Extremely Slow in 'bromley' - proxy issues

I'm in South London, SE15. I believe this is known as the 'bromley exchange'

Since about 4 hours ago, web browsing has gone down the toilet speed wise.

Actually downloading files isn't bad at all. It just seems that all websites are just loading amazingly slow.

BTW I'm sure it's not my PC's problem

These guys seem to be having the same problems:

http://www.cableforum.co.uk/board/sh...ad.php?t=43917

Re: Extremely Slow in 'bromley'

I'm so glad it's not just me experiencing this!
I think it's only port 80 that's really slow. I can connect to web pages just fine on any other port, email works fine, as does FTP and SSH.

When i rang support they said nothing was wrong. Maybe i'll give them another ring.

Yeah Bromley area is slow as hell. I'm using another proxy and seems to be fine

Re: Extremely Slow in 'bromley'

Just on the phone to NTL now and they are aware of the problem. Apparently it's being esculated to their "fast management team" (whoever they are!).

They're trying to setup a proxy on my mac, but they don't know much about the mac os x operating system so it's not getting anywhere fast :D

Re: Extremely Slow in 'bromley'

yep getting the same thing here in Bromley

anyone know a good proxy to use ?

Re: Extremely Slow in 'bromley'

OK good to know that 'The A Team' are on it. I'll just have to grin and bear it as I'm not techy enough to know about proxy stuff.

Re: Extremely Slow in 'bromley'

This is the one NTL told me to use:

IP: 62.252.32.11
Port: 8080

To set it up for Firefox click on tools then options, then the general tab.
Click on Connection Settings.
Choose Manual Proxy Configuration
In the HTTP Proxy box type in the above IP and in the port box, the port number above.
Done, it should work.

You can do a similar thing with IE and with different IP's.

Re: Extremely Slow in 'bromley'

Fantastic - thanks sdjl.

No idea what I just did but it works. I guess I just return the settings later?

sdjl 03-03-2006 18:31

Re: Extremely Slow in 'bromley'

Yeah. I have a feeling it will be a case of disabling it and seeing if service has returned to normal and then re-enabling it if it hasn't.

Amazing! Thanks! I just popped in to see if the problem was general and there is a solution sitting there waiting for me.

If using FireFox, then the 'SwitchProxy' extension is handy to have - once set up changing proxies is a doddle :)

Re: Extremely Slow in 'bromley' - proxy issues

this is anoying, i dont want to have to keep bloody proxy jumping all the time! if ntl got their heads out their a$$ and done soemthing like BT then i would not have to keep changing proxys every so often.

This service for the past 3 days has been a joke, tech support is useless on this, they keep saying its your computer or something wrong your end, so i end up hanging up as i CBA to speak to them anymore.

Does anyone ever read this part of the forum?

have u tried to change your proxy ?

Re: Extremely Slow in 'bromley' - proxy issues

Why should i have to mess around to keep on defining poroxy servers?
if ntl done their jobs proper i would not have to
i had to define a proxy server to just get access to sourceforge as it appears i could not access it in bromley area, now i have to add a proxy server because ntl messed up the bromley exchange.
This service is a joke

sdjl 04-03-2006 10:52

Re: Extremely Slow in 'bromley' - proxy issues

The only way you're going to get it to work for the time being is to specify a proxy. Sure, NTL should do things right first time, but this isn't the case at the moment.

Setting a proxy takes less than two minutes.

neoapple 04-03-2006 11:12

Re: Extremely Slow in 'bromley' - proxy issues

yer but its anoying as everytime i go through my work i have to change proxy and same when i go round my mates. I should have to not change anything, as this is stupid, been 4 days and still no news from ntl. oh wait that would mean they would have to get up of the desk and move 3 meters to the com system that anounces this, god what has the world come to at ntl

Sometimes it's ok for a while , then it is slow regardless of poxy proxy settings.

I spent 10 minutes on 0845 trying to stir them into action, but had to hang up.
The geographical numbers at saynoto0870 dont get through.
And I dont want to pay 4.45p/min to complain about their slow service!

I'm gonna call CS/Sales....

Re: Extremely Slow in 'bromley' - proxy issues

Yesterday it was soooo slow that it was useless
Today it's ok but not as fast as usual.

