*All* ntl Cap Discussion (part 4)

Well, the situation with regard to ntl capping has changed slightly now, so it is probably time for a new thread.

The situation as it stands at the moment:
ntl offer the following packages and usage allowances/ caps (whatever you want to call them) to new customers.
1mbps - 3gig cap
2mpbs- 30gig cap
10mbps- 75gig cap

There are customers who are currently on 300kbps and according to the following email received they have the option of going to a 512k unlimited package:

Quote:

Great news about your ntl Broadband service
You recently told us that the usage allowance of your Broadband service is important to you, so I'm delighted to tell you that we are increasing your service to an unlimited monthly usage allowance*. This means there are no limits to the amount of data you use every month. This is part of our ongoing commitment to provide the best choice & value Broadband service in the UK.

More speed, unlimited usage - same price!
We're also increasing the speed of your ntl Broadband service from 300K to 512K for the same monthly price! You don't have to do anything - we'll automatically upgrade your service by the end of December. Your monthly bill will also be changed to show Unlimited 512K, at the same monthly price of £17.99.

We hope you enjoy your new unlimited faster Broadband service!

Yours sincerely,

Bill Goodland
Internet Director
Customers who are currently on 3meg can/ will be able to upgrade to 10meg and the cap increases from 30gig to 75gig. For any discussion of the 10meg upgrade, please see the 10meg upgrades thread.

Now... let's let the cap discussion commence again (for the 4th time :p)

Re: *all* ntl Cap Discussion (part 4)

I think what must be clear by the fact that this discussion is now at part 4 is that people generally are NOT happy with the cap. I'm on 10mb and now i am expected to stay within the 75 limit (I doubt it). So what does that look like? About 2.5 gig per day! GET REAL NTL.

I have already done 20 gigs according to my router since December 1st. Watch a few film trailers, download a few bits and bobs, emails with 2mb attachments from work, kids surfing, me surfing, a bit of online gaming, it soon mounts up.

One can only hope that NTL take a realistic stance with this otherwise they will loose customers, not in the next few months because there arent that many options but i expect that before the end of 2006 ISP's will offer either much more generous data packages or go for unlimited. this could be the next intra ISP war moving from speed to data allowances. Frankly I'm sorry I just dont want nor expect to have either time or usage caps on the service, it doesnt happen on the TV service or the radio should be the same with the internet.

Actually, if you look at the previous cap threads, you'll find relatively few people have posted on them. This, to me, indicates that most members either don't care about the cap, or agree with it (I suspect it's the former).

As today is the 11th you're fine having done 20GB since December 1st, on track for about 60GB this month :)

You'll also note that there were a lot more unlimited deals a year ago than there are now, and as the speeds go up but the costs to ISPs (specifically ADSL) don't go down, and prices consumers expect to pay don't I wouldn't expect that to change ;)

i alrleady done 52GB is 6 days now i have to control 23GB for 24days :(
i dont see the point of upgrading 300k users to 512k because their speed is nearly the same, if they put 1meg unlimited that would b great, i think they should put back 3meg tier for £25/month and decrese 2meg price or 2meg become 3meg at the same price price but unlimited :D

Re: *all* ntl Cap Discussion (part 4)

I think most people would be happy with 2-3mb unlimited for 37.99. Or as a lot of people have suggested, keep the peak hours capped, but make the off peak hours unlimited.

Chrysalis 11-12-2005 14:16

Re: *all* ntl Cap Discussion (part 4)

I still find ntl's handling of this very bad, in addition to the lack of a time of day cap observe the following.

They are brainwashing people into thinking speed means more then content. I can forsee a flourish of people who want speed but use less downgrading next year when all 3 tiers are upgraded losing ntl revenue and this is how it is currently.

17.99 - 3 gig or 150gig
24.99 - 30 gig
37.99 (34.99) - 75 gig

Here is how I think it should be.

