If he says it is not being generally distributed, then, the chances are it is not being generally distributed. It is possible that NTL have distributed a few of these boxes to certain users to see how well they work.

Also, everyone, can I remind you that just because the box has an SPDIF socket, it does not necessarily follow that NTL will enable it. The Pace 1000 boxes had Parallel and Serial ports that were never used, and the current Samsung has a USB socket that has never been used.l

I wonder if this box is capable of 10meg broadband (If it goes on general release) :D

That person may wish to remove the MAC address, Samsung serial number and Nagra IRD code from the picture of the back of the box - it makes them rather easy to trace...

I got one - Performs well. Optical output is cool for surround amps.

and yes - i do work for NTL, but these boxes are issued to local installers now, so expect to hear more about them soon.

It's only a 2 channel output through the SPDIF.

Re: new ntl samsung 2110 with digital output any one got one

Yes, very much so. The boxes are ntl's property and tampering with them in any way is against the Terms & Conditions of service.

And judging by the pictures of the front of the boxes (featuring a dBox and a 2100 with what appears to be a 'gold' card), I'd say whoever has this box is attempting to do something illegal.

An optical output make absolutely no difference as to whether it is a stereo or surround amp. If the programme is only being broadcast in stereo, it will only ever be stereo. The very most that you will get out of it right now (assuming you actually have one) is ProLogic - which you would also be able to get if you plugged in a standard stereo analogue photo cable.

The sound quality (using optical) from the surround effect channels seem to be clearer and more effective than using standard coax phono cables.

When I saw the thread title I thought NTL had finally caught up with the times and fitted DVI or HDMI connectors for LCD screens.

Then I woke up and realised you were all getting excited about a 1990s-era digital audio output. There's some weird kind of time-warp in NTL-Land.

Bwahaha. Glad I'm not still with NTL for my TV. Got Freeview instead, via Media Center through a DVI cable to an LCD screen. There's nothing to watch, but it's an excellent picture :)

Coax Phono Cables? What are they?

The sound quality ought to be clearer as it remains in the digital format right up to the Amp's internal circuitary, no room for degradation along a cable.

They are the round ones that are normally red and white for left and right channels, like hifi stuff has used for probably 30 years.

Oh OK, theyre Phono, not Coaxial connectors. At least, Ive never seen them being referred to as Coaxial before.

Coaxial just means a center core for the channel surrounded by an outer insulator then surrounded by an outer channel which is normally the ground/earth. All cables/wires like this can be classed as coaxial.

According to bitrate alone, you're right.

However, freeview via an entirely digital route to an LCD panel at its native resolution looks infinitely better than cable via an analogue SCART lead (even RGB). I know, because this is the switch I've recently made.

I was watching The Apprentice the other night and noticed that you can see every individual strand of Alan Sugar's stubble. Not my idea of beauty, just something I noticed.

Oh, and I wasn't actually watching it live - I was watching a perfect recording of the original digital stream that had been made the day before. Windows Media Centre automatically records every episode of this series for me.

You poor people stuck in vintage NTL-land should be screaming at NTL for failing to keep up. How long has Sky+ been around?

In fairness, you can have the highest bandwidth available, but if you decode it through a badly designed decoder, then it will still look worse. I have three freeview boxes (well, two set top boxes, and one USB box for my PC). Watching BBC1 on all of them (and comparing to my Samsung 2100 box), some appear worse than NTL, some better.

Just like to say that ive been installing these since Friday!(24th of march i think).
And of what ive seen of them so far, they are a lot more responsive even compared to the samsung 2100.(although a lot uglier to look at).
They are also a narrower but fatter box(if that makes any sense:confused: )
:tu:

Yep, they're on general release in Langley areas now. :)

And I agree they do generally seem faster when I've used them. They're cheaper as well!

Cheaper for ntl to buy from Samsung than the 2100 (which was already much cheaper than the Pace boxes!)

Do not know why ntl just bin the PACE and go with the samsung if they are cheaper to get new, wonder how much it costs to repair the old PACE?

thelem 28-03-2006 10:23

Re: new ntl samsung 2110 with digital output any one got one

I don't imagine they do much to the pace boxes except replacing all those broken doors and sticking a new piece of plastic over the LED display. I know the one I used to have had a burnt smart card when I got it, so they obviously hadn't even replaced that.

quadplay: Just out of interest, I don't suppose you could say what sort of prices we're talking about?

They can't in Bromley areas - the system doesn't currently allow for smartcards to be re-paired!

If you are really interested there was a presentation from about 2 years ago showing the cost of pace and samsung boxes declining which might give you an idea.

From memory, and it was a while ago, I think they were about £250 and they expected the price to drop to roughly £100 over the next 12-18 months.

You could try trawling the yearly presentations to check if you really want.

I recall seeing a figure of £75 for a Samsung 2100, but I've no idea whether that's accurate or not.

Hi Everybody there

Just a quick question...Has anyone tried this Samsung 2110 with Windows Media Center? Does the MCE remote control works with this STB?. MCE users with NTL Samsung 2100 have problems to change the channels due to "debouncing" feature in the STB.

Thanks

Daver_UK 31-05-2006 22:44

Re: new ntl samsung 2110 with digital output any one got one

I had one of these boxes installed last week but there is a problem with the remote control where only the channel +/- and pwer buttons work. The light on the pwer button flashes red instead of green when a button is pressed too. The engineers that did the install said that this was only the second samsung box they had installed and the other one had the same problem. NTL sent us a new remote but this has exactly the same problem.

Also, there is no chanel info displayed on screen when changing channel. Im not sure if this is normal as this is my first NTL box.

Has anyone else had this issue?

Graham M 18-10-2006 19:13

Re: new ntl samsung 2110 with digital output any one got one

They'll be all over the place but what you get all depends on what the installer has in his van on the day