I dont know about the proxy changing stuff but I agree with neoapple, why should we have to mess about trying to get it to work when we pay ntl £35 a month for which should be a service that works :td: ..rant over :D

IanUK 05-03-2006 20:43

Re: Extremely Slow in 'bromley' - proxy issues

NTL are not bothered about proxy issues, they know they are rubbish but we are stuck with them, the answer is always to swap to another one, they are not interested in fixing the underlying issue.

Proxies are so 1990's ;)

chocky909 05-03-2006 22:21

Re: Extremely Slow in 'bromley' - proxy issues

Well, the direct is glitchy to say the least. The proxy isn't the most stable connection I've experienced either. Anyone been offered any other suitable proxies? Or been given any actual news regards the problem?

lordy 06-03-2006 09:20

Re: Extremely Slow in 'bromley' - proxy issues

The thing is I dont think this is even a proxy problem.

Switching proxies for me has little effect. Sometimes speed is OK and sometimes it's pants, regardless of proxy. At the same time browsing speed drops I also have difficulty fetching text articles from nntp (Easynews).

When brosing picks up, so does nntp.

I've checked my wireless connecting and there is generally 0% packet loss when things are running OK.

I havent yet run a ping when things are going slow.

In any case I think I'll be getting my BT line installed and going ADSL once I go over T&Cs.

Retrovertigo 06-03-2006 09:22

Re: Extremely Slow in 'bromley' - proxy issues

A friend of mine had NTL installed on Friday but hasn't had a stable connection at all in this short time. He is in the Bromley area but as well as slow browsing he keeps losing his connection altogether.

He has tried changing his proxy settings but this only lasts a couple of minutes before once again he loses all net connection and can do nothing at all.

Any ideas if this is related to everyone else problems or if this is something else? He already had NTL Tv service so the engineer merely ran a cable plus connection to near his PC and left him with a SACM to connect himself. No testing no nothing.

Naturally he isn't very happy at all. He called customer services but was put through to an Indian sounding chap who he had to hang up on after several minutes as he literally couldn't understand a word he was saying. This may sound silly to do so, but my mate isn't technically minded, coupled with someone with a foreign accent - doesn't make for a good mix when trying to talk someone through something.

Re: Extremely Slow in 'bromley' - proxy issues

If it was just a case of swapping to a proxy I wouldn't care but now the proxy seems to be as unstable as the direct.

There's something gone wrong in the last few days and it's definately not fixed yet.

i've been using the Cardiff proxy that was posted a few days ago and that has been working fine for me

but as you said this IS a problem that NTL need to get resolved

nomon 06-03-2006 14:51

Re: Extremely Slow in 'bromley' - proxy issues

I have just been on the hotline to NTL and they have confirmed that the "slow browsing issue" still persists (despite the status page showing it as resolved).

Hope this will help some people trying to find the fault on their own computer / network :-)

Had slow browsing problems over last few days - tried Firefox SwitchProxy and found that things only got worse:

Removed extension and used manual proxy - all ok now ...

Re: Extremely Slow in 'bromley' - proxy issues

Yep - same today. I count 6 days (at least) of bad performance. This surely breaks some SLAs somewhere! We should be able to get some sort of compensation. Gonna call CS tomorrow.

Chrysalis 09-03-2006 01:02

Re: Extremely Slow in 'bromley' - proxy issues

what SLA? generally no such thing on a residental service.

Re: Extremely Slow in 'bromley' - proxy issues

My direct seems ok now. Is there any way of testing it? Or, should I say, what elements of a speed test would suggest that the problem is gone?

Everyone else OK?

Seems to be.

there has been a DDOS attack on the NTL DNS servers in the past few weeks that is causing all the slow browsing and pages not being displayed

I've been having problems this last week or so too. SE15 here. It seems to have improved a lot since yesterday I got my 2>4mb speed increase but some sites are still very stubborn to load. Still not worried at mo. But it was awful for a few days.

Im in Beckenham (BR3) and my 1mb has been painfully slow loading some sites in the past 2 weeks or so. It is particularly bad in the evenings (peak times). The last 2 days it has improved, but some sites are still really slow.

Bear in mind that if everyone switches to the same proxy, suddenly, it won't be so fast anymore.