This is what I think should be not actual plans

17.99 - 512kbit unmetered or 2 mbit 10 gig cap (2 gig peak)
24.99 - 1mbit unmetered or 5 mbit 50 gig cap (5 gig peak)
37.99 - 2mbit unmetered or 10 mbit 150 gig cap (15 gig peak)
49.99 - 3mbit unmetered or 10 mbit 250 gig cap (30 gig peak)

Old rule of thumb there will be people taking up unmetered who wont rape it 24/7 so there is profit to be made there, and the higher prices add revenue for upgrades, 250gig isnt that competetive compared to llu competition but it at least is offset by the speed advantage over llu. Peak I would define as 4pm to midnight weekdays and 8am to midnight weekends.

I would define peak as the time when most traffic exists which can be any time of night or day. Offering unlimited traffic in your off-peak hours of midnight to 4pm can severely impact on customers who need to use their connection at those times. Just think about the serious bandwidth hogs who would queue up downloads to utilize all those off-peak hours and who allow their upstream bandwidth to be used by people who are not NTL customers and don't contribute a penny to the costs of maintaining the NTL networks. The end result would probably be that your so called peak hours have lower traffic than your off-peak hours.

Really who cares though the point of a cap should be to avoid severe service affect to existing customers while not breaking the bank.

Not really the customer's problem if ntl offer more than they can afford to handle, averting congestion while controlling costs should be the aim (which is why customers are assigned x kbps) the quieter times where bandwidth is underused are wastes of this bandwidth which costs the same pretty much whatever and really should be utilised as much as is practical.

If people can be convinced to move their downloads outside the peak times, which will stay as peak times whatever your preconception as lighter users demanding responsiveness still vastly outnumber the uber leechers, that means a better service and less investment required to avoid heavy congestion at peak times.

Peak is and will always remain 4pm - midnight Monday to Friday, and pretty much all day apart from the early hours over the weekend.

Just to summarise, the bandwidth utilisation in the early hours tends to be half what it is at peak, why waste it?

If need be traffic shaping can be employed in these offpeak times to ensure that http and gaming traffic is still prioritised, so that even with what you seem to think will be rampant leeching in these times those applications that need responsiveness will still be ok.

Regarding overuse of upload - I haven't seen any 10Mbit customers complaining of poor upstream performance yet :) At the time of my leaving certain 'safeguards' were being considered to protect upstream, some of which had even been tested with very good results over a year ago. While none of these were live when I left who's to say they aren't now?

QoS is really the future - just look at the rise of MPLS enabled networks to offer the traffic control and classification that legacy ATM networks could provide but over a fully IP network. Bandwidth will be heavily utilised on networks but thanks to the QoS offered from MPLS and other mechanisms real time traffic that needs the responsiveness will get it while heavy file transfer protocols can eat up as much as is left over :)

according to my NET Traffic Meter, it says that i have downloaded more than 75 gigs, the only time it was used for 3 days of streaming for most haunted live, however i don't think thats downloaded all that, or am i looking at the wrong thing. lol

DieDieMyDarling 12-12-2005 16:59

Re: *all* ntl Cap Discussion (part 4)

I think there's two important factors in this argument.

1 - More and more people are moving to Newsgroups, people that never would have messed with them before. I myself started using newsgroups this year, having always been wary of them before that, due to it being an overcomplicated way of downloading files. But as more and more people move to newsgroups it lowers the amount of upstream used, they don't need a constant upstream max out, just to keep a steady download speed (apart from the upstream that supports the acks).

2 - Most if not all of the people that i personally know, who use a lot (40+GB a month) of bandwidth, do so overnight, including myself. All the people that have already been leeching have been doing so overnight, and as Ignition says, the peak hours still use up double the bandwidth of the off peak hours. So surely the hours of midnight - 8am can handle the leeching/mass downloading? And if they still prioritise http and gaming, then most people won't realise any problems, as those downloading overnight will not be sitting there watching a byte by byte speed readout, they'll be in bed safe in the knowledge that their files will be done for the morning.

