Grrrrrr. Need some help or info plz
Helllooooooo,
I'm in Runcorn in Cheshire and my Net has been dreadfully slow over the last 4 or 5 days. It's happened once before but only for a short period and seemed to clear up pretty quickly. Now, maybe i'm jus very lucky, but i've never really had any troubles with NTL at all and have always been happy with the service. But recently it's reeeeally slow. I'm on 600k service. I did a speed test on something and i think it said about normal for d/l (60-70kb/s) , but upstream was awful, about 1kb/s i think. Now, i did have a virus recently on the PC but thats been eradicated, so i guess i just wanna know if there are any known problems in my area and if so , is there anythin i can do to help my connection. Its weird cuz online games seem,,,, mmmm, ok. Not too much difference, but programs like Teamspeak are no use cuz my transmissions are garbled...obviously cuz that uses upstream i guess. (i'm a bit of a noob ) Cheers |
Re: Grrrrrr. Need some help or info plz
do you know how to post tracerts or pings ???????????? , that will be a start , or can you follow this link and post back the results http://homepage.ntlworld.com/robin.d...speedtest.html :)
oh btw welcome to the site :) |
Re: Grrrrrr. Need some help or info plz
Hi, & Welcome to nthw.
Are you using a specified proxy in Internet Explorer? (& if so-which one?) Might be worth changing the proxy if you are using one: http://homepage.ntlworld.com/robin.d...trancache.html Also-do you have any p2p apps running that may be saturating your uploads? |
Re: Grrrrrr. Need some help or info plz
lol, takin me about 20-30 seconds after i click post reply until i can actually type.
Mon, 24 Nov 2003 14:06:51 UTC 1st 128K took 1828 ms = 71702 Bytes/sec = approx 597 kbits/sec 2nd 128K took 1828 ms = 71702 Bytes/sec = approx 597 kbits/sec 3rd 128K took 1781 ms = 73595 Bytes/sec = approx 612 kbits/sec 4th 128K took 1813 ms = 72296 Bytes/sec = approx 602 kbits/sec No proxies. No p2p programs at all on the PC thanks for quick response guys, apreciate it |
Re: Grrrrrr. Need some help or info plz
well that is on the mark :)
how about tracerts :) |
Re: Grrrrrr. Need some help or info plz
jeez, takin me ages to post.
Erm, tracerts :S :S :S lol, not sure what one is or how to do one i'm afraid. Yer, i mean , downloadin from sites, like downloading custom maps for online games , i'm gettin normal speed, 60-70 kb/s. But general browsing and programs that need bandwidth, or upstream is just poor. Ermmmmmm....yer , tracerts. I can do anythin with guidance :P |
Re: Grrrrrr. Need some help or info plz
It sounds more like a proxy issue to me-follow the link I gave you & change your proxy & see if that improves your browsing.
|
Re: Grrrrrr. Need some help or info plz
k, i'll try that now.
I'm guessin that i jus choose one of the closest to me ??? That would be a manchester one |

Re: Grrrrrr. Need some help or info plz
Guys,
Thank you so much. I changed to a nottingham proxy. It's the first one i have tried. It is certainly running a hell of a lot faster. Certainly not what it is capable of but i am really pleased. I guess theres no harm in trying several of them and seeing if there is any improvement. But thanks for your quick rsponses and advice. :) :) :) |
Re: Grrrrrr. Need some help or info plz
neil wins , ho hum :p :p :p :p
|
Re: Grrrrrr. Need some help or info plz
Hmmmmmmm,
Yer, browsing is certainly better. Upstream is still a problem tho i think. I'm still getttin 1-4 kb/s. Now, does changin the proxy affect this at all ? Cuz i think the programs like teamspeak are still gona be mashed :S |

Do you have a SACM (Stand Alone Cable Modem) or do you get BB via your STB (Set Top Box)? |
Re: Grrrrrr. Need some help or info plz

it should still be better than what he is getting though ;) |
Re: Grrrrrr. Need some help or info plz
Stand alone modem.
btw, that was 1-4 kb/s and not 14kb/s , lol. Jus to avoid confusion. |
Re: Grrrrrr. Need some help or info plz
this is the very reason I like zone alarm. it tells you whats using an outbound connection. but if you have not got it I would first suggest, get it ;) or do a control alt delete bring up task manager and make sure nothing is running that could use your upload bandwidth. particuly as you said you had a virus.
or trace route, from a dos prompt tracert www.ntlworld.com |
Re: Grrrrrr. Need some help or info plz
Or you could download a trial version of Dumeter from www.dumeter.com
|
Re: Grrrrrr. Need some help or info plz
i got that du meter and when the pc is idle, there is only about 0.1kb/sec upstream and downstream. So it doesnt seem that anythin is usin the connection in the background.
Cant see anythin out of the ordinary in task manager processes etc. I think i did a tracert correctly, ..... i'm guessin thats bad :S |
Re: Grrrrrr. Need some help or info plz
It's not horrendous (I've seen worse), but you will need to contact ntl Tech Support on 0800 052 2000-I would suspect that (like most people in your area) you are on an oversubscribed UBR-& only level 2 techs can change that from memory.
|
Re: Grrrrrr. Need some help or info plz
:(
Ok, well thanks again for all ur help today guys. Muchos apreciatos. One more thing tho. When i call them..... erm....what do i say ? lol. Bit of a daft question but how do i describe whats wrong and what i would like done ? ta |

It may not be level 2 techs that can change upstream paths, but I know it can be done. With regards to Docsdiag-here's a link to some info that can also show you how congested your upstream path is (or isn't!) http://homepage.ntlworld.com/robin.d...ps/signal.html Also-what type of modem do you have? |
Re: Grrrrrr. Need some help or info plz
I thought docsdiag only worked on stand alone modems and not with stb. this is assuming jim in runcorn is using the stb.

Re: Grrrrrr. Need some help or info plz

Re: Grrrrrr. Need some help or info plz

Thanks all.
As i say i've generally never had any problems at all with NTL and was just gonna bear this out. But its probably gettin to nearly a week that the conenctions been dodgy so yep, anythin that can possibly be done, that would be most apreciated :) |

I can confirm I'm in touch with Jim now and hopefully we'll have a resolution to this shortly.

He's not on an oversubscribed uBR, I think he has HFC problems on the return path. Notice that pings to uBR stayed low, and routers in between may not rate pings as priority traffic. For uBR to be so oversubscribed it's dropping packets there's no chance of a steady 3 pings @ 14ms to ntlworld. Would like to see a large number of pings to ntlworld.com or similar, use ping www.ntlworld.com -t and let it run for a bit without any action on the line, then see what happens. IIRC re: Swansea there are Level 1 to Level 3 techs, none of the people in Swansea can change upstream IDs at all, requires privileged access to uBRs, Swansea only use Blue tools as far as I know. |
Re: Grrrrrr. Need some help or info plz
Hi
There will be some work done on the Runcorn Ubr's tonight due to some problems there. It would be interesting to see what the trace routes look like in the morning. Regards Bill |
Re: Grrrrrr. Need some help or info plz
Thanks Bill, I'll bear that in mind tomorrow when I look into this.
|
Re: Grrrrrr. Need some help or info plz
Being a confounded lunatic I'm VPN'd into work on the first day of my week off and can confirm my tools show no upstream congestion anywhere in Runcorn, (yes, we actually have perfectly good areas). I'd therefore suspect a local HFC issue.
Switching upstreams is something only high-level network techs (RF or IP) can do. Hi, Bill, how's it going? |
