Sudden drop in blueyonder speed!?

Hi there,

I'm on TW's broadband 'complete' package (i think it's the medium speed package) and have been quite happy with my downstream speeds of 1700Kbps on a bad day up to about 2500 on a good one.

Last night (tues 17th) there was a sudden drop in my speed, and it has remained consistently low since then. Now my speed (going by the same speed test which gave the prev figures) is averaging 350Kbps, but sometimes rising to 500kbps if i'm really lucky. Also, the orange 'activity' light on my sb5100 modem is blinking slightly intermittently, instead of blinking steadily as before.

In the modem's log for the time when it dropped last night (around half nine or so):

Does anyone know if this means anything, or know what my problem is? I'm currently girding my loins for the inevitable call to customer services which will probably go nowhere, and would like to have some idea of what's what when i call them so they can't just fob me off.
I've unplugged, re-plugged, reset, checked connections etc...
Really hope someone can help

Thanks

Re: Sudden drop in blueyonder speed!?

they will no doubt get your to check for spyware and viruses and say that is the problem its becoming very common, im not to techy myself, but the values seem about right but someone with more experiance here might be able to tell you, its possiable your upstream has changed onto a congestted upstream channel and that why other than that i cnt sya much more myself

Re: Sudden drop in blueyonder speed!?

if your modem config file is still 4096-384 then your on the 4meg service not 10meg so dont expect ftp of more than 500kbps download or 50kbps upload

EDIT looks like a SW file failed and it down loaded the 4meg speed FILE just a gess compairing with my 4meg congfig

Re: Sudden drop in blueyonder speed!?

I was upgraded to 10 meg last week, great i thought 1100k download speeds during the day on week days, but in the evening and weekends struggling to get 200k a lot of the time, i have just downloaded the blueyonder instant support tool and it took ages, about 30kb ps. Anybody any ideas or is it just teething troubles?

Andrewcrawford23 20-01-2006 09:20

Re: Sudden drop in blueyonder speed!?

Going on other threads its not teethy problems it simply the network can not handle loads of people downlaoding 24/7, and the upstream channels are beyond there capacity

Re: Sudden drop in blueyonder speed!?

The joys of offering a totally uncapped service to be honest. Great for heavy downloaders, but a complete kick in the nuts for those who just want responsiveness and the odd quick download here and there.

Honestley, who is ordering 10mb broadband for the odd download here and there? All internet companys try to sit on the fence with this one, they entice you with "UKs fastest broadband, download 1,000,000 mp3's in 10 mins" and then in a smokings not good for you type voice say, oh but don't be doing anything illegal... really meaning yes do loads of things illegal, tell you friends and get them doing it but don't get caught....??!

Dunno I'm doing less than 10GB a month on the 8Mbit I've got now.

Bit of a guilty conscience dude, who mentioned legalities of anything? ;) ISPs generally don't care what you're doing more how much of it you're doing.

Doesn't take many people downloading a few hundred GB a month or uploading 70GB/month before you get problems.

I was just saying that BY can be a crap ISP for people like myself because they allow people to take the **** even if it's killing their network, meaning my 10GB/month takes longer than it should, that's all :)

Anything i said was just a reference to the strategy of some isp's, namely by and how they attract customers.

Same as everything else. They're hardly likely to say 'average speed broadband with average usage allowance and average price' are they?

Welcome to the world of sales ;)

Does it not depend on who your uploading to? My dl speeds are not always constant, its just the way it is. I know on p2ps, dl speeds can be **** poor, a lot of the time on p2ps my uploads are faster than my downloads.

yes it does depend on who your uploading to, say your uploading to someone on dial up, they can only download from you at there max DL speed 56k, even tho your capible of sending that data say 256k, but the people im uploading to, i know for a 100% fact they can download my maximum upload speed plus 100x more, so its definetly network, quite simply the bottom line is Blueyonder are f***ing S**T not only have they extremly poor upload speeds, there service is so unreliable.

and p2p is crap anyway,so many people are happy to download as much as they can but very few willing to upload, as it canes there bandwith. use torrents instead.. youll get much faster downloads.

Definetly, torrents are miles better than p2ps, p2ps are better for finding rares though and theres more choice. I have rarley had connection problems since I joined BY, cabel is miles better than DSL, when I was with AOL silver, I kept getting cut off, im staying away from phone lines. I'm not sure if BY do DSL.