Sorry I snipped it but agree with what you said, I got annoyed earlier I was watching a bbc stream at my sister's house and it started skipping on 256kbit, they are on the 1mbit package. I tried it again at home and was the same but slightly less skipping, I tried juggling proxies but it made no difference. If they cant stop a 256kbit stream skipping their is some clear over saturation of bandwidth which is rather annoying considering the caps are supposed to manage this problem.

Same I download overnight, it is pretty depressing if I attempt it during the evening. During the evening I will only do basic web browsing and email's.

no i think you will find its more about no ones been charged more than thier standard bill yet

i know most of my friends and family switched to ntl broadband on the ( fixed bill side of their promise ) when you start getting people charged extra for exceeding these limits is when the real fun will start

i and most of them dont care about ultra fast conections just about the bill being fixed

I suspect this is because theyve allready left, like I know a good 5 or so had done who spoke to me via PM's or I'd read the letters, doubtfull they'll come back here once leaving.

I also think alot of us have shut up about the cap because either like me

#1 they are waiting to leave,me personally as soon as the football season ends will look into what else is around

#2 because theyve settled with the 512k unlimited untill something better comes which ntl have stated will happen.

#3 ntl havent actually acted on what theyre getting, like I know some ntl users elsewhere havent been capped or sent letters.

I'm sure as hell people wont be happy in paying a £30+ pm package when other people they know on other isps have cheaper packages and theyre getting more use from them. And surely as net tv channels do get into streaming content which 2006 is looking likely and also more net based watch on demand services come out this will be the bulk of users who need more than 30-75gb per month.

---------- Post added at 22:44 ---------- Previous post was at 22:25 ----------

also since ntl have stopped telling customers over the phone that "NO we wont ever use that cap against you,the cap is to bring us inline with other isps and will never be used" line, and actually starting telling people its capped.Probably bought them a few subscribers but also lost respect of others.Ive stopped recommending ntl to friends and family, having got easily over 10 users for their tv/phone and net package over my 5 or so years using them.

I feel we had a great run but now if someone says "your on ntl what do you think" I tell them its currently limited in what you can use,ntl from what I and other users can make out only want people who surf.

I guess the unlimited £18 a month isnt that bad.but I'm sure users could and will find cheaper and will find faster than 512k.The other packages people will need to watch their use,and for the money theyre paying I feel theyre better elsewhere.

Since when did being honest lose respect? Oh well perhaps they should lie again if admitting that their products are capped buys a few customers but loses the respect of others. Or your English is a bit cack and I've completely misunderstood you.

Unlimited downloads from January?

I just got an email from NTL advertising various broadband things, and it included this:

"Unlimited downloads
From January, your ntl Broadband service will have unlimited downloads, so you can surf the internet for as long as you like. "

Does that mean there will no longer be a cap on downloads from January, or is it some subtle marketing speak that really means there will be restrictions on downloads?

Re: Unlimited downloads from January?

I'm on the 2Mbyte service. But just changed a couple of weeks ago (from 1Mbyte) and the email suggests I'm on the 1Mbyte service. Some more quotes from it ...

"We're improving your broadband service. We're giving you loads of extra value at no extra cost"

"If you upgrade your Broadband service you'll get Broadband Plus at no extra cost. For just £7 more per month you could get twice the speed with our unlimited 2Mb Broadband service and over £30 a month of free online entertainment. Go to www.ntlworld.com/upgrade to upgrade now. "

Email sender is "NTL_Customer_Update@newsletter.ntlworld.com" and it is a "glossy" HTML formatted email with graphics etc so don't think it is spoofed.

If you look at our Nov 8th news item you will see this in the last bit.

