how do i prove

hello,

i am new at this and am also at work so i cant give you any details about my computer.

anyway i am using ntl 1mb broadband but i am having problems with it. the problem is that sometimes it works, sometimes it works and then stops, and sometimes it does not work at all, it always works if u reset the modem. anyway i been phoning the tech support people loads and they come up with 3 different problems with my computer plus one idea about how to use my broadband

1: Its My Firewall.. if that was true how come it works sometimes with no problems, surely it would not work at all. i dont want to run it without a firewall but have disabled it and it does the same thing
2: its my USB port: i change my connection over to a network card, when i phoned them up to help me reconnect, the lady said there was a problem with my modem and i have to phone and book an engineer. when i did this, they said there was nothing wrong
3: that i had a virus: i am using norton suite and it found nothing

they suggusted that when i turn my computer off, to turn my modem off and then just before i start my computer on, turn my modem on

is there anyway i can prove that its the modem and not my computer as my parents want to get rid of it all together?

rob

Re: how do i prove

firstly i would connect to the modem using ethernet if you can.

secondly i would boot the PC into safe mode and then run a speed test. This will ensure that there is no firewall or any applications running in the back ground

For this to work surely it needs to be Safe Mode with Networking?

Did you reboot the modem after switching from using the USB cable to using an ethernet cable? If not, then you will need to do so.

Oh, and when using the modem via an ethernet cable, you won't need to install any drivers for the modem if you are running Windows XP (and 2000 if I remember correctly)

Thats because many usb chipsets decide to mess about with power saving and stuff.

I think Its time for ntl to make ethernet the default installation method. Lets face it it would cut down calls to tech support.

Worked for a adsl providor with usb only modems and a large % of calls where lost driver discs, problems after re-install of OS etc. With ethernet an xp pro pc will pick up the ethernet internet connection and configure it automatically most of the time during install.

I think they started recommending E/Net when the 250 Modems came out. Might be wrong but I'm sure I saw something before I left with the differences and the new installer disc with Ethernet recommended was one of them.

Ive always used Ethernet and even with a fresh install of XP, you plug it in and internet explorer picks up the connection straight off. No configuring, nothing ;)

Re: how do i prove

It may not have anything to do with it but I see lots of posts that seem to suggest that Norton can cause as many problems as it purports to fix.

The sometimes it works and sometimes it don't seems to be a common denominator of the threads I have read. The Norton app usually accredited to being the problem maker is NIS.

It is reported to be a b****r to to get off your puter. Some saying the only way is a complete reinstall.

I've had no personal experience and frankly as I wouldn't let any of that c**p near my machine, I hope not to gain any.

Re: how do i prove

that all maybe true but what firewall do you recommend then? plus i use all the other bits of their suite (anti-virus and the such like)

Re: how do i prove

It sounds like you have a signal problem to me, I had the same problem, you need to ring NTL and ask them to ping your modem to see the Db level of the signal.

IF Db is:

-5 or below, OR, +5 or above

this might be your problem.

Re: how do i prove

here are some tips to make ethernet work for you:

]Plug the modem into your ethernet card (remove the usb cable from pc and modem first).

]Go to Start>Control Panel>Network Connections>.

]Look at the connections that are available, and pick the one that is currently active, then right click on it and select properties.

]You will see a scrollable box with a list of protocols inside it, scroll to "tcp/ip" and double click it.

]Now make sure that obtain ip address automaticly and obtain dns server automaticly are checked.

If they are and it still wont work then you may need to use https://autoreg.autoregister.net/cgi/cablereg

hope this helps

BTW you dont need any cable modem drivers when using ethernet

Firewall:
http://www.kerio.com/dwn/kpf2-en-win.exe

AVG:
http://free.grisoft.com/doc/I+need+help

They continue to work for me and have done for years.

There's plenty of free anti spyware out there but if you want to lob out a small fee then Counterspy and/or Webroot seem to be good.

Re: how do i prove

just to confirm...when you've swapped from usb to ethernet, that you have shutdown the pc, removed all of the leads to the cable modem, including the catv, leave em out for 10 or so seconds, reconnect the catv, ethernet cable, then power. wait for the sync and rdy to lock on... then restart the pc. should be job done!!! there's nothing on the Broadband installer cd that you need to run the connection via ethernet, the modem drivers on the cd are for usb connections only.
if your gonna go down the removal of NIS route, and have any problems removing it.. there's a removal tool on the symantec website. there's a list of tools available for various symantec products, listed here: http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT...01092114452606

I'd agree with mick on the firewall and AV recommendations... there's also Avast antivirus and Zonealarm firewall to give you a few options. might also be worth running a few antispyware programs like the ewido security suite (free for 14 days), adaware, spybot, ms antispyware and praps CCleaner. once you've downloaded, installed and updated em.. run them one at a time in safe mode.
and if your gonna try a speed test, it might be worth running one in normal mode first... then again in safe mode with networking... and compare the results.

obviously still could be summit wrong with the cable modem itself... which would need to be sorted out by NTL.