Re: Sudden drop in blueyonder speed!?

no BY is cable only, There ok i suppose, but the upstream speeds are a alot slower than dsl, they seem to give full concentration on downstream speeds and not worry about upstream, look at bulldog DSL 8mb Down 400k up, BY 10mb Down 300k Up.. i think it has something to do with the copper in phonelines why DSL uploads are faster

and i also find (so far) BY to be not very reliable at all, in the few weeks ive been on with them, i have had 3 times where i cant connect, cable light just blinking, and a phone call to them just gets me "there is an outage in the area, and you will be back on asap" which the 3rd time (yesterday in fact) took me untill 7am this morning to connect again :td: alltho, from what i read on forums, cable is alot more relible than DSL, all i say to that is, i feel so so sorry for people on DSL

I've had cable problems also where my modem keeps flashing the lights to indicate that it's offline, you can't even turn your modem off for some reason as well ,and I got the same response when I phoned them, just like you say " there are people working in the area", it's happened about 3 times so far but yes, stay clear from DSL I still do not regret in anyway turning to BY and when I see these other ISPs I just think how lucky I am.

Re: Sudden drop in blueyonder speed!?

if you have the webstar DPX100 the only way to turn off or restart is to pull plug and put back in, or goto address http://192.168.100.1/gscan.htm and restart your modem from there..

Re: Sudden drop in blueyonder speed!?

I have joined this forum in hoping to find out what is happening with my BY internet speed. I have moved to Birmingham area and my internet speed has been very slow so far. It is not so bad as I get 500kbps average during the morning and day, but during the peak evening time the speed is so slow that I can't use the internet.

I have contacted BY, and never mind the 4mb upgrad that is supposed to be finished, I don't even get a dial up speed during the evening time. This is very bad since I come home from work and that is the time I want to use the internet! So basically I am paying 25 pounds for nothing! BY told me at the end that it is too many modems are trying to connnect at the same time. (why just can't tell me that they have over sold the bandwidth?) Now I can't play CS anymore. None at BY can tell me when will the problem will be sorted, and they always tell me that there is something wrong with the network. (Doh.. I can see that!!!)

I just want to say to the people here that , never mind the complaining about
the speed being 500kbps slow... it is true that if you have 2mb or 4mb line you should get a better connection, but there are lots of people like myself who can't even open up a google.com in less than 3 mins.

I have sent couple of emails to BY, but no replies so far.

Re: Sudden drop in blueyonder speed!?

I can well understand your frustration, but its never been anything else with Blueyonder, the main problem is oversubscription, but a lot of it depends on the computer populated residencies where you live, they like you all want to be online at the same time and the result is chaos,it starts when the schools close and ends about midnight,I cant see it ever being any different, when I started with them about 6 years ago and was on dial up it used to take anything up to an hour to even get a connection, you had to wait until others logged off,you can blame the chat rooms a lot .....it is better if you have the 1Mg broadband or higher of course but not much....even the 10Mg users have problems as can be seen from these forums ....This as I have come to realise is the way it is unfortunately,we can only hope and pray it will get better ..

Re: Sudden drop in blueyonder speed!?

I did everything that I can to make a complaints to the Telewest, and they finally got back to me. They actually told me that the upgrade is DONE. And it was done very some time ago...

I have never EVER experienced any speed increase for 4mb connection. The fastest speed I experienced is 100kbs download speed on 5:00 am. If I was supposed to get the 4mb download speed during non-peak time, I think I was supposed to get faster download speed.

anyway, they told me that they are working on the upgrades , because they did not expect the traffic to increase so much... dho... and they can't actually do nothing about the problem I was experiencing until the end of March.

Instead, they offered me a refund until end of March for my internet connection. While this does not sort out my problem of not being able to use the internet for god knows how long, I won't be paying for such a **** service.

I just wish I could leave them and be with some other company.

At least you wont pay untill the problem is sorted out, there are worse isps out their trust me, but mabe it could depend on the area that you are in, all I can say is TG for telwest when I dumped AO HELL.

