i got NTL Broadband, i bought new Laptop and i want net connection,both in my pc and laptop. you can chk ma laptop spec;

my mate told me to buy wireless cable modem. i am new to this stuff, dunno lot about it. can you tell me which one?.

Also, does ntl provide with wireless cable modem if i ring them? does it charge?

:welcome:

You'll need a wireless Cable Router to go with the modem NTL supply. You can't use an ADSL modem with NTL nor one they don't supply.

Then you just plug your router into the NTL modem, once the NTL connection is running, set the router up and then you'll effectively have wireless internet.

That LT has integrated wifi (g) but make sure it's turned on by pressing Fn+F8 before trying to find networks!

Details of the ntl router recommendation (actiontec) but as ntl don't support it why bother with their tie in. Linksys seems quite popular on CF.

pc world selling a linksys wireless router with usb wireless adaptor for £60

wether its the cheapset price or not i can't say ive not looked around but you might wish to consider it.

I have the WRT54GSUK with my NTL modem. I run a PC and two laptops with it. One laptop has built in wireless and t'other has a card in the slot. All works perfectly.

One important bit of advice though: make sure you hide your network otherwise you might find your neighbour logging in! I'm not that sure how to explain how do to that (had to get someone to do it for me) but someone on here will tell you. What made me get it done was my nephew came to visit with his mobile phone that had internet connection and within 5 seconds he'd logged into my network!! Frightening if you have dodgy people lving nearby :erm:

should do, if your laptops got built in wireless u wont need that usb adaptor that comes with the pcworld offer, Nothing to stop you buying a different router, depends if you want a usb wireless adaptor as well you could use the usb adaptor with the desktop if you wanted to use wireless on that rather than wired.

as for netgear i recently replaced a cheapo safecom wireless card (dunno if it was the card or the driver but it was playing up a lot) with a netgear one (wg511t, my laptop doesnt have builtin wireless) and so far im extremely satisifed with its performance and all the problems i was having with the wireless connection before have gone. Im connecting to a belkin router btw.

linksys are usally pretty good to ive got an old linksys wireless card laying around somewhere that still works fine.

netgear, belkin , linksys, d-link are some of the more known brands on network hardware. I should imagine they all do a simular job.

as long as both your router and wireless device are 802.11g compatable they should work, some companies offer various technologys that allows you to get 108mbit if you certian models of their equipment together, but any 802.11g compatable card should be able to connect to any 802.11g compatable router @ around 54mbit (it may connect at a lower speed if theres a weak signal or lots of interferance to ensure reliable data transfer)

also most 801.11G routers support the older 802.11B standard (as do 802.11g cards) the difference is 802.11B based hardware can only achieve 11mbits over wireless where as 802.11G hardware can achieve a connection speed for around 54mbits.

maximum actuall transfer speed though a 802.11G wireless network will probably be somewhere around 22mbits (thats the fastest i could get though it when shifting data over a wireless lan laptop on wireless > desktop on wired) but then thats still 2x faster than ntl's top package.

You want to connect both the laptop and the desktop simultaneously to the internet... right? In this case, the easiest and best solution would be to get a router. Forget about any USB modems - you don't need one, just get a router. Wireless or not, doesn't really matter (although wireless is better as it gives you more freedom).

I've got an Actiontec Wireless Router - it's no problem, and works reasonably well connecting two laptops with the wireless connection, and one desktop through the ethernet.
However, the problem is the signal strength is LOW to VERY low if connecting from the living room - plus the max speed with Actiontec is 11MB. I see that the Linksys WRT54GSUK from PC World offers speeds of up to 54MB.
Am I likely to get a stronger signal from the Linksys router over the Actiontec, and in reality, is the 54MB speed over 11MB for a laptop going to make that much difference it's worth shelling out £50 for?
