Connection to BBC/Google etc?

About 10 minutes ago I lost connection to the main news areas of BBC and the google.com site, this was just after messenger started to give me errors too - most other sites work, but are slow - anyone else. I'm in Cambridge

Same here in Coventry this quite usual now with NTL where you only get half the web and pages that take nearly a minute to download sometimes. ADSL here we come. ;)

Similar here (Teesside).
BBC news site went off, other sites too. Some sites work, e.g. Channel4 site but some banners on the page won't display.
Email ok.
No newsgroups
Changed to a different proxy (cardiff) and bbc site works. Still no newsgroups.

Yep, I'm in Reading and Yahoo is playing up. It tends to load the text and struggles with the pictures. I rang tech help when it last happened and they had hundreds of people of in a phone queue and an automated message so I'm sure they are well aware of it this time. Hopefully won't take long to put right.

Same here, BBC Google,Gamespot and many more are kaput or incredibly slow, different proxies give varying results, but all are rubbish.
Skype intermittantly down too, all looks foobared.

Just another day in paradise.

GuestUK 22-03-2006 17:59

Re: Connection to BBC/Google etc?

Same here, I was wondering if it was just me - turns out it's not

I still have BBC and Yahoo access, but both google.co.uk and google.com are dead.

I can ping www.google.com and it resolves and replies:

Pinging www.google.com [66.102.9.147] with 32 bytes of data:

Reply from 66.102.9.147: bytes=32 time=41ms TTL=244

But going to www.google.com or .co.uk gets nowhere.
However, going to http://66.102.9.147 works

Rather odd - it was working fine about 15 minutes ago

[Edit]As of posting, www.google.com is back up again here, now. .co.uk still down[/Edit]
[Edit2] As of adding that edit, .co.uk now works. Interesting - all up here and working again now, although still a little confused[/Edit2]

Possibly, I wonder. Are the symptoms we are seeing now the same?
Like uno says though, could be a knacked or partially knacked dns.

I admit my knowledge of DDOS attacks is rather limited, but would not a DDOS affect all service, not just select websites, as appeared to be the case? That would be unless the DDOS was on the side of Google/bbc/yahoo but I'm pretty sure that wasn't the case here.

If you can resolve the IP address, but not the domain name, it points very much towards NTL's 'infamous' DNS servers.

Re: Connection to BBC/Google etc?

And in Harrogate/Knaresborough

This doesn't seem like a DDoS, more like a knackered DNS server due to the focused nature of the problem i.e. popular sites such as Google, Yahoo & the BBC.

Last time this happened I rang India (or NTL as it is otherwise known) and was told "no problems sir, reboot your stb".

I really hate NTL, if we could recieve Terristrial signals or were allowed to put a Sky dish up (building is listed and next to a cliff face) then I would drop NTL like David Seaman.

I hope this gets sorted soon and they offer a proper explanation.

Cheers
D

I have just changed my DNS option on my router from 'Automatic from ISP' to 212.104.130.9. And instantly, everything that did not work, now works. I changed it back just to confirm. And again Adobe.com/google/yahoo partially or fully fail to load.

You might want to think about that a bit more. It's exactly the same as last time, google and bbc. If it was a network problem all sites would be the same. The cause is almost certainly the same (and as I already said, I know other dns services are under attack today).

That's down to spyware/adware on your PC which is probably taking over your browser when you would normally get Page Cannot Be Displayed, and redirecting you to the site you're seeing.

Craig_e 22-03-2006 18:50

Re: Connection to BBC/Google etc?

This is all becoming a bit of a joke now. I accept that these things do occasionally happen but this is getting fairly frequent now.

You would hope that some of the money we shell out every month actually goes on upgrading the infrastructure instead of the 'quick fix' method NTL seem to be using at the moment.

It would be interesting to find out what the availabilty has been in the last 12 months..............I would be suprised if its even in the 90's

Ok I just called India. Not expecting them to fix it BUT it would seem there is a temporary solution.

Now browse, and EVERYTHING works again.

Still nothing on the status page (which is still working currently, hardly anything else is now - even this site takes minutes to load now).
I guess NTL will ignore us all as usual, looks like they are the target of an attack like last time, seems not to have affected any other ISP's (nothing on adslguide forum when I can load it).
NTL really need to get a handle on their crappy network, seems they ****ed off the wrong people somewhere along the line -funny how its always them thats attacked...

Can anybody here get on to www.microsoft.com ?

No

However, I'm greatful to get anything, as my modem keeps dropping off the network. Having spent 45 minutes on phone to India on Monday (hmm, that would have been a nice priced call at 0871 rates) I 'allegedly' have an engineer booked for modem swapout. I'll not hold my breath.

Wonder if this DNS issue will have been fixed by then? Would be a good excuse not to fix my modem's problem

Cannot access microsoft at all nor google, gmail, ati and a few others to name a few. I had trouble with this site earlier. I am in Rutherglen G73 area. All was fine this afternoon until about 6pm. :(

What a load of rubbish this service is. NTL was fine until recently - now it's useless. We'll wait for the excuses about the imaginary hackers.

Right, got that off my chest. I'll forgive this occasion, but the next time they can stuff their 12 month contract, and hello BT.

Well, I've just come back from a day out to find I have a new IP address. Looks like something is cocking up.

Oh and I can't get AVG to update. Not another DDOS attack?

Hi,

Same probs here in NG17. Same as happened a week or two ago. Some sites ok but alot don't load. I must admit it does seem to be getting worse.

I will do my best never to ring the Indian call centre again as they have a standard answer - your pc,spyware, virus. It's never their fault!!

So long as it works as it is, I LOVE YOU NTL...
