The Grand National

Who's going to win then?

I've a £1 on the Irish National winner - sweepstake at work. Also put £4 each way on it.

It takes time?

They're all here: http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/othe...ng/4849444.stm

Mine is "NUMBERSIXVALVERDE", which I can't even pronounce but it's tipped 1st or 2nd.

Guess which horse won? :D :hyper: :D

£4 at 12/1 and £4 at 1/4 odds (which I think is 3/1), plus the sweepstake. I can't get over it - I never win anything.

Re: The Grand National

I was a bit fed up at first - would have been better betting on a tin of corned beef. Right at the back - commentators not even mentioning it. My mum asked it was still running  Then gradually the commentators started mentioning it more and I thought, "Hang on a mo - it's making a bit of an effort". Then it's in 3rd place and I'm thinking, "Cooo - few quid if it finishes. Better than nothing. Liable to break a leg at the last fence knowing my luck, though". Then it's neck and neck with hedgehunter and it jumps the last fence much better. And it just goes - couple of horse lengths ahead! The old corned beef is going to win. Was on the edge of the sofa. All terribly sad and working class :D

Well, I backed Clan Royal and Hedge Hunter to win, and then did 'numbersix...' and Nil Desperandum each way, so I got 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th (though only got anything for 1st and 4th) -so won about 40 quid, which wasn't bad.. which put me about £22 quid up...

Guess what!!! I won as well! The GF picked hosres for herself me and her dad - and she's gutted that mine came romping home the winner...

£78 - so thats two weeks running now - last week £80 on Oxford wining the boat race and now the gee gee's! Whats next week..... :D

Suppose I'll have to take the GF out for dinner one night....Maccy D's here we come!!!

All the right horses, not necessarily the right order :D My mate, if he was still here, would have bet on the exact order - picked 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th. More cash that way. I think they call it an accumalator :erm:

Steady now - don't spend all the winnings :D

Come to think of it, if you get Park Lane and Mayfair, you'll be well sorted.

I picked the winner out in the sweepstake at work - totally random, pick a bit of paper out of a plastic cup. I knew nothing about the horses running. Nippped onto the BBC website and saw that it was a decent horse - won the Irish National. Not an old nag with lead shoes. Quite a few tipsters tipping it. So I thought it must be a sign from Him upstairs - just not like me to have luck - and put £4 ew on it when I got home.

Re: The Grand National

NumberSix is running again - more weight this time, but the jockey is saying this doesn't matter due to the length by which it won last time. That said, no horse has won twice in a row since Red Rum... I might have a few quid each way. The Irish horses are supposed to be favoured. Oh and there's HedgeHunter running.

SatelliteTVTalk 11-04-2007 12:16

Re: The Grand National

I like Joe's Edge -

he's a quality horse, won a big race at Cheltenham at massive odds and has been bred specifically for the Grand National...

Odds on him aren't great though... But if you're going to get on him, get on him now as i suggest they'll only keep falling...

And thus ends the Satellitetvtalk.info betting tips for the day - heh heh

Acathla 13-04-2007 12:05

Re: The Grand National

My Tips for some good betting is:

NumberSixValVerde - A good each way bet but with low odds it doesn't seem worth it!

Liberthine - Female horse, pregnant, amateur jockey who has won 3 from 5 runs round the fences at Aintree. Need I say more! Fantastic story - odds of around 25/1 (can get 33/1). My tip to win the Grand National!! (If there is any doubt it's over Stamina) :(

I can't remember which horse she said, and can't find it, but if we can, its gotta be worth £1 for a laff surely.

I believe Red Rum's trainer's son (if that makes any sense!) trains another one in the race. I bet its that horse.

Donald McCain trains 'Idle Talk' which has a good chance as far as I think.

Re: The Grand National

My money is on Idle Talk, Mr Tink thinks Dun Doire stands a good chance. IMHO this is a race that could be won by any of the horses, there are always so many fallers, and loose horses that get in the way of the contenders. Good luck everyone, hope you win!

Joe's Edge looks favourite - odds have fallen. With this warm weather, the ground is likely to be firm. I picked a couple of horses at work - Jack High and Simon. Couple of old nags

Point Barrow 11.00
Hedgehunter 12.00
Mckelvey 15.00
Numbersixvalver 15.00
Dun Doire 17.00
Idle Talk 19.00
Billyvoddan 19.00

not 'banned' here, and I'm not against steeplechase, per se, but I do think this particular race is actually too cruel to the horses & too dangerous for the jockeys...

- just my opinion, though, not implied criticism, like Jules said, good luck to those having a flutter :tu:

Personally, I'm in two minds about it. I share your sentiments, but I also find the 15 minutes of carnage that the National is a fascinating spectacle.

I don't disagree, danielf, but I also think there are a few too many runners, some fences might be just a bit easier if there wasn't such a crowd at each one - my objection towards it, is that the jockeys choose to do the race, the horses don't :)

True, but it's the horses that decide they won't attempt the fence, and send the jockeys flying....

As I said, I'm in two minds about it. Part of me says its just wrong. However, that is precisely why I watch it (I'm not interested in horse racing at all). It's like watching Formula 1 with guaranteed crashes :disturbd:

Also a friend has a 'really good feeling' :erm: about a horse named Gallant Approach and the last time he had he had such a feeling Royal Athlete romped home at 50-1, mind you this nag is out at 100-1 so it a long shot to say the least :disturbd:
