just did a speed test..

where you can see here:

Direction - Actual Speed - True Speed (estimated)
Downstream - 4669 Kbps (583.6 KB/sec) - 5042 Kbps (inc. overheads)
Upstream - 483 Kbps (60.4 KB/sec) - 521 Kbps (inc. overheads)

now, i was on the old 3mb line, i have not tryed to upgrade my line to any of the new speeds, so have NTL upped me to the 5mb line, am i reading this wrong, is there any thing i can do to check ?

looks to me that you have been auto updated to 10 meg but either your modem of configuration cant take it.What modem do you have?

Last I heard, the 100's and 120's couldnt really cope with the 10meg service. Dunno what the crack is now thou.

Think Ntl will upgrade you to a new modem eventually :)

should i contact them or just wait :)

Re: just did a speed test..

They were flashed to a newer, capable firmware iirc. Don't quote me on that though.

Remove any router and try straight through if thats the case, Wireless B and 10mb half duplex wan ports won't give the full 10mb.

I think they're looking £50 to upgrade the modem.....a farce!

Re: just did a speed test..

no router so it cant be that, there is no way i am paying them any money to upgrade me, ive been with NTL since they took over Diamond Cable (who were in my area) if they cannnot give something back to loyal customers they can stuff!

its no my fault their modem is not upto the job, a modem that i now have to rent off of them, where as when i 1st signed up they made you buy the thing, but then they changed everything so that modem was no good and i had to get one of theirs and rent it, putting my monthly bill up in the process!

My 120 works perfectly at 10Megs with the latest firmware.

Go here http://192.168.100.1/ (user name & password = root) & click on "operation configuration". The latest firmware is:- Software Upgrade File Name : ntlhm120_ntl0002.cpr

did a test on a different site (dsl reports) and got this

Your download speed : 6464 kbps or 808 KB/sec.
Your upload speed : 440 kbps or 55 KB/sec.

this is the best speed test i seem to be able to get.

Re: just did a speed test..

When I first got 10Megs, I must have done about a dozen speed tests from different sites. The variation in results was amazing. The worst result I got was around 60kbps!!! The best result I got was from here:- http://homepage.ntlworld.com/paul.ma...?1132451901933

Have you tried downloading a large file to see what speed windows shows?

Re: just did a speed test..

just did the test you linked.

Wed, 28 Dec 2005 16:42:21 GMT
1st 512K took 844 ms = 606.6 KB/sec, approx 4998 Kbps, 4.88 Mbps
2nd 512K took 844 ms = 606.6 KB/sec, approx 4998 Kbps, 4.88 Mbps
3rd 512K took 843 ms = 607.4 KB/sec, approx 5005 Kbps, 4.89 Mbps
4th 512K took 828 ms = 618.4 KB/sec, approx 5096 Kbps, 4.98 Mbps
Overall Average Speed = approx 5024 Kbps, 4.91 Mbps

so even worse :(

Re: just did a speed test..

That looks a lot like the kinda speeds you might get from 10 base half duplex ethernet. Check on the modem's configuration to see what it's on. If it's on 10 base half duplex on the ethernet port set it to 100mbit half or full duplex and set your ethernet card to match.

Re: just did a speed test..

hi, do you mean in Device Manager - Network card ?

if so i only have the option of 10mb half duplex or 10mb full or auto, its on auto at the moment.

im not sure where i check the modem or how i should change it.

Re: just did a speed test..

just phone ntl broadband and tell them your modem keeps switching off, make sure your modem is off as they will test, they will replace it, i done that and within 2hrs i had new modem

Re: just did a speed test..

I have been experiencing some really slow speeds as of late. I have even had speeds of less than a 1mb service. So back to tech support with our Indian friends. Did all the usual checks firewall, anti virus, router etc.. but still didnt resolve my issue. SO after 20 minutes on the phone with this guy I said can you pass me through to CS where he replied "Go cancel your service then!" (Not bad as I never mentioned cancelling!!!)

Anyways after a short call to CS based at Belshill, I then proceeded to call tech support again and at last got through to the Swansea CC. The advisor there was excellent and pointed out that my Ambit 120 had rebooted itself 250 times in the past month. He then decided that obviously there was a fault with the modem and booked an engineer to replace it next week on Friday.

Why couldn't the Indian call centres have done that originally? Instead they made excuse after excuse and had me call them back 10 times over the past 3 weeks.

Anyway I got the result I wanted and hopefuly the new 250 modem will be an excellent replacement.

Re: just did a speed test..

but is my NIC card the problem seeing as someone suggested changing the settings to 100mb and i dont have that option, as i said its 10mb in half or full duplex or should i still be able to get the 10mb connection with this card.

i dont mind buying another NIC to try it out IF there is a good chance of it fixing the problem :)

to get the full 10meg you need a 10/100 Mb/s network card - the good news is that they are readily available and cheap - should be less than a tenner even from places like PC World & Maplins. :)

right, so before i moan to NTL get a new card to try! :)

Re: just did a speed test..

ok im back! :)

new card is in and i have set it to 100mb in deivice manager, i now get

2005-12-30 11:32:48 EST: 7964 / 492
Your download speed : 7964 kbps or 995.6 KB/sec.
Your upload speed : 492 kbps or 61.5 KB/sec.

so it is going faster! :)

someone said change the modem speed also, do i do that from http://192.168.100.1/ or do i have to get NTL to do it for me?

looks like the NIC is ok, you can check your modem ethernet settings from the web interface, but if it is set to 'autosense', personally I would leave it at that. Similarly I would set the NIC to 'full autonegotiation' - but it's up to you.

If it is still 'slow' after that, then it is possible your area is still needing some tweaks to the network, but nearly 8meg is better than you were getting :)

blaupunkt 30-12-2005 18:45

Re: just did a speed test..

im not sure i have 'full autonegotiation' in the options.. it goes like this

10 half
10full
100half
100full
auto

so auto is ok ?

---------- Post added at 17:45 ---------- Previous post was at 17:34 ----------

to add to my last post,

i chaged the settings to auto on the NIC and modem to autosence then re did the speed tests, the test results were just over 6000 kbps, so a slight drop, i changed it back to 100 half for both and its back upto the 8000 kbps mark.

Leave it in autonegotiate and it should attempt to connect the fastest it can, which from the PC to the router or modem should be 100M, its only 1,2 or 10M from the modem back to NTL.

BTW half duplex only allows data one way at a time, be it transmit or receive, full duplex allows both simulateously [supposedly], so the figures you get may be slightly higher but try streaming up and down at same time to check results.

i have a SB4100 do i need an upgrade, how can i tell if firmware has been updated?

i have been on the 1meg - 3 meg for last 2 - 3 years and im told i have been put onto the 10meg ? with them scores i dont think so.
