys' website got me into the firmware set up routine - very straightforward - and shortly after all was happy again! |
Re: best router?
hi i have the WRT54GS v4 with speed booster.
am after some help on it if poss folks......... i run a dc server online and ive had some wally keep attacking me. everything web side freezes then i lose all modem functions and have to reboot modem and router again. it has been a bit of a pain, as i assume this is a dos attack against me. my question is is it possible in this router to protect ones self against such attacks and where on earth on setup pages can i find what ip has been doing this. (and is it possible to bounce all pings back at whoever it is) cheers in advance all you techies. gazz |
Re: best router?
I have a Netgear WGR614 v9 router provided by Virgin Media and all is fine except there's a spot in my house where the signal is only average at best.
Is this a case of needing a different/better router and is this a known problem with this router? The distance from the router to the problem area is around 20 ft. There are some internal walls in between the 2 points but there are other areas of the house where this is so and the signal is excellent. What would you recommend? |
