Change of service?

My Broadband service from NTL seems to have changed from 10MB to 1MB :erm: Modem's fine. Not sure what to do - no connection issue. Maybe someone's just pressed the wrong button somewhere and it'll sort itself out

Re: Change of service?

Is the correct tier level file on the modem? I take it you have tried rebooting the modem etc.

greencreeper 10-04-2006 18:52

Re: Change of service?

The status pages for the modem don't seem to mention the speed anywhere - unless I'm missing something. I've rebooted it and the PC.

I noticed slow streaming - 44Kbps and less, which is dire. The speed test on this site normally reports around 8MB but it's just over 1MB at the moment. Something's not right.

Re: Change of service?

If you have an ntl 250 then go to this page - default user/password should be root/root.

http://192.168.100.1/CmOpConfig.asp

Post back the figures for upstream/downstream data rate. If you have a cm other than the ntl 250 just hunt around looking for upstream/downstream data rates on the setup/status pages for your own flavour of modem.

greencreeper 10-04-2006 19:18

Re: Change of service?

Downstream power: -4.5 dBmV
Downstream SNR: 31.5 dB
Upstream power: 50.50 dBmV

All within the ranges posted by Ignition :nworthy: which is why I said modem was fine.

Maximum Downstream Data Rate : 2048000
Maximum Upstream Data Rate : 200000

J, I know the system for your modem is currently being upgraded so no-one can have pressed the wrong button to change your speed as we can't access it full stop

Well that's good. I think :erm: :D I was thinking more along the lines of the engineers - all those wires. Must be easy to make a mistake

Just ran Dan Elwells speed test, set it to 1MB as my service - http://homepage.ntlworld.com/dwarfin...skin/test.html

Is what you should be getting if your on a 10Mb connection - you cable modem is configured for 2Mb downstream, upstream is a bit strange - AFAIK is should be reading 256000 on a 2Mb connection. Although I can't see how that would have changed just in the last few days as no cable modem changes can be actioned due to the Harmony downtime.

Re: Change of service?

200000 upstream is correct for the current 2Mb NTL connection by the way.

When they sorted the 3Mb connection out, they went to a 200k upload for the 2Mb and 300k upload for the 3Mb (IIRC)

Re: Change of service?

You know, I'm not even sure what level I should have - all the changes and offers and I've lost track :spin: I'm pretty certain I'm on 10MB but I don't think I'm paying £35 :erm: All too confusing for me. Maybe the slowness it just the normal occasional slowness due to the neighbours, only more pronounced. I dunno. Marge is going to have a look tomorrow for us.

She's a star. I mean figuratively, not literally, though they may be a marge constellation out there.

Yes. Something changing or something. I think it's to do with billing. It's important. Big. Is all this confusion normal for old age, or is it just me? :D

Its possible you were recieving 10Mb before but only being billed 2Mb as a result of an upgrade not going through correctly - it happens. NTL carry out audits on a regular basis to ensure that the customer is recieving the service that they are being billed for - if this is not the case then either the billing amount is changed or the service level changed, hence confusion!

What a shame they dont audit the quality of service thats being paid for. :(

It's me - early onset dementia. I am on 2MB. I blame the pans. Streaming definitely wasn't right - could just be the neighbours.

Even if your on 2Mb though, 48Kb/sec is still dire - it should be more like 256Kb/sec thoretical max, in practice with overheads more like 200Kb/sec, so there is still an issue. Have you tried a tracert to news.bbc.co.uk, www.mirror.ac.uk or other UK site? Post results back here.

greencreeper 11-04-2006 22:04

Re: Change of service?

Tracert is below. The connection here always has been intermittently poor but changing proxy seems to help. There are a couple of silver doofers sticking out the back of modem - the green box is about 1m from the house. A while back Ignition said something about noise. The neighbours are chavs. Caught a couple of them mating the other night. Think they might be related :erm:

Well, at least you've not been paying for a 10mb service all this time so thats at least one good thing. Hope things settle down especially with the neighbours :erm:

I take your point about the pans though, I went out before to the shop in my pj's, won't be long before I don't even realise :erm: See you in the nursing home but don't go wearing my teeth please :D :D

They'd probably stick me in one of your dresses :erm: :D

Re: Change of service?

It's still crap. Just tried watching a few classic snooker clips and I hear the balls potting before I see them potted :spin: Spend half the time looking at "communicating". Just a joke. Changing proxies makes no difference. Streaming radio is awful - keeps cutting out and then sounds like the orchestra are in the bath. Have to close the player and start again.
What's the point, other than to make money a la Dyson, in offering fast broadband if you can't use it