Quote:

Cable Forum also believe that ntl have plans to offer a number of lower speed ‘uncapped’ services. They have already indicated that heavy users will be moved to a 512Kbps uncapped service at £17.99, we believe that further services for £24.99 and £37.99 will also be offered, the most likely speeds being 1Mbps and 2Mbps. We will of course keep you informed as more information becomes available.
This seems to confirm that the 1 meg is becoming uncapped, and the 2 meg as well. Don't expect the 10 meg to be uncapped. :)

Re: Unlimited downloads from January?

Sounds a bit funny, they can't have unlimited downloads on all tarifs aswell as upgrading them all to 10mbit. Hopefully they'll go down the Telewest route and have various uncapped tarifs at different speeds.

:edit: http://www.alchemyworx.com/ntl/broad...c05/index2.htm <-- that appears to be the email for 2mbit users, also says unlimited downloads. Also if you replace the number at the end upto 4 it seems to cover all tarifs. This is from "4" which I guess is the 512k service?

What will be interesting is if some poor soul pays for unlimited 2meg at 37.99 and his neighbour leeches 600gig on 10mbit and gets no contact from ntl. My meaning is if ntl are going to start all these tiers they need to get their finger out and apply the metering properly so people get their fair share and provide the means to watch your usage.

grubbymitts 13-12-2005 19:55

Re: Unlimited downloads from January?

change of policy maybe? Everyone assumes, as we've all been told, that NTL will up everyone to 10mb speeds - but maybe they won't. Maybe it is cheaper and more cost effective (due to such problems as 100/120 modems not liking the new speed and replacement costs) to keep everyone on the same tarrifs they were on before, but give people unlimited downloads (I bet they bite your ass with usage policy after a while) and let the customer upgrade when they want to.

Personally, I want 2mb unlimited. Downloading is fine at that speed and so is surfing (when the damn proxy plays right!)

true, but http://www.alchemyworx.com/ntl/broad...c05/index2.htm does say no extra cost, so they shouldn't raise the price to £37.99. Besides, that price is far too much when you look at other companies offering similar packages.

I agree 2mb unlimited is available below £24.99 on adsl, even considering the cost of getting phone lines installed becomes worth while when the savings are taken into account. Then you have ukonline expanding offering up to 24mb for only £29.99 & they have a sensible cap (500gb). NTL really need to be realistic with prices & caps

So let me just get this stright.

NTL might be offering 1 and 2 meg at the same price "if i read it correcly" as they do now but for unlimited.

And still there are complaints and crys of "it's not good enough:Yikes:".

Well whatever way this arguement goes it still amounts to the same thing, NTL are trying to control the way we use the services. Someone commented on my earlier post that i will probably do about 60 gigs this month, YES I KNOW that, it's Christmas and there's a lot of parties and stuff happening so i am not online as often. I still contend that 2.5gigs a day is utter crap. It's so sad... permanent conection but now download limits, so really what's the point? Sorry NTL, you need to get your system sorted to support usage or else cut the speeds so that we do what WE want.

But to be truthfull i was considering changing my supplier to a unlimited one. This has just stopped me.

Well done NTL if it's true.

Um - Why the hell should I pay for it - it should be free ;):D

p.s. I expect free blank dvd's and all manner of stuff from ntl:D

I still contend that 2.5gigs a day is utter crap. It's so sad... permanent conection but now download limits, so really what's the point? Sorry NTL, you need to get your system sorted to support usage or else cut the speeds so that we do what WE want.

Unfortunately you pay them to use their network under their conditions. If you don't agree with them you're not obligated to pay them.

I pay road tax, etc, still doesn't mean I can do 150mph down the motorway.

Sadly like everything else that we rent yes, rent you don't actually buy anything, there are conditions attached to the manner in which you use the product.

If you wish you could buy the entire internet, that way you could certainly use it any way you see fit. Until you own the entire network end to end though you have to obey the rules set by ntl, who in turn obey the rules set by their providers, who in turn... etc.

