download 120GB in the last month... i read somewhere that 70GB was the cap.

what I am trying to ask here is, have anyone been charged for going over or what has happened.... nothing?

:erm:

Will really depend if you hit that sort of rate month on month, and the network bods are struggling to maintain a "reasonable" level of service for the other customers in your region. If that is the case you may be contacted by ntl to advise of the problem with advice then on how to limit your monthly usage. Exceed it again and you could find your speed reduces, as far as I remember.

I believe though it is rare.

Re: NTL Download CAP's ?

I wouldnt worry at all, even with poor service in the region they probably wont take action.

Re: NTL Download CAP's ?

Depends what connection you have, 1MB & 2MB are unlimited, 10MB has a 75GB cap which isn't strict so they won't mind if once every few months you go over ...

Re: NTL Download CAP's ?

If all the talk and rumour about 10mb going unlimited (which has gone quiet I see) soon then it really won't matter at all I'd guess.

Re: NTL Download CAP's ?

Interesting issue, I play *UnReaL* Tournament 2004 every day for as long as twelve hours at once, with break in between, however calculating the amount of bandwith going through each second, on average and calulating each minutes usage, then going onto each hour - followed by how many hours played.

Gives a total of just over 5Gb a day, timings that by lets say 30 days is a whopping total, so *HOW* does one get around this problem?, I need 10mb unlimited :(

I hope NTL are reading these forum threads and taking notice.

Paying £34.99 is fair enough to me, but the 75Gb useage doesn't help with what I've said.

Heard nothing so far?

Should I panick?, its never happened to me before, when I was with Nildram and their 50Gb caps, lets hope for the best.

By the way guys, this is excluding normal useage such as browsing websites (e.g. Cable Forum, the inquirer.com, theregister.co.uk, channel4.com/sport/football_italia and all sorts), gosh the list goes on and on!

I think I'm a typical user, expect the only difference is bandwith is used nearly all the time due to connections to the game server and things

BTW - If NTL UNlimited was to come out soon, I don't think we should be paying anymore then we do now for 10mB... just a thought!

Why do you need 10MBit for gaming? 2MBit would do fine...

Re: NTL Download CAP's ?

You may be lucky and Telewest 10MB may be in your area, its the same price as NTL, but its unlimited:

www.telewest.co.uk

Re: NTL Download CAP's ?

If his street is NTL cabled he will not be getting Telewest any time soon. Besides, they are technically the same company now anyway.

Re: NTL Download CAP's ?

I've been getting high pings with the 2mb connectiln, this 10mb NTL has been going great, with very low pings, which as you know is vital to gameplay experience!

I hate lagging, but the NTL 10mb has been making my day since joining NTL on the 9th on January 2006!

Re: NTL Download CAP's ?

2MBit - > 10MBit will make absolutely no difference in Unreal whatsoever. If you are seeing a difference, it's related to something else entirely.

Re: NTL Download CAP's ?

I've been with Nildram 2mb and Pipex 2mb, they where very bad, when I say bad I mean bad for gaming, surfing the internet was brilliant, I went to NTL 1mb then 3mb I think it was, that was just as bad for some reason.

Now having said that the 10mb service is making my life a whole lot easier, I just appreciate that this is happening, I wouldn't have a care in the world if it cost for £34.99 or £99.99, I'd pay for it if I got a quality service.

It could make a difference if his 2mb line was utilised on other tasks whilst gaming and got saturated, a 10mbit line is harder to saturate.

Re: NTL Download CAP's ?

Whilst the games are playing over the Internet I've ran a few speed tests from adslguide.org, I seem to get 8000kb/s+ Download and 450kb/s+ Upload, its quite weird, unless theres something I have no knowledge of?

Ahh but dont forget about the upstream, 200kps on 2mbit vs 512kps on 10mbit.

Re: NTL Download CAP's ?

Upgrading from 2Mbit to 10Mbit made no difference to my gaming experience. Also the pings were just the same, around 20-30 on average to a UK server.

do you play BF2?

just asking because we are on 2mbit ntl and my bro moans like crazy thats it lags whenever i go online, even if all i do is open a webpage (cableforum) for example :Yikes:

UnReaL 08-04-2006 22:07

Re: NTL Download CAP's ?

Exactly dragon, that was exactly what I used to do - minus the moaning, I used get really bad lag spikes, although I still have doubts over the upload issue, because during gameplay I used to press Alt + Tab (sends you back to windows whilst game is running). Ran speed tests and still I got full upload speed and download speed its like the game wasn't getting affected (like playing through the LAN).

I've played alot of BF2 with it yes on an Athlon XP3200 1.5 gig of pc3200 ram but did play fine with 1gig too. Ati 9800pro all settings to medium and at 1280x1024. And as i've said pings are perfect for me.

Maybe i'm just lucky where i live with my NTL connection as i've always been able to max out my speed anytime of the day.

must be the way i open wepages then forgot that i do tend to run firefox with fasterfox set to open a fair few connection using pipelineing :dunce:

thats probably what kills his ping.

Re: NTL Download CAP's ?

True my meaning was if he was just playing the game instead of BitTorrenting at the same time ;)

UnReaL 08-04-2006 23:32

Re: NTL Download CAP's ?

lol, if that was aimed at me - I don't bit-torrent at all, never have, never will. I play games and browse the internet, bittorrent is out of the question!

Re: NTL Download CAP's ?

css i get no lag at all, some non-europeon servers i will get a high pings (130-300) and the odd lag-spike... but uk/euro servers i get pings 5-80... i get 10+ on a particular server runs nice.

I used to get a bad bf2 gameplay with my old system (P4 2.8/P4P800SE/1GB/, especially with a old linksys befsr51 router.

I have now upgraded my router to a WRT54GSV4 and also got a 939 system running with 2GB of ram. (amd3700/a8n-sli/kingston 4x512MB/7800GT)

BF2 is now running sweet on high settings, i blame my hardware for all the lag i used to get, but this might not be the case with everyone else.

Dragon, be interested to know what your brother's setup is (pc, router make etc)

12 hours a day

AND you have time to do "other" things on the Internet. !!!

I would not class you as a typcial user, unless there are those here who are going to admit to the same level of online game time ;)

i spend about 3-8hrs daily playing games, sad maybe but fun. lol

Re: NTL Download CAP's ?

Although the 75Gb Caps are a worry, not really bothered what NTL think as they don't seem to pay attention to those who actually have a legitament cause as to why they use the bandwith soo much.

With the likes of Telewest - there terms of use policy states that after two hours of continuous useage - they reserve the right to deny bandwith to a user. They do not state how much bandwith, as they've said continuous useage, that isn't fair either.

I could have been playing for three hours, breaking a few records, only to have myself disconnected from the Internet, because I'm playing a multiplayer internet game that Telewest think is eating up their bandwith, however, they are the ones eating up my wallet, my money.
