Re: Hasta La Vista boyo

I don't think he really doesn't know about Wales - to me it just looks like another example of "My America is so wonderful and great, by pretending not to have heard of other countries it'll perpetuate the idea that we don't know or care about other lands", but then again, I could be wrong and that's a discussion for another thread :D

A certain Mr William Clinton Esq used to come here regularly before he was more well know as he is a fan of Dylan Thomas, it's also rumoured he's been here since, too. Is that 'famous' enough for you 'boyo'??

Yes it is, but our Jezza has dual-citizenship which means he can profess loyalty to either nation, depending on how popular/unpopular america happens to be that week :D

However, please note that this is a measure of quantity, not quality. In terms of quality, and at a very rough guess, I'd say that 1 Canada equals about 0.5 of a wales. Has anyone got a better estimate? :D

PS For smaller countries, we in the UK often use the Isle of Wight as a measure of size. For extremely small countries, eg Liechtenstein, the Isle of Wight ferry might be a more suitable measurement of area.

I quote form the article in the link:

He was a rising name in bodybuilding when he was invited to the Mr Wales contest in 1967.

Pensioner Joan Thomas from Maesteg remembers sitting next to the Californian governor at the competition.

"He was 20 and I was 32," said Mrs Thomas.

So, most people who were around the last time a famous person visited Wales are now pensioners. :)

But it seems a bit half hearted. A bit of quick googling tells me that the licence should say Abertawe, not Swansea.

I was only half jesting here. On the odd occasion that I have visited Wales, I'm sure that some of the road signs were bilingual; Cardiff comes to mind.

PS On one of these occasions, a fellow passenger commented that there seemed to be a lot of Cross Keys (places or pubs I can't recall) in Wales. Was his attention (or even mind) wandering, or is it true?

Russ 24-11-2003 23:30

Re: Hasta La Vista boyo

Actually that's right, there are loads of pubs with that name, not sure about towns though, I only know of one.
