Sorry, but that thing is Ugly.

TBH, I think you'd be better with a decent mini hifi, if you have £250 to spare. If you want a wireless remote, you can get a non-apple branded one for about £15.

I think it should have had the ability to receive songs liek airport does. We wont know until we get reports on how this sounds

One other things thats bothering me about this.

Its been sold/marketed as an audiophile way of listening to music. So who is willing to spend that much on a speaker to listen to compressed MP3's?

Many audiophiles would spend that (and more) on one speaker out of two. I spent £250 on a pair of entry-level 'decent' speakers (nowhere near 'audiophile'). And like you say, they definitely would not use it to listen to mp3s.

Re: iPod Hifi

That looks awful.
I may as well go buy a speaker and paint it white and selotape my Ipod on to it, it will be the same.

Re: iPod Hifi

You would need to get it to play the ipod contents

I like this but its a no go until it can receive music wirelessly. All my music is either on my ipod or on computer

I have a couple of friends that have the Bose ipod thing. And to be honest i was amazed at the sound this little thing puts out. It is really pretty damn good. Expensive, but good. Review link

Trust me, MP3s are good enough for 'audiophile' sound if you have the right hardware, especially at 192kbps, but even at 128kbps.

I have an IASCA CD, and even though its at 128kbps, and a lot of the bass is cleared out, it still packs one hell of a punch on either of my brother's car audio systems. But you have to think my younger brother has 2 x 12" Kicker L7 Solo-barics and 800w RMS (not peak, RMS) Kicker amp. So you are talking about well over $1500-$2000+ with wiring and installation and that's excluding the headunit, but you get what you paid for.

I only had a 10" JL and a 350w RMS JL amp (I don't listen to sub-bass much, mostly rock), which cost me about $900 all told (included a custom fibreglass sub enclosure but minus headunit which I already had from xmas pressie). I used to listen to mp3s straight off my mp3 player via the auxilary port, and it hit comendably hard. The stock speakers were already good enough for mid and high-range. I was sad when the vehicle was sold and I had to sell the audio equiptment off.

So in short there's nothing stopping mp3s sounding great, but you'll have to dip in your pocket. If you go past an Apple shop, listen to the JL speakers with subwoofer with an Ipod (the big glass dome one with a hole in the top), turn it up and then say mp3s don't sound good. Hell, even the radio hit nicely on my little setup. Most music systems don't come with a proper subwoofer (i.e. that uses a crossover, which filters out anything other than bass frequencies), so MP3s do sound tinny.

I think you need to ask, what would an audiophile buy for playing songs off his ipod in the kitchen or bedroom? He already has his mega-expensive separates system in the lounge, but what about playing some music in the kitchen while cooking or washing the dishes? You don't put an expensive separates system in the kitchen, you put something compact in there. I think Apple is saying that if you are looking for something of that kind, the iPod HiFi is at the top of the range.

Re: iPod Hifi

Surely you cant use the term Hi-Fi in relation to a compressed format such as MP3 etc :)

Its not about the bass...but the detail contained in the higher frequency ranges...stick any compressed audio though a real house Hi-Fi and you hear whats missing compared to the original CD etc....

Ojk for a car and for portable....but not for the house :)

Depends. I doubt a true audiophile would bother with any compressed music system. It's not cheap, but I would think they would be more likely to use something like Yamaha's MusicCast Wireless Multi Room HiFi.

BTW, yes, I know that the Yamaha site talks about playing MP3s, but I have it on good authority this plays back WAV files as well.
