Getting a Teryon 210 changed ?

Sent an E-mail to ntl ref the Teryon 210 being not upto the 10 Mbit speed..

Here is the reply:

Under normal circumstances your general browsing will not be affected by the loss from maximum you are seeing. Only when downloading will you see the difference. The 10mbit connection is an up to service depending on a number of variables; location, your pc, source etc
Please monitor your connection speed as necessary

Dear Support,
It appears from using the speed tests you mention below that my connection speed is nowhere near the 10 Mbits that I'm paying for...
The maximum speed I get through my network interface (10/100/1000 cat5) is approx 6 Mbits as monitored by Windows XP itself. The speed tests that I've downloaded and run only show the speed topping out at arund 3.5 Mbits.
Since my Teryon 210 cable modem only has a 10Mbit ethernet port this is to be expected.
As you can see from the forums on
www.cableforum.co.uk the Teryon Terajet 210 is not upto delivering 10 Mbits.
Read about it here:
http://www.cableforum.co.uk/board/showthread.php?t=39811
So, please can my modem be changed for a 10 Mbit compatible one ?
Regards,
Dozzer

Hi
Thank you for your recent e-mail.
With broadband connections, you are not simply measuring the speed of the cable modem, you are measuring the amount of available bandwidth between you, and the location of the file or speed test site in question. Bandwidth can be simply thought of as the size and space left in the Internet-Network pipe that the information is being sent down.
There are several ways that you can assess your cable modem speed - however, not all are completely accurate. You can assess download speed by retrieving a large file from a UK based site (important to avoid transatlantic traffic) in order to view the speed reported by Windows Explorer. You must remember that this speed test can be invalidated because it will begin downloading the file while you are still choosing a download directory and filename, so it often overestimates your download speed immediately after you click ok.
Another way of assessing speed would be to visit web sites that have speed tests embedded within the web page.
Examples:
1)
www.numion.com
2) http://homepage.ntlworld.com/robin.d.h.walker/speedtest.html
However, there are also specially designed downloadable software speed tests.
It may be considered more accurate to use such a specialised downloadable test as have been completely designed for UK broadband connections from ntl: Broadband (and other UK ISP's).
One such test available from
http://www.vantage.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/
carries out the following:
Tests ping response times to major servers
Tests download speeds
Tests Cache page-request time
Produces Trace Routes
Retrieves IPConfig settings
It is worth noting that many upload speed tests are invalidated by the presence of a transparent web proxy cache - (used to speed up web browsing), so you should disregard the upload results. However, tests for measuring uploads speeds are available from
http://www.pcpitstop.com/internet/bandwidthup.asp
ntl does not endorse any speed test sites or applications.
I hope the above answers your query, however, should you need further assistance, please don't hesitate to contact us again.
Regards
Richard

SO... no help there then!

No offence intended to anyone but the Email support from NTL is usually pretty useless, have you tried phoning?

I think you can pay £50 to get it changed, but personally i think they should do it for free. Is it an Ntl owned modem or do you own it yourself ?

I think you will find that this brand of modem is customer owned.

could be - but not necessarily - mine is ntl owned, but I don't think it is going to last much longer - smells a bit hot!

AFAIK I never paid for the modem... so it must still be owned by ntl - I've had it for years.

I think I'll tell them it's "smells of burning" and hopefully they'll send me a new one. If I have to pay then I'll do the usual... and threaten to go with another ISP that does a "free" modem. hehe

They will send an engineer out to fix it if your lucky. They can't just send you a modem in the post.

this may seem a stupid question however i want clarifcation as ive had this question sooo many times and no one has been able to give me a direct answer let alone a reason for it.

here goes:-
is the Teraon 210 capable to the 10mb speed?

ive not noticed a big diff since the upgrade should I?

You should notice at least double the download speed of the 3Mb service. Its never going to quite as good as an ntl:250 that has a 100Mb/s ethernet port (the tJ210 has a 10Mbps half-duplex port) but you would probably only see the difference on a fast speedtest site not in general use - you should get 7-8Mbps which is not quite 10Mbps.

Other people report more significant problems such as download stalling/ pausing and modem rebooting - but it generally agreed this is not just a modem problem (ntl cable or router issue for example).

My SB3100 which has a half duplex port was useless at browsing when downloading at full speed(5-6mb) in newsgroups. So i would say it's not really 10Mb compatible. Get it changed somehow :)

Re: Getting a Teryon 210 changed ?

i phoned up on tuesday, spoke to some guy who had several excuses cant remember them now usuall stuff, rain, wind, god, firewalls etc. Anyway he went away and said he would look at my rebooting history?? anyway I dont know what he found but as soon as he cam back he put me straight through to someone to get an engineer out (hopefull of a replacment), however you never know tho. But someone techy at last I hope, who may actually know whats going on.

Usally I do have a router however thats been out of the equasion for about 2 weeks now (physically disconnected) and if I rememeber right it has a full 100mb wan port (linksys) however thats my net mail to check.

Anyone got any further advice would love to hear from you guys and ps the probs discussed over is what iv been having just didnt realise anyone else was they gave me the impression it was only me (yeh I should have known) and coudnt put my finger on it at the time.

I have this modem too. It years old now. Upgraded to 10MB and I can get a steady 1.05MB per second through it no problems if downloading multiple files. Am very happy and will stay with it for now.
