You dont get messages on MSN from random people saying stuff like

"Heya baby I read your profile and am interested, wanna cam?"

My profile is empty :D

Don't take things too literally - it was only a joke!

Lets face it the reason why MSN Messenger is so popular amungst teenagers and the like, is that it has something that appeals to everyone. AIM is just too plain, and needs bringing into the 21st century.

I'm sure I read that yahoo messenger users will soon be able to talk to msn messengers - and presumably vice versa.

Sometimes I can't login under my primary messenger address, but still can with my fileservers one.

Yep they are working on allowing the two platforms to communicate with each other.
Think it's posted on here somewhere lol ;)

There are multiple MSN servers around the world. If one or a few of them fall over, that will prevent some people connecting but not others. It just depends which one your account lives on.

It's a shame I can't swap them then - 'cos it's always the one that I use the least that keeps on working :)

About flaming time, there is a standard for instant messaging (Googletalk uses it). Nice to see M$ finally thinking about joining the party. Hopefully we will end up in a situation where everyone can talk to everyone and you just use the client you prefer.

I wonder whether we'd put up with a situation where owners of Binatone /Phillips/whoever phones could only make calls to friends and family with the same brand of handset in their house.

Hopefully, although it's worth bearing in mind that Google are the only large IM provider that use the "standard".

IIRC, there is a huge beaurocracy that defines and protects the standards used to allow phones to communicate.

Re: MSN Messenger Not Working

Here is where it gets interesting, my gf like most others is having problems getting into the MSN service, she has 7.5.0322 like most of us here, now I installed a run from folder version of 6.2, which signs in fine.

Also me on 7.5.0322 signs in fine, now if it was just accounts surely she would be unable still to sign in.

You have to set up a new MSN Passport account and use your gmail as the identifying email address associated with it. You don't have to use Hotmail with MSN - I have two Passports, both purely for use with Messenger, and neither of them is Hotmail. One is ntlworld and the other is mac.com. ;)
