Firewire and Camcorder not dected

Anybody know what might be happening here?

I have just bought a JVC GR-D240 camcorder.

manual here http://www.jvc.co.uk/files/instructi...t1380-001a.pdf

Basically I can't get Windows Xp to detect the camera via firewire at all.

I've tried the following.

Seeing if Firewire is enabled in BIOS.
Looking for a BIOS update
Windows update
Looking for drivers for the camera
Reading the manual but it's very vague on Firewire
Checking the web to see if anyone has managed this and they have, so it does work....
I've bought a new Belkin shielded cable so feel that this should not be the problem.
Checked that the Firewire is listed and appears to be working correctly in Device Manager. There are no ! marks anywhere.
Its a Texas Instruments firewire (Texas Instruments TSB82AA2 1394B OHCI 1.1+ Compliant Link-Layer Controller) on a Gigabyte GA-K8N Pro-SLI motherboard. NVidia chipset with latest drivers on everything that I can think of.
I've tried repeatedly banging it against a wall.
I've tried plugging the leads in, in the order suggested in the manual.
I've tried on battery and on mains
I've made sure all firewalls are off.
I've stopped the antivirus realtime protection.
The cable is 6-4 with the 4 being on the camera.I've removed all three of my last remaining hairs.
I've checked that the wire from the back of the firewire socket on the motherboard is plugged correctly into the motherboard. Its a "riser" type that occupies where a PCI card would go but uses a wire to plug into the motherboard.
I've looked through MS knowledge base for clues
I've done a google search
I've looked through JVC website for hints.

Anybody got any gems of advice?

Have you tried seeing if your DVD burning S/W can detect it?

Can WinXP see the Firewire port under the network connections?

On my PC it is shown as something like IEEE 1394 network.

Yes, it can and the firewall is off on it too.

Anyone else got any thoughts.....My Dad's camera (same model) works perfectly well on his PC.

Have you got a firewire connection on your VCR/DVD-R (to verify the firewire port on the camcorder is working)? If not, are you close enough to try your cam on his PC or vice-versa?

Do you mean on the camera? If so then I can't see any way of enabling or disabling it. (Manual link is above)

My mistake, I saw a T where there wasn't one, but, as far as I know you can't disable or enable a firewire connection under network connections as you would a normal network connection, it's either installed and enabled or not installed and doesn't actually show up at all.

Re: Firewire and Camcorder not dected

It is enabled and I could disable it if I wished.

And my Dad has the same camera but a different PC. His camera works on his PC but I have not yet tried his camera on my pc.....if that makes sense

Re: Firewire and Camcorder not dected

My Dad's camera worked first time on my PC.....looks like there is a fault with mine.

Tesco (where I bought it) will refund or replace it but the price was so good that demand was very high so it's likely I won't get a replacement and a refund will have to do.

Tesco website show it for £240.00

http://www.tesco.com/electrical/prod...Kit+-+(Silver)

When I went in to get it the price was £149.00 instore. As this was the display model and the manual was missing I got it for £109.00 .

It was a cracking bargain and you will see why I am disappointed that all I will get is a refund....and a large bill for buying an alternative....

Re: Firewire and Camcorder not dected

I've had similar (with the same camera too), it works on 1 out of 4 pc's I've tried it on, the one it worked on, just plugged card bus Firewire card with the camera connected to it and it all just installed and worked fine.

Since bought anther make of firewire cardbus card fo rmy own PC's , and not been able to get it going at all on that, need to borrow that original firewire card from work again to prove if its a problem with the card or not

This does seem to be common issue - with firewire I mean, not the camera, quite a few similar reports out on web

There is a XP bug fix from MS regarding " enumeratiing ports" or similar for firewire not detecting devices - have a look for that - didn't help in my case though

This one

Also some referneces here to putting the old firewire driver on instead to fix things

yeah my camera was from tesco too. got it for the same price and don't want a refund, I want this camera to work!!!!

Salu 27-02-2006 12:27

Re: Firewire and Camcorder not dected

All Tesco will do is offer a refund as they say they have no more stock. Their website are still able to sell you one for £299 though....

This doensnt seem to be a firewall problem with me as my PC will accept the camera (my dads) but not mine.

Re: Firewire and Camcorder not dected

The Firewall and Network Connection has nothing to do with pluggin A/V devices in AFAIK.

Oops typo.....I didnt mean firewall, I meant firewire....

Re: Firewire and Camcorder not dected

My Dad has kindly been sorting this for me today. He has spent since 9am on the phone and going backwards and forwards to Tesco. Eventually after being bounced around Head office's Customer relations/Press office/Customer service/technical helpline/website manager/local manager etc....Tesco have accepted the camera back to send to JVC for repair/replacement.....

Re: Firewire and Camcorder not dected

Got mine going now, turned out to be the firewire cable, although the one I was using at home was brand new and came with the PC firewire card.

I got hold of the cable I'd first used at work , plug it in - bing bong up it comes in Imaging devices !!

Go back to old cable - nothing

The cable which works is a much more serious looking affair, much thicker and lots of screening, on closer examination its a Belkin cable, no part number visible, and difficult to know if its a 4 or 6 wire - both cables appear to have six connectors in the big connector

Works OK on both laptops now

Don;t know if other cable is just duff - broken wire or just plain not suitable * its too small to buzz out with a meter