512k @ £14.99 with a 1 Gb per month usage allowance.
up to 1 Mb @ £17.99 unlimited
up to 2 Mb @ £24.99 unlimited

With them offering 2mb for 24.99, does that not open the way for 3mb @ 34/7.99? Or is it just the basic fact that the network (or any network for that matter) can't handle 3mb unlimited?

When wil NTL provide a cable soloution that people actually want and have a need for?????

Why cant they just offer a decent broadband option, say 2Mb:1Mb.
They should realy advertise it as unidirectional bradband, whats the point of having 10Mb download speeds if you are limited to a pathetic 512kbps upload or less.

Give me 2048/2048 unlimited any day of the week over 10Mb/0.5Mb.

Looks like there will be a whole heap of people 'downgrading' to 2Mb just to leech 500Gb a month. Maybe with all thier service level tiers we will be able to hide a 'custom' config file once more....

An Unlimited 2mb service is nice. However, the maximum you can get out of the 2mbit service is far higher than the cap on the 10mbit service. I think they should reconsider the caps for the 10mbit service too.

£24.99 - 75gb
£29.99 - 150gb
£34.99 - 200gb

I'd prob go for the £24.99 or £29.99 level.

They already do. The vast majority of people don't have an insane desire to download the entire internet.

Nor do I but 15-30k/sec uploads is not realy broadband is it? It doesnt take much to eat up even 512kbps with a www server, streaming radio and maybe a couple of video feeds going out. Not to mention game servers.

I guess you don't know much about how cable (or adsl) works then ?
I know enough to know that the network is capable for far more than 15k a second. It seems silly to have an extreme downstream and a very small upstream. I dont want 10Mb SDSL but if many coutries in the EU and the US can manage 1-2Mb uploads why cant we?

A whole heap ? - somehow I doubt it. There are enough people here and on other site moaning about caps.

or maybe not since that's illegal. Any more posts on *that* subject will be removed. That last comment was ment to be a touch tonge in cheek, as I have already had 'conversations' with NTL over this in the past. I dont recomend defauding NTL either not if you dont want to be prosecuted.

Well they may not know what they're doing, but offering 1mb and 2mb unlimited services is a step in the right direction, and for that i'll praise them for doing the right thing. Personally i'm hoping for 3mb unlimited at 37.99, but i'd make do with 2mb for 24.99. :D

grubbymitts2 14-12-2005 10:59

Re: *all* ntl Cap Discussion (part 4)

I think they are thinking along the lines of those that have 10mb will be able to stream the HD content that NTL and a few others are probably thinking of broadcasting.
At this kind of quality content would be unwatchable at the lower ends of the broadband model, but fine at 10mb+. But you have the 75gb cap - so, NTL nicely charge you on top for these services (pay per view sort of thing) and this doesn't affect your 75gb usage.

The lower tier/unlimited model is in line with other companies offering similar packages - simple competition economics. Fair Usage still applies, so if you are constantly strangling your upload (those that don't use Bit Torrent properly) and affecting people nearby, or downloading 24/7 at full speed then I think they will crack down - even Bulldog and AOL do this.

Chrysalis 14-12-2005 12:23

Re: *all* ntl Cap Discussion (part 4)

I would probably goto 2meg unlimited at 24.99 if that was rolled out, my reasons would be (a) here at least I only get near 10meg speeds at twilight hours now and rarely upload so the speed advantages are mostly cosmetic for me. (b) the amount you can download is heavily disproportionate, the cap would be effectively 600gig on 24.99 and 75 gig on 37.99 although I will probably only go above 75 gig 1 in every 3 months but peace of mind is better. I am slightly dissapointed by this tho, its a move to continute to get new customers and without network upgrades will just slow things down more. Also a bit odd this would happen soon after people have been throttled down to 512kbit.

I can assure you I didn't "cut off my nose". The reason I left was in protest about the introduction of the caps, the MEANS by which they were introduced and the fact that they were enforced unfairly, with only some customers being contacted.

