Another PC added to my network

Is there anyway I can restrict the access to my oldest lads computer from my router? He's downloading loads of films, he's just downloaded 3 versions of grand theft auto, he's going to get me hung by NTL if he carries on like he is, there's no point in talking to him because he'll just do it more, Ive tried taking the cable out of the back of the router but he just puts it back in again.

Take_both_ ends of the cable out and take it away, Nidge! ;-)

Depends what the router is; some routers will control individual connections. RTFM! Go into the router configuration and see what it does, and do one other thing while you're doing that - change the password before no. 1 son discovers that _he_ could do that as well, and stop you...

If you router supports it, only allow your mac address for access

How will I know which connection is which?

How do I access the router settings?

Graham M 08-12-2005 18:59

Re: Another PC added to my network

You mean a Linksys then? :D I dont have one myself, best thing is to look through the config for "Access Control" or something similar unless anyone else can come up with something better.

Re: Another PC added to my network

If its a linksys, you could do this, although I'm sure others let you too.
Set the main router config page password to only one you know.
Then log in to the router and take his Pc out of the list of permitted connections.

Re: Another PC added to my network

192.168.1.1 will let u access the config page. If you haven't changed the password, it will be admin...leave the username bit blank

I can't seem to access the router settings.

Hom3r 08-12-2005 19:44

Re: Another PC added to my network

try 192.168.2.1

Also check the router documentation too.

Will it come under net adapter?

Re: Another PC added to my network

LinkSys routers default user and passwords are admin/admin as far as my knowledge goes.

Hope this helps.

but theres always the rest button on the back for if you dont know the password, however it will reset all of the routers settings to the factory defaults.

Re: Another PC added to my network

And after doing all that with the router keep checking to see how often the router goes offline when you have been out and he unplugs it from the modem and connects his PC direct to the modem with the spare patch lead he has lying about.

Why not... take the modem power lead out with you?

How old is he?

As it is linksys you could use many ways to restrict his access.. port forwarding would be my choice so he can still access normoal web services...

---------- Post added at 00:15 ---------- Previous post was at 00:14 ----------

or actually... threaten him to within an inch of his internet connection...

How do you port forward? I need something what I can turn his connection off without taking the cable out of the back leaving my connection still running happily.

Nothing in there Neil, tried the right click on my computer but there are no tabs in there like what the post said.

Look in here under the user guide in the Access Restrictions Tab

http://www-uk.linksys.com/servlet/Sa...VisitorWrapper

You can control the time he can access it and block certain ports so he can only surf the web rather than use peer2peer software etc..

It might be an idea to put the router in a lockable, but well ventillated box or cupboard. to prevent him from hitting the reset button. Obviously, you need to make sure there are holes for any cables though.

.....or put him in there? :)

Make sure he has a straw to breathe through though....

Sorted it all thanks, I got the IP address of the router then go into access restrictions then blocked him for a few days, now I know how to do it I can set times when he'll be allowed on the net, at the moment it's set to disable.:D :D

Of course - he could always rip the cable from the back of the router and plug direct into his PC - bypassing the router and leaving your other PC's without internet access! :)

He's well away from my PC, he's in his bedroom and I'm downstairs that's the reason for the wireless router.

How about blocking his MAC address, should be able to do that in a wireless router.

Manual config. ie configging a different IP address and bypassing the DHCP.
As I said, remove the power lead from the modem!

Re: Another PC added to my network

Nidge,

if he's on the network wireless why not make a different security key or even better you must be able to disable the wireless totally ;) and another thing that you might try is setting up CLIENT IP filters if the linksys got those but I think they have so perhaps thats an idea as well. other then that just connect your own pc to the modem directly when you dont want him using it

He'll just plug it back in again, I need to make it as though his computer is acting the goat so he can't access the net.

Disable his wireless card's PCI slot (and onboard LAN) in BIOS?

Re: Another PC added to my network

how about a discussion and finding some compromise on usage? Failing that set up a separate phoneline for his computer and get him to pay the bill if he wants access?

v0id 10-12-2005 12:28

Re: Another PC added to my network

Illiminate the wireless network, and plug the Modem straight into your PC
