Alarm to send street yobs fleeing

I wonder if this will be available soon in keyring format? there's that many chavs and huddies around here It'd have a kind of moses effect as I walked down the street. :D Link

Wow, that's brilliant! I can think of a few places in Hemel Hempstead that could do with one of those. :erm:

Re: Alarm to send street yobs fleeing

A good idea in principle, I know the link says that if your there for a short period then you won't be affected "much" but surely anything over the usual background noise is an invasion of 'personal space' for the innocent. What about toddlers in prams etc etc out with mothers at night, aren't they gonna scream without knowing what they're hearing and not being able to do anything about it.

I think it needs a bit more thought IMHO

Good point.

It appears in principle to be a good method of moving loiterers from shop fronts but would not be any good at dispersing the gangs as all they will do is move elsewhere, depending on the hangout spot of the month!

Toddlers shouldn't be out at night! :erm: Ours are always in bed at 7pm. I can't think of any circumstances under which I or Mrs T would be hanging around outside our local Spar with one of our kids in a pram last thing at night. Even a single mum in need of a pint of milk and with no option but to take their child out with them would not be hanging around, they would be in the shop and out again.

More and more we seem to be making this country some sort of police state with restrictions on everything.

If I was reading about people contemplating this in some backwards country with no respect for peoples' liberty I'd be shocked.

To find this is being contemplated in my own country is a crying shame.

In what sense is it a 'police' state if a shopkeeper or a local council wants to put up a device to stop people congregating somewhere? How is it any different than someone erecting a physical fence? Do you help to bring about a 'police state' every time you lock your front door?

In an ideal world, no they wouldn't be out, yours are fortunate in that fact, other toddlers with parents of less :erm: concern for their kids wouldn't give it a second thought, no matter what time, unless they leave them home alone ( but thats going OT )

Well in all fairness a street corner is public space. If the device is beeing used just in the shop thats different, but if I decide, for example, to have a cigarette on the corner with some friends, then having 2000 decibel hi pitched whistling in my ear is not very fair.

I would have thought that a good number of such parents might themselves be young enough to hear the sound themselves ... :erm: :D ;) but you're right, that's veering OT a bit.

OOPS, my exageration meter just went off :D , I know what you mean though, it does seem a bit drastic, even though some places might 'seem / deem' for it to be so, I think otherwise :2cents:

If it is on their own private property and the effect does not work outside their property then fine. They can already ban people under a certain age from coming into the shop, for example.

But using technology to stop people meeting up in a public place? Step too far. I can see it now - "Big Brother is deafening you."

Maybe we should support mass poisonings and get rid of all the people we don't like in society. If we don't stop this sort of thing now it will get worse.

I don't think this is very fair, I don't want to have to endure high pitched noises, possibly detrimental to my hearing, when I want to go to certain places.

Surely I have the right to go to any public place I want?

Of course they are, everyone knows you can judge everyone by stereotypes - that's what they're there for :).

Sadly it's the way of the world, a minority tends to spoil it for everyone - but no one seems to be able to come up with a better solution than punishing everyone

If we assume that you do not hang around by the front door/atm at your local mini Tesco shop, then the system will not affect you, will it?

The system does seem a little indiscriminate, but so are the yobs that hang around for what would appear to be no other reason than to make a nuisance of themselves. What other reason can there be for actually leaning on the ATM if you're not using it?

Interesting idea, we will have to see how practial it turns out to be.
For poor people who are not there to cause trouble though it would be annoying.....plus surely this would send dogs crazy and they would be barking constantly.

oh yeah. I often hang around town like the chav i am :disturbd:

Unless they are not doing ilegal activites then nothing can be done. Just because they are scaring people though their presense is showing what this stereotype is doing to people.

If this was a alarm only black people could hear and was used to scare them away so they dont scare others because they mistrust black people there would quite rightly be outrage.

But it isn't. :dozey: And what they are doing is 'low level nuisance', which is precisely the sort of thing that can be made illegal, in a way, by use of the now-famous ASBO.

So far as I can see, the only people who do not understand how intimidating groups of youths can be are the youths themselves.

Yes we recognise the intimidation, but if I am intimidated by old peoples faces would it be right to make everyone over 20 wear a bag over their head when outside?

Maggy 09-01-2006 16:52

Re: Alarm to send street yobs fleeing

I think the principle is to allow OTHER customers to walk in and out of the premises without impediment or being harrassed.A lot of shopowners are trying to use something to move the small gangs outside their shop. The ones I've seen so far use classical music played loudly outside the shop..the youngsters can't stand it and move on.

However this idea does seem a little harsh on those who are legit under 20's customers that just want to buy something.

I understand how imtimidating they can be, but I am also a youth and I do not count myself as among them. Most youths have equal fear and annoyance at these gangs but this system is simply clumping all of them in one big group.

Treating all of them the same because they are of the same age group

I think your analogy is a little weak. The fact is, you aren't intimidated by gangs of ugly pensioners. Pensioners are intimidated by gangs of teenagers acting in a generally unruly way.

Saaf_laandon_mo 09-01-2006 16:55

Re: Alarm to send street yobs fleeing

Anyway how does the device differentiate between under 20s and over 20s? Or are they assuming all those people that hang around outside shops and on corners after dark are under 20?

I could see this being employed very usefully in red light areas

Sorry Damien but you just aren't going to be finding gangs of OAP's hanging outside the local late night opening store..Most are tucked up in bed at that time. :erm:

Possibly, but it still stands that this isnt a fair system.

I think this system should be introduced IN post offices and banks at lunch times to keep the old dears away. Yes they aren't very threatening, but boy do they take for ever to cash in their pensions or buy stamps.

In all seriousness, Im going to have to agree with Kliro and Damien on this. Its not a fair system to put all youths in the same category. Too many people nowadays simply think that a group of teens standing on the street are looking for trouble or looking to cause trouble. Unfortunately its the trouble making youths that have given you all a bad name. Yes its not fair, but life aint fair anyway (well not always) so you'll just have to get used to it.

That's only if they aren't wearing ipods (or similar) turned to full volume thus damaging their hearing.

I can remember how boring it was being a teenager (no money and nowhere to go) nothing has changed

There is a guaranteed cure for yoof and we all increase the numbers year by year until we become moaning old fogies! ;)

The best option is to play music that nobody in the age group would like (Max Bygraves, Des O'conner) there'd soon disapear.

I don't have a problem with them bineg there in groups.

Except there is a woman a few doors up from me how has problems (she lost the plot when she came home and found her ol' man in bed with another bloke in a compermising postion).

She shouts at him (even though he's not acually there) she has thrown poo over cars that park outside her house (we have never been targets as my parents told us off when she was acting strangly). she has had a dolls head stuck on a stick with half black and half white face. which she points at peoples doors.

Kids often sit on the local green NTL box and swear at her. there are he people how should be targeted

<snip>

Why is it when I couldn't stand Max Bygraves as a teen I am expected to like him as I get older?

There isn't a switch that comes on immediately turning your music taste off.

Don't forget there are those of pensionable age that would certainly argue the point.

Anyhow. In areas where you do not want yoofs hanging about (such as outside late opening shops) it seems a reasonable idea, but it should go hand in hand with providing entertainment that these teenagers can enjoy and participate with, that doesn't cost the parents an arm and a leg.

Presumably high frequency. Older people aren't that good at hearing high frequencies. But it's unlikely it would suddenly stop being audible when you reach 20.
