*ALL* ntl 10Mb Discussion (Part 3)

Summary taken from last thread:-

ntl:home 120 (silver Ambit manufactured modem)

The following are not capable of 10Mb:
ntl:home 100 (silver Ambit manufactured modem)
Terayon Terajet 210
Motorola Surfboard 3100/4100
3com Tailfin
3com CMX
All Pace STBs

Testing has not completed on the Samsung STBs, however current results suggest around 8-9Mb may be possible. Higher speeds may be achieved with an upgrade to the uBR - but this has yet to be confirmed.

PLEASE do not call Customer Services/Faults/Technical Support requesting an upgrade for your Cable Modem. Technical Support cannot change your speed, and have been told not to send engineers for customers who are not receiving the full 10Mb downstream speed unless there are other factors involved.

If your modem requires an upgrade to receive the 10Mb service, ntl will contact you to advise you what to do.

FAQ's in part 1 of the thread:

Will the service be capped?
yes, there will be a 75gig/ month cap on the 10meg service that current 3meg users will be upgraded to

Will I need a new modem?
It appears that ntl 120 or later modems will have no problems with the speeds, however older modems and Set Top Box connections will need to be upgraded. Ntl have not released any information on this process yet that i have seen.

When are the new speeds going to be launched?
ntl have stated "By the end of 2006, the roll out of this new product portfolio will be complete."

My mate down the pub says he has already got 10meg, is he lying?
Quite possibly not, it appears that ntl are testing the 10meg service, and I have not noticed a particular pattern of who/ where is being tested.

Will the price change?
Ntl have stated that there are no plans to change monthly prices

What will the upload speed be?
Users who are testing the 10meg service at the moment have reported upload speeds that suggest it will be 512k.

What do i have to do to get 10meg?
We know ntl are upgrading 3meg customers first, but as for what to do... sit and wait for information from ntl!

ntl:home 120 (silver Ambit manufactured modem)

how do i get firmware update? I dont have it my 10 wont pass 3500kbps

Re: *ALL* 10MB Discussion (Part 3)

Just phoned CS for the second time to be told again that I can't have the upgrade as it isn't due for roll out until December. When I politely explained that other people have been upgraded according to Cable Forum he said it was probably the trial areas.

This seems to be a standard reply from CS but why bother to release the info for CS to say it's not available? I will just have to wait for the email he said I would get when the upgrade would take place!!!

I've run http://www.dslreports.com/tweaks
and get this

Receive Window (RWIN): 33580

Notes and recommendations:
https://www.cableforum.co.uk/images/local/2005/11/1.gif Choose RWIN between 94900 and 251120

I've downloaded the file but can somebody recommend a RWIN setting to use

I haven't touched my MTU since the days of 56k. I'm not really sure you'll gain anything when on a 10mb line. As for RWIN, don't really know much about it, sorry. May look into myself later.

On the dslreports tweak page, in the "speed" bit, it will only let me enter a 4 figure number, ie. 1000, won't let me enter 10000. How are you guys getting correct results (or am i doing something wrong here)

Service: cable
Speed (advertised) kbit/s: 1000

Edit:

Sorry just realised what i did wrong :p: :p:

Seems to be nothing yet - but over time, it'll probably be the same as what's happening already. That is, bandwidth hogs being downgraded to the 512kbps 'special' service. :)

1492 is for DSL, 1500 is the number for cable.

I'm in Guildford and I use the NTL 250 SACM. I have tried ringing CS and asking for the upgrade but get told that it isn't available yet. I noticed that they did upgrade work in Guildford on the 7th so I tried rebooting my modem but I am still at the 3mbit speed. I've tried logging into the tier migration but it seems to get stuck at validating username?

not all of the 3meg ppl got upgraded to 10Mbit so it means that the connections are not fully estabilised, there is still work to be done, at the moment so many people have the same problems of getting half speed but its not bcoz of the modem its because of their network gettin hammered i guess bcz even ppl that were on 2meg are on 10meg now

I got a phone call tis afternoon from ntl to let me know that the network issue preventing me from going on the 10 meg service was fixed and did i want to try upgrade again.

Quite a nice surprise after only reporting the issue over the last couple of days, so a big thumbs up to ntl! :)

Edit: Currently downloading at 1160 K/sec using the ntl:250 modem.

As an existing customer, I don't think that offer would be available (and I should think you'd get the 3Mbps config file, as no one with a Sammy has 10Mbps yet). :)

Yes it is,it is an offer on the ntl channel, available until 31st december. The offer says first month free when you upgrade your broadband speed,or any other sevices.I just saw it then on the channel.