Re: Sudden drop in blueyonder speed!?

well, no internet until end of March does scares me to hell but I guess its time to look after my garden then :D

YES.. i heard that AOL is even worse. I was actually very happy with most of the ISPs here in the UK after considering that I came from South Africa.

sorry for the non-title related story but here is their situation

Poor people in SA is still getting LAMEST internet service from Telkom.

http://www.telkom.co.za/athome/produ..._how_much.html

They are paying separate service to the LINE RENTAL AND ISP SERVICE + you have to buy Modem. to setup the service it costs like 150 pounds ++ and 100 pounds ++ every month for 192kbps ADSL service with 3GB SHAPED cap. :Yikes:

I am including my diagnostic data as requested by you. I have phoned the
help line again last night and they asked me to change my uploading
stream channel. It did help a bit, but it is still slow and it is only a
temporary solution. I do not believe changine up stream channel is not
going to solve the problem for good. The technical help line TOLD ME
that it is problem of overloading network in our area. So to fix this
problem YOU have to do something. Please do not blame/forward the
problem to me. I have verified this so many times with the technical
help line.

Last night was terrible and here are the details of the data requested.

Not sure if this covers you as it's "Midlands" in the generic sense:

http://www.blueyonder.co.uk/status/s...?ticket=311394

Been outstanding now over a week about "slow connection speeds" and been updated a couple of times - no clue as to the cause or the expected "fix" time tho.

For a while now I've had regular disconnections from servers I'm connected to, and my MSN has gone mad with reconnecting every 20-30mins :dozey: Would be nice if they actually gave an idea of when they think the problems would be resolved on the status page as well :erm:

Well now a few with slow speeds yet again..

looks like foneing BY again, this time ask who your talking to as it apears we have a contract firm also taking calls, I didnt know till I read it here...
and some of those guys have nooo idea what they are on about...

its easy for By to blame network etc ect.. when it isnt...

only 1 in 5 of the jobs Ive been out to have been real network issues, faulty modems, bad connections, high upstreams caused by loose fittings, ingress..

but untill a tec looks checks, makes sure its none of the above, then blame the network...

we get to talk to second line, the guys mostly know their jobs...will not blame spyware etc, just to get rid of you...and will help...

again, if I get there and it works, my code would be nff...so if it falls over at 5 pm book a tec for 4-7.... we can ask for the account to be monitored..
this will see when it happens, whats happening....how long the downtime is,
and can check to see if its happening to others in the same area...

its not much good coming here and saying its sucks, some tecs do know what they are doing..

Worth mentioning though that you're only talking about the HFC / RF plant, whereas people complaining about the network are more often than not complaining about congestion on the network which isn't really down to the RF network so much as what's on the other end. The problems with performance in peak times are almost certainly congestion or CMTS issues.

PS I'm not saying all techs suck I'll just stick with saying you do :)

Am I right in saying you'll NEVER reach speeds of 1700k/sec or 2500k/sec as quoted on the complete 4mbit service nevermind the elite 10mbit service, that will probably max out around 1300k/sec.

With the complete 4mbit service you'll max around 490k/sec so I wouldn't be that worried with your speeds currently.

Have you tried rebooting the modem?
I usually find that the pc/activity light is not a great indicator of what the problem is, but rebooting the modem usually sorts that out, so if they are connected.......?

No you aren't he's talking about the 2Mbit service is talking about kilobits per second all the way through his post not kilobytes. He went from 1700kbps+ to 350-500kbps.

Re: Sudden drop in blueyonder speed!?

go to run and type cmd to enter command prompt and type the following:
netsh int ip reset c:\resetlog.txt

Blueyonder i was once told by helpful support person are not allowed to give this out because its a fix for a microsoft error. They would rather run ya thru ipconfig...netstat...etc
If you installed any updates to yr OS (sp2 is major culprit) a give away is long delay releasing ip number, dhcp service not responding to yr instruction to stop and yr ip beginning with 169, also internet works after restart for maybe a few mins.
these things indicate winsock corruption and the above command will solve that.
My connection was repaired (for third time in a year with this command and ive sorted a few pc's with same issue) over the weekend despite BY passing the buck to microsoft.
Fair enough i suppose but it wouldnt hurt to let people try it.
AND you have used the instant support tool havent ya? That will report DNS errors etc, however you need the disc as the link is broken too it on the website!heh

Re: Sudden drop in blueyonder speed!?

does the lack of resonse mean this was the problem...
has anyone else simply typed the winsock reset command in when all else had failed?

Well there could have been..

but if allowed try this site for more info and to possible causes and fixes..

I say allowed in case the posting of sites is not...
