cant connect
 

hi this is my first time posting here , i have a small problem.
All i seem to be able to do is browse the internet i cant connect to MSN, mIRC,skype, play games nor get my email. Was ok till about 10mins ago then it all just dropped. Seems very strange normally if my inet goes the whole lot goes including browsing. No planned maintenance for my area either.

I have tried resetting the modem and router but still no joy :(

have just done a winmtr trace and 6 ips and all are stopping at win-bb-b-so-300-0.inet.ntl.com
after that "No response from host"

Tried a different proxy? Could be an issue with the proxy you are currently using.

A proxy would only affect connections on port 80, so doesn't seem like it would be that.

I presume you have rebooted the cable modem?

Are you using a router? if so, have you tried connecting without?

Could be a problem with DNS- have you got DNS servers specified or set to obtain automatically??

yep rebooted the modem and pc's tried connecting direct to the modem rather than through the router... rebooted the router... phoned NTL and they have no idea what it is ... i have done tracert and it stops at win-bb-b-so-300-0.inet.ntl.com (hop 6) doesnt matter that ip i try ALL stop at the same place, so it seems something is a bit of a miss at their end

engineers have been informed and im in Basingstoke too... i suggest that anyone else from Basingstoke also phones them maybe they might get it sorted quicker as im sure they think its just me :P

oh and DNS is set to auto

just happened to be passing here.

currently in the Bracknell area Web browsing FINE.

anything else - Nope.
never any issues before somones unplugged something :)

not a dns issue as i cant connect via a ftp either.

Managed to login via e-messenger so it must be a port problem?
My gamespy connects but wont load up games (like it did when i had the port blocked)

I am also from Basingstoke, and am having the same problems

Spoke to some forgeign guy in some foreign country no doubt, and he says the problem is known, and has been escalated.

He said, wait a few hours.... Damn, and I really wanted a game of Call of Duty 2 aswell!!!!!

i called up - expected the welsh chaps as normal no such luck tried to make them understand my postcode and talked through some issues yes i had restarted my modem yes i had turned it off for an hour or so just to make sure i know im not alone got my brother and3 mates on ntl all reporting same fault and they live in same town.

Did some testing and it seems they either blocked a massive IP range or a port somewhere. Heres a quick guide on how to gain your access back VIA proxy servers for the duration of the downtime

Load IE/Mozzila or what ever you use

Go into tools/options

Find you connections tab

In IE goto LAN setting / Mozzila users will find the proxy server at the mid point of the window (manual proxy server)

Enable proxy server usage (check use for all ports in mozilla)

Use the address : 203.212.223.143 port : 80

This should get you back online and functional for the duration of this cock up

downloading works - web browsing works.

msn p2p software webcame software ftp software team speak online games etc etc will not with our without a different proxy..im online its how i can post here ;)

just hit 23:30 and guess what ? still cant connect, its really starting to get on my nerves:mad: ah well im just gonna grab another beer and watch a movie, hoping it will be back up in like 2hrs or so , doubt it tho :sleep:

What I posted will allow you to use log-in services, such as MSN, AIM, e-bay, ebuyer etc.

For MSN and the like just add the same proxy server as above to the list in options.

Guess what it works now, after 10 mins waiting for Broadband tech support to answer, then when its my turn , getting cut off.

Yeh, i think its certain ports which have been somehow blocked.

Now 2 of my friends have this problem, and i live oppisite one of them.

Me = cpc1-neat2-0-0-cust241.swan.cable.ntl.com (82.11.xxx.xxx)

Them = cpc2-neat2-0-0-cust241.swan.cable.ntl.com (??????)

I noticed that on IRC last night. (NoName script has some nice features :P)

I'm thinking connection to different servers?

and the only servers coming up in their server lists (for steam) are NL, DK and FR servers.

It's no good posting your hostname and then xing out your IP, all I need to do is a reverse DNS lookup!

Well, my ip no real point because everything works for me and i don't know my friends IP's i only manged to remember that they were on cpc2. Apprently eveyrthing is back up, i don't know if its working for them yet, but i will check later and let you know :)
