Broadband configuration/connection
Have a cable modem connected to the PC via a USB connection and all works fine, want to share the broadband via a router to another PC. This means an ethernet cable from modem to router and then to PCs. Does this mean I will have to go through the process of re-installing my broadband connection again ? (I remember the installation instructions said use one type of cable or the other), I'm assuming the configurations may be different, or, could I just remove the USB cable now, insert an ethernet (no router) and my broadband connection would continue as before.

Re: Broadband configuration/connection
You do not have to reinstall or reregister the modem. You can move over to using ethernet now without a problem assuming that you have ethernet on your PC and the appropriate drivers installed. Once you put the router in then you should restart the modem but that should be it. The router itself will need some configuration depending on the model and services that it offers.

Re: Broadband configuration/connection
So just to confirm, as things stand now I can remove the USB connection between my PC and the modem, replace it with an ethernet cable, do nothing else and my broadband should continue as if nothing has happened ?
|
Re: Broadband configuration/connection
you *must* reboot the cable modem when you switch connections- pull the power out, remove the usb cable, wait 30 seconds, replace the power, then when SYNC and RDY go solid on the modem connect the ethernet cable.
Then things should go swimmingly :) |
[Merged] Linksys Befsr41 4 port router
Two PCs, one XP, one Windows 98, NTL Broadband modem connection set up on XP PC, purchased router and set up as advised in posting on this forum (at http://www.cableforum.co.uk/board/sh...ad.php?t=38856 ) Original PC with XP still works fine with broadband, other PC unable to connect to internet, this one has never had any internet connection, should I run the NTL broadband installation disk on this machine and if so do I enter the same details as I did on the XP PC ?

Re: Linksys Befsr41 4 port router (Part 2)
I'm assuming you have an ethernet card in your Win 98 PC. If so simply connect that to the router using ethernet cable, switch on the PC, and it should be running.
---------- Post added at 14:07 ---------- Previous post was at 14:05 ---------- I'll merge this with your last thread as it all relates to how to configure and install your network, and may reduce duplication of previous questions and answers. |
Re: Linksys Befsr41 4 port router (Part 2)
Yes, card installed and recognised but still no connection...
|
Re: [Merged] Linksys Befsr41 4 port router
So the ethernet card is getting an IP address from the router?
No network icon on the bottom of the taks bar with a red cross through it? Check contol panel > network connections - right click the network card and check status or properties - is the IP address given assigned by DHCP? |
Re: [Merged] Linksys Befsr41 4 port router
Check in internet options, the connections tab, then lan settings...look to see if the 'automatically detect settings' is ticked.
|
Re: [Merged] Linksys Befsr41 4 port router
You will not need to run the ntl installation disk. The issue is to ensure your network settings on the Win 98 PC are being issued by the router, and not a legacy from something else.
Has the win 98 PC ever been connected to anything, even dial up? |
Re: [Merged] Linksys Befsr41 4 port router
Hope to reply to some of the questions before more arrive !!
Don't know if the card is getting an IP address from the router (How do I check ?) No Network icon on task bar 'AUTOMATICALLY DETECT SETTINGS' is ticked Win 98 did at one time connect to intenet via a dialup modem (Not NTL) |
Re: [Merged] Linksys Befsr41 4 port router
I'd delete the dial up connection if its still listed
|
Re: [Merged] Linksys Befsr41 4 port router
On tools, Internet Options, Dial Up settings, nothing shown...
|
Re: [Merged] Linksys Befsr41 4 port router
hmm, no network card being seen by the PC?
Open control panel > system > look for device manager (sometimes under hardware). Are there any yellow "?" icons (if so right click and delete them). Similarly and icons with a red "x" (right click and deleted). Then reboot the PC. You should be prompted to install drivers, so have the Win 98 or other driver disks ready. |
Re: [Merged] Linksys Befsr41 4 port router
No yellow question marks or red crosses....
|
Re: [Merged] Linksys Befsr41 4 port router
What do you get if you open a command prompt and type "ipconfig /all"
|
Re: [Merged] Linksys Befsr41 4 port router
Opened run, typed 'ipconfig/all' nothing shown, Opened Winipcfg=Ethernet Adaptor Info:- IP Address 0.0.0.0 Sub Net Mask 0.0.0.0 does this help ?

