wifi sharing with neighbours

Is it legal for me to share my broadband connection over a wireless network with my neighbours or vice versa? we currently both subscribe to ntl but think we could just share one connection.

Technically, no, it's not legal. :)

It could also lead to arguments ;) , eg Turning the router off overnight, p2p bandwidth hogging, etc.

I wouldnt say it was "illegal" just against NTL's AUP.

It is not against the law if the person sharing has permission from the bill payer. However the bill payer may be braking the T&C of the ISP in this case NTL. (What they don't know won't hurt them)

However it ain't worth the hasle, if they decide to download a movie or other large content and you want to surf you are prob going to suffer slow speeds and vice verser!

Which already pointed out may cause problems between you!

So in my opinion not worth it!

I can't see why not. No different to a house full of people sharing one connection over wireless or with a router.

There is certainly no way NTL could actually know from the usage.

However, if it was me, I'd rather pay and get the full bandwidth.

Even then, I dont think there's a law on using someone else's Wifi connection without their knowledge

Thanx for all your interest - I dont think hogging the bandwith would be an issue and the router is on 24/7 anyhow

Technically, that would be theft...

And since you'd be also making unauthorised use of computer equipment, you could get done for computer misuse too.

One thing to note with this kind of setup,if anything is illegally downloaded over your wifi connection its your door they will knock. :Yikes:

Re: wifi sharing with neighbours

A package of new EU telecoms legislation coming into effect on July 25 will allow broadband users to share their broadband connection and costs with their neighbours.
The new regulatory legislation will supersede certain of the licensing requirements prescribed in the 1984 Telecommunications Act. The current regulatory regime requires that those operating a 2.4 GHz wireless network comply with the telecoms licensing requirements of the Telecommunications Act.
This applies even to a domestic user operating a wireless home network, according to wireless start-op MyZones.
From July 25 however the licensing requirements will be replaced by a more general 'authorisation' process, allowing MyZones to go live with a service that allows punters to share their broadband costs with their neighbours.
Regulatory requirements - which used to be onerous - seem to have all but disappeared already, judging by comments by a Radiocommunications Agency boss last week.
Speaking at ABC's Rural and Regional Broadband conference, Joe Sonke, head of broadband fixed wireless access at the Radiocommunications Agency, said the 2.4 GHz (802.11b) band is now license-exempt.

Are NTL on board do you think?

Note the mention of the Radio Communications Agency - this is in regards to use of the radio spectrum for wireless broadband. It does not invalidate the Computer Misuse Act, nor necessarily affect NTL's AUP.

It also refers to broadband sharing with consent - unauthorised use of someone else's broadband over wireless would still be illegal.

However this would be a shared connection with permission for either party to accesss the network with the bill payers consent. eg no theft involved

Then, as mentioned before, NTL's AUP not withstanding it would be perfectly legal.

The thing I wouldn't feel comfortable with - ignoring the risk of the neighbour going looking for something illegal - is that you're trusting the security of their home LAN as well as your own.

If they get a virus or an IRC bot sets up home, that'll come back against your connection too.