That's a first - I wonder if, as per normal conditions, customers could upgrade for one month and then downgrade the next month? Or is there a longer minimum term than that?

fire 10-11-2005 16:40

Re: *ALL* ntl 10MB Discussion (Part 3)

Well it says the normal, subject to a minimum 12 month contract. But i don`t know if that means you have just got to keep broadband for the year, or what you have been upgraded to.

I have an NTL 250 modem if I log into the modem 192.168.100.1 can I find out what the maximum speed my modem is receiving in my area?

I mean I know i'm on the 2MB service and I get that in every speed test. I had a call last night from ntl offering me 10MB with a 75Gig cap for 37.99 but I see most of you ain't getting it so I don't want to pay extra if I ain't going to get the 10MB!

So I was wondering before I order if it shows the max speeds on the line?

The modem page will only show the maximum upstream & downstream rates for the service you are on. It will show the same info for all 2Mb users (2048000 down 200000 up), and for 10 Mb users (10240000 down 512000 up). You will have to run a speed check to see what actual speeds you are getting.

Did ntl just call you out of the blue, or had you already enquired about the upgrade?

UncleBooBoo 10-11-2005 17:07

Re: *ALL* ntl 10MB Discussion (Part 3)

No he called me up out of the blue.

He did not even know I was an NTL customer but he had my mobile number????

He also said he could not upgrade me as he only delt with new customers but he would pass my details along and I will get a call back.

I did tell him I was only thinking about it as I ain't going from 24.99 - 37.99 just for an extra meg or two!

I'm paying too much for 2MB as it is demon.net offer two meg for 17.99 un-capped!!!

On adsl you get to see the total speed of what's available on your line as well as the speed your subscribed too. Thought it might have been the same on cabe.

Not to worry i won't waste my time upgrading just in case.

You will find that those with the blue ntl 250 modem seem to be getting the full 10mb, those with ambit 120, 100 etc seem to be getting 5mb I had a ambit 120 this morning till 10 o clock when the engineer came out swapped it for a ntl250 modem, when i had the silver ambit 120 i got 5mb when he swapped it i got the full 10mb..
I dont think a lot of this is due to the network i think its due to the firmware on some of the modems not being able to cope with the 10mb speed.

I CONTACTED NTL TODAY AND ASKED ABOUT IT

LOOK FOR MORE CUSTOMERS AND DONT LOOK AFTER YOUR OLD CUSTOMERS

keep mtu at 1500

rwin should be a multiple of mss 64240 is a good value, I use 256960 but to use a value higher then 65000 you need to enable large recieve window, also keep mtu auto discovery enabled.

To set these tweaks drtcp is the easiest tool to use you can google for it.

Dunno how you can get 50mbit through a 10mbit pipe!

Chrysalis, I phoned yesterday as i was having issue with the modem before the swap, it was a faulty ambit 120 i had, when the engineer came out i showed him the download rate and showed him the stats on nthellworld regarding the 250, he swapped out my 120 for a 250 and we did a download test again bingo straight to 10mb he said that this was going to be a nightmare for them as it looked like he would be having to swap all the 120's out, he spoke to swansea and confirmed it with them that this has taken the download speed to the full 10mb and fixed the issue. He also said if this is the case with the new 10mb speed he would need a bigger van for all the 250's he would be having to replace.

Im thinking tho it looks like a firmware issue and all the has happened is that the ntl 250 modems have a version of their firmware that is capable of handling the 10mb maybe all the trialists were on these ntl 250's who knows.

Chrysalis 10-11-2005 18:22

Re: *ALL* ntl 10MB Discussion (Part 3)

Ok thanks, I did have an engineer due today I was going to fry my modem deliberatly but decided against it for various reasons the main one its immoral and cancelled the visit.

quote from kevin
"Have to agree here, if ntl had communicated to their staff correctly then i doubt any of this would have happened, it has been far too inconsistant from the word go. Maybe ntl think their customers dont speak to each other, If I go to upgrade my speed on the speed upgrade page and it offers me 2mb or 10mb its obvious there is no 3mb anymore, so which one if i am looking for a speed increase am i going to take ?

The fact that they put out an announcement saying all their current high tier customers (3MB) would be the first to be upgraded then joe bloggs who is a 2mb customer see's that he can get it but me i pay 37.99 a month cannot seems to me a little wrong, im not sure if the 3mb first announcment came from ntl or from someone on here that i do not know but if it was from ntl how do they expect their high paying customers to feel.

