disconnections

Hi

I have been on the 2mb service for the last 2 and a bit years, i upgraded to the 10mb service last week and had no problems until today. i keep getting disconnected every minute or so for a few seconds and then it connects back again. this is a real pain when trying to download updates etc.

i have tried the connection both with and without my router (see below for router model). when the disconnection happens the modem seems to reboot itself.

Is it somthing that can be sorted with the help of all the wonderful people here or would i have to call cs/ts. im in the luton area with the LU4 postcode.

The following was taken from the cm itself.

Type : Ambit ETH/USB Combo Cable Modem

Cable modem : Ambit Cable Modem

MAC address : **:**:**:**:**:**

IP address : **.**.**.***

Downstream Receive Power Level : 7.55 dBmv

Downstream SNR : 37.15 dB

Upstream Transmit Power Level : 43.00 dBmv

Many thanks in advance
wakar

Re: disconnections

can we get a mod or admin in here.. to hide this guys mac and ip addy.

This will no doubt be merged into the current 10meg discussion, but to answer your question we need to know what modem you have.

I personally suspect an Ambit 120 or below, in which case your going to have to get on the blower to NTL and change your modem for the new Ambit 250 as older modems are proving to be a pain in the back passage on 10meg

No problem. To save time you might want to disconnect the modem then phone up saying how it likes to die half the time. This will ensure an engineer visit. As I said the 120's and below are prone to reboots and a firmware update has proven to not of worked. Demand a new modem, and demand the Ambit 250. ;)

Let us know how you get on...

There should not be a reason for me to demand the 250 as the CS/TS guy said that the modem will have to be changed to a Ambit 250 :D and this will be done on wednesday

Re: disconnections

Hey, hoping someone will still read this post! ;p

I'm getting the identical problem to this guy. I upgraded my NTL to 10mb on Monday. Modem reset, all fine, 850k speeds, happy with, all fine throughout Tuesday as well, then suddenly since 2pm today (Wednesday) Its been resetting about every 5minutes.

Does this sound like Modem being not up to it as well? Seems weird it worked fine for a couple of days.
Anyway, how do i find out what model modem i have? I've looked all over and can't work it out. Sorry if its already been asked, and i hope some of you are up late ;)

Ta.

Ta.

Look at the bottom of your modem. The make and model is there.

Re: disconnections

Gah, so would you suggest ringing up first thing tommorow and asking for an engineer and specifically asking for a 250?
Depressing thing is, they probably won't even send him out to mid-next-week now its Thursday. :(

Edit: didnt see the "?" yea its silver ntl home 100

Re: disconnections

morning all,

Got a call from the engineer at 4:38pm to say that he would be at my house at 5pm. Come 5pm true his word he turns up. I mentioned to him that CS told me to box the old one ready for replacement but he wanted to test old one. As the fiber optic cable was laying loose he connected that to his little handheld device and noticed low power levels so got up and said i might as well replace the modem. so off he went and got out a new ntl:250 modem. he ran a few test and hey presto all works fine now.

Well done NTL  thats 2 occasions, in nearly 3 years, i've had to have an engineer out and twice they managed to fix the problem with causing any more problems :tu:

Re: disconnections

Another customer with a NTL silver 100 modem with the rebooting problems. Think I've counted about 20 people so far with the same modem and same problems.
In the majority of cases, where the customer has had their 100 replaced with a new 'blue' 250 the problem has gone away.

See this thread:

Re: disconnections

Been on the phone to CS and TS all day.
Finally convinced them that, no restarting my computer wasn't going to solve the problem, and managed to get an Engineer visiting tommorow "around 1-5" to "Check the connection"

Just gotta hope that he actually listens and replaces modem, i may have to show him this forum ;)

From what i've heard though, most people seem to have got the modem when they requested it, so i have high hopes mine will be replaced.

Fingers crossed

Might be worth adding, i specifically requested a 250 , to which the reply was "NTL now only distribute the 250, so that's what you will get" , if that's worth anything to anyone.

Re: disconnections

I've got exactly the same problem. Just phoned tech support from my mobile as we dont have an ntl land line.

The tech support person tried to convince me that rebooting the pc and modem will fix my problem which I kindly questioned until I realised I was getting nowhere.

I was asked to call back when my connection is down again.

I've got an ntl:home 100 modem. The sync and ready lights are constantly flashing when the connection is offline.

Code:

Downstream Receive Power Level : 14.75 dBmv
Downstream SNR : 33.63 dB
Upstream Transmit Power Level : 41.00 dBmv

Not happy. :( Can someone from ntl help??? :D

Quote:

1)What, specifically, is your issue?
Cable modem dropping connection.

a) Is there a specific time that this issue is most prevalent?
Anytime of the day or night.

b) How long has this issue been going on? (days, weeks, months etc)
Months, but it's getting more and more annoying.

2) Do you have cable TV? If so, is there any reception degradation?
No ntl TV or any other services.

3) Have you contacted customer support about this problem? If so, what did they say?
Phoned tech support, tried rebooting all the equipment which ***temporarily*** allowed the modem to get a connection. But it is still dropping out every now and then.

4) What troubleshooting steps have you taken to resolve this problem? (aka: if you haven't tried to help yourself, why should *we* help you?)
Looks to me like its a power issue, not much I can do?

5 Who you are and what you have
a) Where in the country are you?
Wiltshire
b) What is your operating system?
XP
c) What is your home network setup? Provide details.
Linksys Wireless Router (BEFW11S4)
d) If you have more than one computer, is the problem occuring on all other machines?
Yes, the cable modem is loosing connection affecting all machines.
e) Are you running a firewall of any sort? Have you ever installed one? Did you try to turn it off during troubleshooting?
N/A

Ok, someone stole my edit button. :D

Just got off the phone with tech support for the 3rd time tonight - the kind lady has scheduled an engineer to come out for monday.

Re: disconnections

NTL Tech just been and gone, with a nice new 250 modem. The guy was compeltely oblivious to the problem which i told him about, and says he will "spread the word".

I have now gone from 6-7mb to 9.5-10mb consistently from FTPs.

This seems to solve the problem! (my download off mirror.ac.uk is on 1150kb/s)

Demand a new modem people, seems to sort it.

Re: disconnections

Job done: :) Though it cost me £6.50 in phone calls! :(

Downstream Receive Power Level : -0.17 dBmv
Downstream SNR : 33.74 dB
Upstream Transmit Power Level : 39.00 dBmv

and I quote: "It shouldn't have worked atall before now."

Re: disconnections

Well, its still broken & constantly dropping offline.

After numerous phone calls ntl are coming out friday with a new modem. All we do is browse the web so its not crapping out under load + we're only on the 1meg service.

But if its not the modem then Im sure they'll have fun trying to work out what it is. Though it'll probably cost me even more in phone calls. :(

Re: disconnections

Two ntl guys came out today, they couldn't find a fault from the road to our house so they gave us a new modem (ntlhome 250). Seems ok so far, probably cost me £10 in phone calls to tech support though. :/

I wish to thank everyone in this post as it has pointed out the problem I have been having for some time. The modem randomly droping connection (TJ210), however the tech line are compltely useless as all they kept doig was turning my firewall of (idiots do they not know).

I feel another pointless phone call coming up, unless some nice usefull mod may be able to help ;) i really dont rellish the idea of phoneing those idiots again for them to turn my firewall of again!!!!!!!!

oh the joys of being with NTL
