Wonder if this sort of shows that the average dsl upto 8meg user gets no more than about 2 meg on average due to distance from the exchange.

There again it could be nothing of the sort :angel:.

Shame ive just moved, and im going from the fastest in the UK to the second (Bulldgo 8mb, hopefully soon to be ADSL2) :P

That's more a case that most of the people on ADSL are stuck with BT products that max at 2Mbit. The majority of lines in the UK should do at least 4Mbit on ADSL as standard and a bit more with ADSL2 and 2+ :)

We'll see how things go when BT finally get around to releasing MaxDSL though when that'll be is a mystery to BT along with everyone else.

I don't think this is the right way of comparing "fastest" providers. Surely, the fastest should be the lowest average difference from actual to ordered speed.

Nope this shows that fastest speeds, what your saying is completly different.

If an isp (ie my bt business 512k) hits 520k it does not make it faster than a ntl 3mb connection.

Noted this was on Average of speed test results (kbps) over the LAST 7 DAYS.:rolleyes:

So only a small sample and run by the ISPs themselves :angel:

Being speedtest results the results favour NTL because of the move to 10Mb. You are getting loads of NTL top tier customers doing speed tests to see if they are getting the new speed. This will move NTL's averages up.

Many of the other ISP's speed test results are possibly done by customers who are experiencing problems such as reduced speeds and want to verify what they are actually getting. This will bring other ISP's averages down.

I've always thought dslreports' speedtest was crap with ntl anyway but thats another story. What it does show though, is that ntl is on a country-wide scale, the fastest isp.

Certainly not run by ISPs themselves.

NTL do not host any of these speedtest servers.

Looking at the current market it probably is fair to say ntl are the fastest isp, I believe their 10mbit certianly has higher coverage then 8mbit/24mbit xDSL services.

It's in London only at the moment. So for those in the rest on the country it's a case of coming soon .
Thats 24 meg for £24.00 plus your phone line i think. So whats the cost of the phone line ?

I dont need a phone line for my connection :)

Hrm well I tried to be there but they refused to provision their service to me for some unknown reason.

Andy re: phone calls, people are increasingly using their broadband internet connections and VoIP. A fair few ntl customers use broadband only and make their phone calls through it :)

I didn't have any choice in my case, think ntl are the local cableco and sadly this place was built when they were in the middle of going technically bankrupt.

I've heard plenty about Be and while yeah for sure they can provide higher speeds they still have a way to go in their rollout. When they have their coverage a bit higher maybe they'll take the crown :)

I heard of it but you obviously havent educated yourself on some technical aspects of what you get.

Almost all ntl customers could pull 10 meg if downloading from the right source at a good time of day, their is no distance dependant problems on synch speeds, (read the other isps section with zitianaki's issues)

Ntl dispite not covering the whole country do cover a lot more then these 24mbit llu isp's and the coverage of 24mbit radius must be very small.

Finally you would struggle to get a 24mbit downstream in 1 thread, so the speedtests they use wouldnt necessairly give you 24mbit and push their stats up.

My point is i can have a cable modem with no i repeat no telephone line. I cannot say the same for adsl yet ;)

Bet you all expected me to knock NTL when i left them :LOL:

I also Believe you have to be within 300m of the exchange to get the full speed, and apparently the speed goes down rapidly the further away you get :confused:

Even now that i dont have the discount i still will be a customer of NTL.

My phone works fine No need to change that then.

My broadband works fine and will be unlimited from Jan :) No need to change that then

NTL dont do a pvr at the moment and i need one so Need to change that then Sky +


All in all i am happy with my service it works and works well so just because i no longer have a discount does not mean i need to change my supplier. I dont mind paying the going rate that NTL ask i i think the level of service is worth that amount.

Yeah I was just asking heh I wouldnt pull away just because a discount ends if I was happy with service.

Back on BE 24meg zitianaki has posted his experience in the other isps forum and he was close enough to get full 8meg on normal adsl, but when they switched him over not only did he synch at 10meg (only 2meg over) but he also suffered from massive instability so decided to go back to 8meg synch.

With NTL you have to admit if it all works it works well. As bill says you dont need a discount if it works well