Re: [Merged] Linksys Befsr41 4 port router
Your ethernet card isn't working, either that or the cable connected to it si faulty.
To rule out the cable, can you temporarily swap it over with the windwos XP PC. If the win XP PC still works you know the cable is OK. Going back to Control panel > System > Device Manager is there a "network connections" item, if so expand that and you should see your network card. right click and select properties - does it say working normally? |
Re: [Merged] Linksys Befsr41 4 port router
Went to 'Network connections' in Device manager and it says its working ok, so it looks like its the cable ? (Not been able to change over as I am relaying the instructions by phone and am not keen on anyone else swopping my cables !)
|
Re: [Merged] Linksys Befsr41 4 port router
Final option before you get as far as changing cables, especially if you are working remote is just to try rebooting things. Power off both PCs and the router. Leave off for 5 minutes. Switch on router, let settle for a minute or two, then boot up the PC.
|
Re: [Merged] Linksys Befsr41 4 port router
do i power off the modem as well, if so is it last off and first back on ?
|
Re: [Merged] Linksys Befsr41 4 port router
You can do, but it's the connection between router and PC that is at fault, so rebooting those two might trigger something (probably not though).
|
Re: [Merged] Linksys Befsr41 4 port router
Powered off as suggested, 2nd PC still not connecting to internet, also swopped cables, again no good, the cable originally on the 2nd PC when connected to the other PC allows an internet connection, anything else I could try ?
|
Re: [Merged] Linksys Befsr41 4 port router
Have you got current drivers for the network card. Can you try a different network card?
---------- Post added at 23:37 ---------- Previous post was at 23:34 ---------- you can try also entering at a command prompt (c: ) "ipconfig /release" "ipconfig /renew" |

Re: [Merged] Linksys Befsr41 4 port router
Hope this makes sense, Under Control Panel/Network/Configuration it lists the following installed:-ADMtek AN983 10/100 Mbps Fast Ethernet Adapter and TCP/IP ADMtek AN983 10/100 Mbps Fast Ethernet Adapter, then in Control Panel/System/Device Manager again its ADMtek AN983 10/100 Mbps Fast Ethernat Adapter, but, the box the card was in says:- www.safecom.cn , Lan card dual speed 10/100 Mbps, no mention of ADMtek.
|
Re: [Merged] Linksys Befsr41 4 port router
The network card will be seen by the PC in terms of the chipset that is used n the card - ADMtek, rather than the manufacturer, so that's OK.
If you have tried everything I've suggested above, I'm at a loss as to why you can't get ethernet to work on it. It's drastic but can you do a backup of data on the PC and reformat it to clean manufacturer settings? After that the only thing I can suggest is getting a new network card. |
Re: [Merged] Linksys Befsr41 4 port router
Just typed in IPCONFIG/all to PC (the not working one) and it comes back with 'cannot read IP configuration'
---------- Post added at 16:19 ---------- Previous post was at 15:51 ---------- Just powered everything down, rebooted and it all works, many thanks to all. |
Re: [Merged] Linksys Befsr41 4 port router
Back Again !
When I try to access the router info via http://192.168.1.1 drop down options are available for everything except the 'setup' option and the page never seems to be fully loaded, any suggestions ? |

- not sure what you mean by 'doesn't seem to be fully loaded'?? |
Re: [Merged] Linksys Befsr41 4 port router
What browser are you launching the page in and what fails to load?
Have you tried going here? |
Re: [Merged] Linksys Befsr41 4 port router
Under the Setup tab there is a 'basic setup' tab which will not drop down and the scale at the bottom of the page (showing how fast/much a web page is loading) does not complete
|
Re: [Merged] Linksys Befsr41 4 port router
Is this within internet explorer?
|
Re: [Merged] Linksys Befsr41 4 port router
Yes
|
Re: [Merged] Linksys Befsr41 4 port router
Can you check that in IE, tools, internet options, connection, lan settings, that you have nothing ticked or entered on that page
do you run a firewall at all? ---------- Post added at 19:00 ---------- Previous post was at 18:58 ---------- Did you try the link in my post above? The one that says going here |
Re: [Merged] Linksys Befsr41 4 port router
Nothing ticked in Tools etc and Yes Norton Firewall..
|
Re: [Merged] Linksys Befsr41 4 port router
Can you turn off the firewall (set it to not run at windows startup), reboot and try again?
|
Re: [Merged] Linksys Befsr41 4 port router
Yes, thats it, I can now access the set up tab, thanks.
|
Re: [Merged] Linksys Befsr41 4 port router
Looks like you need to check your settings in the norton firewall then.
