Redundant

Just to let you all know that from the end of December i will no longer be working for NTL. Was given my 30 days notice of redundancy this morning :).

So after 13 years it goodbye to NTL.

The funny thing is i am not upset 1 little bit :)

13 years? :-)

Hope you got a good package mate!

I was made redundant two years ago and only got the gov statuary payment - not much after 5 years! Funny thing is - I'm now working again for the same company!

ntls redundancy for those that joined before 2002 is very good. I don't think a union could get a better deal if they tried!

Sorry Bill, but I think you should ask them to reconsider. I mean, can they afford to be losing experienced engineers in the North West given connection and email issues recently. I think you should refuse to go :D

Here's hoping you walk straight into another job and can blow your redundancy package!

Thanks to every one for the nice remarks.

Yes its NTL's loss and i am over the moon with the package they have offered me.

I have my fingers in a few pies so watch this space :) and i will continue to post on here as i will be a customer of NTL. Even without my employee package.

They have not treated me badly and i wish those that remain a happy time with them.

With the redundnacy package that ntl people like Bill are receiving, I have no doubt it'll be one of the best Christmas' ever!

I've been keeping my news on the employee forum, but I too have been made redundant. :D:D:D:D I can tell you now, I'm as happy as Bill is too!!! :cleader:

wow, gobsmacked doesn't describe this, I know it is a small sample of NTL staff that we see on here, but they always willing to help & offer advice, because of focus on the customer. Some good ones have already been 'let go'.

In Bill C's & OB's case how on earth can they consider losing such experience with the Telewest merger imminent.

Never mind, I'm glad that you both feel this is best for you, personally, sincere good wishes for the future, I just can't believe the shortsightedness of 'beancounters'

this is something I find hard to take - in my opinion it is jobs that are redundant, not people, if the job still exists I don't think any company should be able to make the incumbent redundant, to make way for a 'cheaper' option.

Sadly I know how naiive that view is :(

Well Bill, what a shocker logging in tonight.
I am happy to see that you have the right attitude, not so much the loss of a job, more the start of a new adventure, been there done that many times.
I know you wonââ‚Âà ‚¬ÃƒÂ¢Ã¢â‚¬Å¾Ã‚¢t have any problem finding new employment as good people are hard to find in this day and age.

Good to see that we are not losing you from the forum.
As I havenââ‚ƚ¬Ã¢â€žÂ¢t had any problems with the services I only come to the forum for enjoyment and your sense of humour and northern wit has given me many laughs.

Re: Redundant

I'm glad things have worked out for you Bill and OB, I wanted redundancy during the "Planning for Growth" fiasco. I didn't get it so walked out of the company after 12 and a half years with nothing.

I walked straight into another job, unfortunately I was made redundant after just 8 months. I was a little worried but soon had a smile on my face, when the redunddancy package for my 8 month job was about the same as I would of got for 12 and a half years in ntl.

Constantly reducing employees is the only way ntl are meeting thier targets. Very few of the jobs they advertise are technical these days, you only need to have a look at the website to see most are gathering statistics. It will get to a point when there will be no one available to fix a fault but a glut to of emplyees to report that statistic.

There's fewer and fewer out there fixing things these days.

Wonder just how legal that is as they have access to our account details on a Database that is supposed to be for NTL/NTL staff. Would be nice to see if this is a technical issues NTL have no experience of handling like the fact soon they will have no technical staff to service the network. Contractors could hold the company to ransome for higher fees by letting the network slip or taking longer to fix, where as their own staff would have the job fixed quickly. Its a cut throat business and unless you have your own guys you never know what is round the corner.

It's completely legal. The Data Protection Act doesn't require that access to data is restricted to persons employed by the company who hold the data, only that it is restricted to appropriate persons.

Re: Redundant

Best of luck to both.

Can not really understand why ntl is replacing some of its best staff with more contractors from Kelly Services!!

They should try making a few of the useless muppets in top dog roles redundant instead, that must be the biggest most needless drain on resources. Do they really need a director of customer services at all 3 call centres and 3 communications managers at each? All must be on pretty healthy salaries too!

Certainally have to say Bill sorted a prob for me last year and really seemed to know his stuff so definately ntls loss.

Glad the redundancy package is good for both!

Just wonder when those fols in high places at NTL realise teh network is going to grind to a halt if they don't look after it and to look after it they need engineers.

Also as they only have so many streets cabled sooner or later they will saturate their area and cannot streatch any further without laying new cable.

I was made redundant from my company on 31st Oct. It was a shock.
I felt bitter, and the usual questions - why me etc.
I've registered with several recruitment agencies, and after being out of work for five weeks, have now been offered another position with another company - at a higher salary, and with much better benefits.
Believe me - as one door closes, another opens...

Simon Duffy should be made redundant :(

Then we get ignition, bill and all the others back probably all under simon's salary level.

Those that say that they couldn't careless or they are happy about being made redundant, wait until you get stuff all from the government.

I only get £200 per month and pay out £400, so early next year I'll be going in the red in my Bank

david yeah I had that affect when I lost a job few years back, they were paying me for 6 weeks after I left and everything looked cushy and I got too comfortable, even took my time to claim the dole. Situation soon changed when I realised once income stops cash drops fast and lifestyle has to change.

But good luck to you Bill and I hope you still find the time to visit here.

Just picked up on this thread. Pleased that both Bill and OB are happy with the redundancy packages on offer, but stunned that the BeanCounters once again rule. I wish both of you well for the future.

At some stage companies need to wake up to the fact that they are only as good as their staff. You can only outsource and subcontract so much. At some stage expertise is essential in house so you can still resolve issues, deveolop solutions and progress. But as ever the shortsighted, approach simpy seems each member of staff as a cost to be reduced.

Well said! bean counters ARE taking over the world - but at the wish of shareholders $$$$ Profits first $$$$ Customer service second $$$ Staff third.

Good luck to everyone who has been kicked out or simply walked out. I walked out myself on Friday after nearly 9 years with the company, I'd been hoping for redundancy but I just couldn't stand it any longer. The role I did was technical support for the network engineers but over the last 12 months this has been diminished by ignorant and obtuse directors (one in particular). The company is realling going down the pan. Outsourcing is the key and I think you'll see an even bigger shift towards this next year, especially on the network engineer and switch engineer side.

Couldn't be happier to have left and they can stick their redundancy up their @rse!!!

We might not have agreed that much in the past, but i can't agree with you more here. Bill C and Ignition were the sole reasons i haven't gone mad sometimes, they have both helped me and it astonishes me that 2 people who helped to placate customers arn't looked after better. I will honestly miss your helpfulness Bill and am still grateful for the help i received from you last month. My sincerest best wishes for your next job and hopefully you will end up with employers more deserving.

Cheers again, best of luck :(

Just how many people are left keeping ntl running?

I hope there's a warning before the TV service stops altogether because there's no-one there keeping it working.

Guys, I wasn't pushed I jumped ;)

Now work for a company that treats me like a human being, isn't anywhere near as politically charged, and where I get so so so much less 'excrement' along with better working environment and substantially higher salary and benefits and a more interesting job.

So no thanks I'll stay where I am, not to mention that I've moved home in between and have no intention of commuting from London to Hampshire.

In that case, Goodbye and thanks for the fish :P

Seriously though, you have been a great help to me, and no doubt countless others, ntl's loss is going to be another companies gain, I hope you stick around, as you're a diamond, and a top member of this community :-)

Thanks again, and good luck in the future.