All it would have taken was someone to say we are either allowing 10mb accross the board, or not allowing it period. This it seems is a simple decision to make but was never taken and now we have this....a mess."

Classic example, some people getting upgraded even if they got an incapable modem, others been told they cant be upgraded, and I even got physically downgraded because the guy seemed to hate me because I upgraded from 2mbit and kept going on it was for 3mbit user's only. I wasnt arguing with him at that point about the modem but just saying it is possible I did it via the website and at that point I was preying he wouldnt downgrade me and he didnt indicate he would. But soon after the phonecall he sent the 2mbit config to my modem, now the strange thing is noone else was able to reuupgrade me rententions or the website as only 1 change allowed a month so how did he downgrade me after I upgraded? hmmmmm.

quote
"Is there something wrong with the Adslguide speedtest?

Been having varying results, which doesn't tie in with results from Robin Walker's site (10mb), or the download speeds i am getting (1.2mb/s). I am, according to the Adslguide speed test, running at between 5mb and 9mb.... just doesn't add up

I also find that a lot of the time, the Adslguide speed test isn't working, something i haven't seen before (unless its upgraded NTL customers doing what i am doing) "

Adslguide the traffic is leaving ntl's network so its a true internet speedtest, other factors involved such as capability of adslguide's speedtest server and ntl's peering to adslguide's isp. Robin walker speedtest is on ntl's own network so you essentially just testing internal speeds.

I'm amazed that they offered to swap your samsung out. That's all I asked for and was told I couldn't have it. So I cancelled the TV and telephone and hey presto the modem will be installed in December.
It's extraordinary how NTL are so short sighted that they lose a customer!

Re: *ALL* ntl 10MB Discussion (Part 3)

Given this section of the first post of part 3 ..

**********
The following are not capable of 10Mb:
ntl:home 100 (silver Ambit manufactured modem)
Terayon Terajet 210
Motorola Surfboard 3100/4100
***********

I have the Ambit 100 modem and I was upgraded to 10M a couple of days ago. The modem received the new settings (I checked). But alas I get no more than 3M (which I was on before)....

Now the above says 'not capable of 10Mb' - does this mean actually not capable of 10M (but could do 5M), or, its simply not capable of being used on the faster network. If the later is the case, i this why I can get no more than 3 M?

Thing is, If I were getting say 5M I would be happy and would wait for further upgrades as and when NTL gets around to it. But since I have no more than 3M I am wondering if it is the modem or something else. CS / Tech support have no ideas .....

Any thoughts?

cheers

Mark

Sorry if this has been covered already but it has been a very long day and I really cant be bothered sifting through the mass amount of posts. Can anyone tell me if the Renfrew area has been upgraded yet to 10mb? If not, does anyone have any idea when it will be?

If it is available can some very kind and decent person tell me where I go to obtain this upgrade?

Im from Renfrew and i phoned CS this morning to be told that 10meg wasnt available till Jan 06...I was on 2 meg, done the upgrade on the tier page online and a quick reboot of the modem and i was on 10meg. The speeds are strange at the moment...sometimes im hitting 950kb/sec and other times im getting 400kb/sec.....my average after doing a few tests today seems to be about 830kb/sec. Im using a Terrajet modem. Overall im happy with it.

Re: *ALL* ntl 10MB Discussion (Part 3)

I'm on 3Mbit at the moment, with a Terayon Terajet 210 modem. I'm happy to wait until whenever they decide to upgrade me automatically, but from what I've seen in these threads over the last couple of days it's all rather a case of the left hand not knowing what the right hand is doing at NTL at the moment. Conflicting information, wrong information, misleading information, all steming from the basic fact that no one has obviously made it clear to 100% of the CS staff what exactly their line should be. Sounds to me like they've been left to interpret this 10Mbit upgrade instruction however they want.

Like I said, I'm happy to wait until my alloted time to get this upgrade, as hopefully NTL will have more of an idea about what exactly should be happening.

Good luck to all you people experiencing issues, hope you get it sorted.

It does annoy me that they say the SB4100 doesnââ‚ƚ¬Ã¢â€žÂ¢t work on 10mbit as the spec say it works up to 38mbit down and 10mbit up. Unless there talking about DOCSIS! And even then its dam annoying as most people paid for there modems a long time ago and have already lost out with the monthly charges, now they lose there treasured modem!

