Hemel Loss of Service

As per this post, Hemel customers may be experiencing some loss of service.

Re: Hemel Loss of Service

There's also a rather terse warning on the NTL Service status page.

...but according to the NTL status page, the problem was resolved within 5 minutes!

They've fixed it now (the status page, that is). Now shown as 'on-going'.

You can also find it in the bar at the bottom of the page

Re: Hemel Loss of Service

Cheers for that, my postcode is shown in there as one of the areas affected so that also answers that for me. Could be a long wait!!

If you look at the status page, it lists the affected postcodes.

I'm in HP2 and although my 10mb is still working, it's very unreliable. Webpages fail to load or load very slowly and download speeds pulsate between full on and zero.

I have a complete loss of service (WD4)

Re: Hemel Loss of Service

Complete loss here too, rumours at work here are suggesting that cables have been melted etc.!! could be down for months!!! hope we get some info. once its safe for them to monitor the damage.

Paul 13-12-2005 11:21

Re: Hemel Loss of Service

Even if cables have melted you will not be looking at months - it doesn't take that long to drag new ones in. :)

The service status page has changed. NTL are currently awaiting permission to enter the building and assess the damage.

Most of the fires are now out, just small container fires are now being tackled and residents and business owners are now being escorted back to their properties according to the BBC News website.

I'm in HP3 and I've almost got full service back. No intermittent signal now, (as of 5:20pm today) but it's now stuck on News24, which was the last channel set!

Hey ho, could be worse.
Anyone know if I should fiddle with it, or leave it to sort itself out?

Cheers

Re: Hemel Loss of Service

I wouldn't fiddle as the engineers won't know the full extent of the damage to the infrastructure.

No worries. Guess I can wait a few more days. At least I have something watchable now instead of the 3 minute intermittent signal which I'd had for the last few days. Still, it's a sign that things are improving.

EDIT: Oddly, I've found I can access channels through the "guide" button, just not with the "forward/back" buttons or keypad.

Cheers

Hey Alex!
Thats not fair!! ;)

Mine was off for two days and most of Hemel, you must have been extremely lucky!

All working now tho :)
Well Done NTL.

PS Alex what connection speed were u on? as my brother lives in Fletcher Way and he noticed no problems either!
He is on 1meg service, wondering if lower speed customers use a different segment of network possibly?

Im a 10Meg whore!! (and I love it)

According to Digital Spy, the headend is severly damaged and they haven't been allowed access to the building. Maybe something has been re-routed?

Here's the article:

BT had the major fire / meltdown in their exchange in Birmingham? That was all up and running in days.

My TV and BB were working again when I tried them about 8pm last night. The TV froze occasionally but I'm hoping this will go away when they've fully repaired the site :erm:

Re: Hemel Loss of Service

A team of engineers and assessors under police escort were allowed onto the ntl site yesterday evening to review the damage. Initial evaluation indicates the building is structurally intact but has sustained extensive damage to the occupational areas and infrastructure such as doors, windows, ceilings etc. The technical areas have sustained limited damage and engineers have effected repairs to start the air-conditioning, as a consequence Network operations are still operational.

Please note, however, that some outages may still be ongoing whilst ntl engineers work towards a resolution. They are doing everything possible to restore service quickly.

Occupationally it is estimated that the building will be uninhabitable for some time to come due to the damage. A recovery plan is being put together to remove critical items from the site.

Telco is very different from broadband cable, lots more potential for rerouting of cabling, hell could have brought a mobile exchange onsite.

Also if it was a core site would have required extensive fibre splicing, etc, but still feasible.

Let's see how long it takes them to get it sorted, fair to say that all that can be done will be to get services back 100% as soon as possible. Doing pretty well so far all things considered.