I'd leave again, NTL are a company and the ONLY means I have to register a protest with them is to remove my custom from them if they cannot give me what I want. I removed my custom and I've always asserted that with the exception of the caps NTL were fine for me, now that they have (IF they have) removed them, I no longer need to make that protest and will move back.

With CONSTANT p2p on a 2mb line (i.e ~200kbps for 24hours x 30 days) you would download ~500Gb a month which is SUBSTANTIALLY over the cap, and that doesn't take into account the 50Gb or so you would be uploading either

Now just imagine how much damage someone doing 5x that would do to NTL's network

mcmanic 14-12-2005 13:27

Re: *all* ntl Cap Discussion (part 4)

2Meg unlimited will suit me fine also, i've never seen 10meg yet even though i got it so paying £30+ for a capped service and not achieving full speed like others that are to me is a waste of cash. 3meg speeds was perfect, 2meg Unlimited will be even better.

These stupid speeds which alot of us cannot obtain are a waste of time, a nice stable constant 24/7 unlimited cheaper service is all i require.

Bring it on is all i have to say

It wouldn't surprise me, but surely the sensible thing would be for ntl to forget past crimes against caps, as there are now official unlimited services available for those customers.

I still find it a little surprising that they aren't offering a 37.99 unlimited service. I'd have thought if 2mb was going to be the fastest unlimited service then surely they'd have made that the 37.99 service. They may not be too happy if lots of people downgrade to 2mb and pay £13 a month less as a result.

Simple competition economics. When other companies are offering the same - and sometimes better - service for cheaper than you, then it would be commercial suicide to raise your equivalent service's prices.

30gb a month is 10X what you are allowed currently with 1mb - that's probably the reason for the downgrade, though it does seem strange to move you up in November and then downgrade you in less than a month.

Had the 1MB sevices had a 30gb cap for new customers not the 3gb, I would have taken that! As it was I took the 2MB.
Soon as the pricing settels down I'll proberly downgrade my connection. Even 512k would be enuff... to me its about prices.

Whats I want to know is does this mean NTL will be changeing to similar priceing like Telewests 512/2 1mb/4mb 2/10mb unmited set up that they have at the moment?

They should launch an assault on the penny pinchers at BT with the unlimited options and BT's billing of people over caps, it would make for good publicity, but obviously that will never happen unless we are talking about just on the ntl channel.

Have to laugh 10 mb 75gb cap which you can use in approx 21 hours. 2mb unlimited you can download the same 75gb in just under 4.5 days, works out approx 500gb you can download in a month. Big question why not just make the cap on 10mb 500gb, that would stop the obvious migration from 10mb to 2mb.

if the cap was larger on 10meg then yeah i would happily pay what i'm paying now and stay at 10meg, but now it seems that 2meg unlimited may be available, hell even 1meg unlimited if no 2meg then i'll happily downgrade yet download more and pay NTL less.

Who losses out?, not me thats for sure

NEW! NTL Unlimited Downloads

Both 1 and 2meg services are going unlimited (NO CAP) come January.
Prices are unchanged. :Yikes:

I seem to remember "The Bloke in the Pub" did say that everyone would be happy by the end of this year.

Oh good!I've been having trouble keeping to the 3GB cap this last month..due entirely to son wanting to play WOW.This should make it a little less stressful...hopefully.

It's not so long ago that I was pleased as punch at my brand new 600kbs connection with a 1Gb per day cap - all for a measly £25 ;)

Well done NTL :):):tu::tu:

This is why i'm surprised they didn't offer a 37.99 unlimited deal. A lot of people will just downgrade now, i for one definitely will.

Re: NEW! NTL Unlimited Downloads

Does this mean they will not upgrade 2mb to 10mb as planned? Or will they still introduce 10mb with 30gb limit @ £24.99?
