NTL Internet access problems - 07 Mar 2006

Getting lots of server not found messages and unable to access NTL status page. I have tried another proxy and that's not working at all.

I'm in DN16 area.

Meant to also say it has taken about ten goes to get access to this site and pictures are not loading here or elswhere on the net.

Re: Is there a problem on NTL Internet access?

I'll go and do something useful, things will be working again tomorrow, I hope.

Some sites seem to be working to some extent once again, but as looselipsuk says pictures not loading.

Same problem in Nottingham NG11.

It seems to have been fine most of the day but has just started acting up. I see from the status page that we were due some upgrades today, but they should have finished ages ago at 6am this morning.

yeah Byron on Firefox I get time outs and if I ping it on the google.com ip address then its alright (ip of google is 66.102.9.99)

Jingle I can get news.bbc.co.uk up but no pics or anything and slow as hell

Re: Is there a problem on NTL Internet access?

Similar problems here south of Nottingham. Can get to some sites. Have tried different proxies to no avail. Cannot even ping some well known sites. I can connect to a site within the ntl network OK, so it would seem to be a peering issue.

ntl DNS servers?

am i right in thinking NTL's dns servers for broadband are 194.168.4.100 and 194.168.4.101

the router gives its own ip as the DNS server when left for dhcp and although this does work (it probably just forwards the request to the ntl server) i want to specify the right dns to use in my computers networking config

i want to find out if thats why if i try to open about 3 tabs at once it seems to cause an issue where i then cannot browse till i either specify a proxy or reset the router :Yikes:

Been having problems in NG17 here as well.

Yup, same here (nr. Manchester)...

It appears anything it can load from a cache works (google - but perhaps only common searches), but anything secure or like webmail won't work at all.

im not saying the NTL dns servers are a problem, im pretty sure that this issue is the router here as when i try to open about 3 sites at once on my laptop it seems to upset it and cause it to not route traffic correctly on port 80.

I want to see if specifying the DNS server resolves the problem as the DHCP on the router is issueing its own IP as the DHCP server so my computer is first asking the router to do the DNS lookup rather than the DNS servers.

I don't want my computer to do that i want to to send the dns request to the DNS server rather then first trying to ask the router to do the dns lookup.

i got the first IP 194.168.4.100 from the routers status page but it doesn't list a secondary DNS server so im guessing with the 194.168.4.101.

I am using nott-cache-1.server.ntli.net (I am usually on the baguley one) but it isn't much cop. Cable Forum loads up okay (thank god, or I'd be screaming at the PC by now thinking I was being Dos'd) but nothing much else.

I first realised something was wrong when Yahoo Mail gave me a right strange messed up password page. Then google borked. So...hmmm

Re: Is there a problem on NTL Internet access?

I think its dns, I've tried speaking to the tech support about it but they are useless. My findings:

C:\Documents and Settings\Dan>nslookup www.google.co.uk
Server: cache1.ntli.net
Address: 194.168.4.100
*** cache1.ntli.net can't find www.google.co.uk: Server failed

nslookup queries the DNS servers (nothing to do with the web caches) and this query appears to fail because ntl's DNS cache does not contain google.co.uk (which it should really).

I tore my hair out trying to explain this to the tech support, I hung up when they asked me to reboot for the 3rd time.

:(

If we could get terrestrial or sky where we live I would drop NTL in a heart beat.

I think it's an intermitent problem. Sometimes the DNS servers timeout, other times they supply spurious data.

Tech support say they are unaware of a problem with the servers.
