contact lenses

how old do you have to be for contact lenses? can you get them under 16?

LemonyBrainAid 07-03-2006 21:30

Re: contact lenses

I believe you can - I think thirteen/fourteen may be the minimum age though.

Re: contact lenses

Personally I'd not wear them because they're in contact with your eye, which normally isn't designed to be in contact with things because it has no blood supply so needs to get oxygen, moisture etc from contact - which even permeable lenses inhibit to some degree. (Plus, I'd say 13 was a tad too young)

they might be for cosmetic or appearance reasons tho

I have worn soft contact lenses for playing squash for over 20 years, and 40 years ago I used to wear hard contact lenses for football. I am not a fan of long wear, or monthly disposable. I like a clean fresh daily wear, set of lenses. You do need to be very careful about cleanliness when using them, get regular check ups etc. I have a monthly direct debit contract, which includes all lenses, full annual eye test/check up and attention free of charge if evey I need it.

That is very true, though the idea still goes against my way of thinking - as for sport, I normally just take glasses etc off when playing footy etc, though I used to be able to read monitors etc with glasses off, if I was gonna take these off now i'd have to do something else for a while before I was going to read the screen again (though I can see it first thing when I've been asleep) - best thing about these is the anti-glare, as I use a CRT at work it helps.

Personally, I still wouldn't wear contacts though.

Appearance reasons? Please elaborate?

you might have reason to wear them due to eyes being different colours from each other etc - for interviews etc ;)

And in reality, who's going to judge you on whether one eye looks different from the other at an interview? Personally, I couldn't care about someone's appearance if it didn't affect their ability to do their job - and I don't really care about attitudes to glasses, etc either. It's all stereotypical.

I don't think many opticians will prescribe them at 13. Mine would only let me have them when I got to 16.

Been wearing soft lenses since then (I'm nearly 25) with no issues what to ever, well apart from being allergic to the preservatives in all-in-one solutions. Plenty of other solutions to choose from though.

Started on Monthly disposable ones then I moved onto the wonderful continuous wear ones and I'm currently wearing daily disposables.

Can't imagine leaving the house with my glasses on, gives me the creeps just thinking about it!

I suppose it depended on whether they were good enough... if they adhered to the dress code...

As I said, I don't care about appearance, chav-baiting is OK but some chavs are OK, never judge a book by its cover.

As for the contacts- you're 25 so that explains it- it's not long enough to damage eyesight but I'd be surprised if long-term use of contacts didn't. I'll stick with the "4-eyes" look but it's OK, I don't look like Harry Potter!

Well I'd just not wear them - my eyesight is good enough. :)

Contacts just seem a lot of hassle to me. I prefer glasses. I wear them playing footie and squash as well...

Re: contact lenses

I would hate to have to go back to glasses for squash. you miss things in your peripheral vision with glasses, and even plastic lenses steam up on cold courts at this time of year.

No, I haven't. Still, glasses suit me fine (apart from them fogging up when cycling in the rain). The 'intellectual look' is good for work as well ;)

I must be playing warm courts then :) Plus, my lenses aren't very strong, so I don't think peripheral vision is affected much.

Re: contact lenses

Id recommend anyone to go and get a free trial from your local optician, its amazing the ammount of difference they make. And at the end of the day, you aren't losing anything if you don't get on with them.

Angua 08-03-2006 15:21

Re: contact lenses

A former colleagues grandson got them as his eyesight was so bad that glasses were unable to cope. Lens technology has moved on in 25 years so I would check with the optician, they may also not be available on the NHS unlike your glasses which will be.

If you receive a discount on glasses you can use the same voucher towards contacts. :)

Re: contact lenses

I have worn glasses for years and started wearing contacts about 3 years ago. I personally think contacts are better than my glasses as it makes sports and other activities easier. I still only wear them for a few days a week and when going out at night.

Don't tend to wear at work as the air con dries them out too quick.

Contacts these days are great cause they are so soft you really don't notice they are there once you put them in.

I wear glasses for driving, and to be honest I hate wearing them. Glasses are something I have never got on with, I think the main thing that put me off was the frames always in the way when I used to play keyboards in my younger days.

These days I wear soft daily disposable contact lenses for a night out on the town, I probably use about 4-5 pairs a month at most. I guess they are in for around 4-6 hours max, I wouldn't consider wearing them on a regular basis for long periods though.