Bit gutted with Jan 06 tbh but I am happy to wait. Just wanted some clarification thats all. There just seems to be too many people (not on these forums) contradicting themselves and giving conflicting stories. Ah well stuff it and I will happily and patiently await 10mb's arrival. Having said that I may actuall contact CS after work tomorrow and see if they can shed some light on it, if any! My friends at Maxwell Road in Glasgow are staying very tight lipped and are a bit reluctant to tell me anything.:(

For the past few weeks browsing has been real cr@p, sites unable to load/non existent etc., since the 10Mb upgrade everything is suddenly really sweet. Well worth the upgrade for the improved browsing experience alone.
Downloading big files from Germany averaging 1MB/sec.
No problems with the modem losing connection etc.
Appears ntl have done a decent jobbie in this area. :tu:

Oh, and by the way, †œThe Bloke in the Pubââ‚Âà ‚¬Ãƒâ€šÃ‚ was only 9 days out as far as my speed upgrade was concerned, although I did have to beg ntl to do it. ;)

Thanx, you watch me :D I happened to pass a couple of NTL installers today messing in one of the green boxes near me, they both agreed that the samsung may possibly go to 7mb and they said that the silver 200's are being phased out and if u are to have a SACM installed, then it will be the little blue 250. that'll do for me! and to order it now is best cos soon as all the other samsung users find out that it wont take the 10mb then there's gonna be a huge demand for SACM's :Yikes:

Has anyone yet reported the capability of Routers attached to their 10Mb/s cable modem.

I know the Linksys BEFSR41 v1 and 2 only had a 10Mb/s half-duplex WAN port and I guess anyone using a wireless B router via wireless can't get half of the rated speed - but what about actual perfomance with these and other routers?

I have found no speedtest has given me a full 10mbit, though downloading from multiple sources (say two dls at once from ms) I can get my full whack. So be aware.

For instance Robin Walker's speed test seems to give me 4980 or 5002 most times, so it looks like there must be some kind of something going on somewhere.

I have had the same problems. But, you do have to remember that there will be a vast amount of servers that don't actually 'have' 10mb connections, or have their bandwith to unique ip's throttled.

Is definitely 10mb here though, as shown in previous screenshot.

I do suggest using mirror.ac.uk to test.

So it leaves the question will my service be upgraded or will it be a disaster like the last year of service?

I've just been reading on another thread that people are slowly being upgraded to 10meg, though you have to phone NTL and ask them to upgrade you apperently. Then I checked the competition.

UK Online offering 24meg. £29.99
Be also offering 24meg. £24.00

NTL 10meg. £37.99?

Ok, so UK online and Be are ADSL2, but how long before NTL catch up?? Or drop their prices!!

On top of that, I have the sammy STB which nobody seems to know if it will handle 10meg.

Not sure if I'll bother asking for the upgrade now. :erm:

In fairness to NTL - In effect that means the prices for UK Online are £40 and Be £35 if you take into account phone line rental.....

My understanding from a post by Jimbo is that this is a limitation of the interface between the Sammy and the UBR, and NTL are investigating whether UBR upgrades will help, or whether Sammys will need to be replaced. Until these investigations are complete, NO upgrade is available for Samsungs (though you MIGHT get some kind person to arrange a SACM).

NTL 10meg. £37.99?

Ok, so UK online and Be are ADSL2, but how long before NTL catch up?? Or drop their prices!!

those ADSL 24meg product will only give you the top speed if you're very very close to the exchange. I agree though as a direct price comparison NTL aren't as good.

ukonline is actually 22meg max and this is what they say:

Quote:

We believe that if you are less than 2Km away from your telephone exchange, you should be able to get higher than 8Mb, and up to 22Mb. Final download speed depends on the length and quality of your phone line, which we check during Sign Up. If your line won't support 22Mb, but will support higher than 8Mb, we will let you know what speed we think you can get during Sign Up, and set your line as fast as it can go. If we are not able to guarantee at least 8Mb, we will offer you a lower speed service.

see here how NTL will always defeat ADSL!

you appear to need to be under 2.5km from your exchange in order to be better off speed wise than NTL customers. and that's subject to link quality and distance.

I just asked for a SACM and been told once its installed it will be at the 10meg speed. I have a samsung box at the moment, and they can't take the new speed.

Re: *ALL* ntl 10MB Discussion (Part 3)

Today NTL informed me that the 10Mbps service for EXISTING 3 Mbps customers began on the 8th November 2005 and is scheduled for completion by the end of December 2005 - please note that this is for EXISTING 3 Mbps customers. I understand that new applicants for the 10Mbps service will receive it ASAP.

This is all the information I have.

It must be because you don't have a NTL modem in the first instance, whereas I already have a 120, so they wont sort it out for me!, :(
