[Merged] Wireless Setup Problems
 

help i am trying to fit a belkin wireless access point. i currently have ntl modem with an e/net cable running into my computer. the instructions say i need to use another e/net point on my computer to connect to my wap. the problem is i have no other e/net connection on my computer.
However, i have a spare usb port on the ntl modem and computer:Yikes:

Yeah, you need the ntl modem connected to the pc via ethernet for the easy setup cd thing, it looks on your pc for internet connections and then copies the settings onto the eeproms.

Without the ethernet port it's a bit tricky, suppose it can be done manually but the instructions don't say how and the web page config is silly unless you know what you're looking for. Try ringing Belkin?

I may be getting this wrong but there is a difference between a wireless access point and a wireless router. A router I think has dhcp built in to be able to give out a ip address.

I think you'll have to connect the access point to a switch or to a 2nd ethernet point in the computer to get it to work.

Failinmg that where did you buy it from? Will they allow you to exchange it for a wireless router?

If you bought it online you have 10 days or so to exchange anything you bought.

help i have just fitted an additional ethernet card in pc to try and fit wireless access point. I now have a message on my toolbar stating local area connection4 a network cable is unplugged. I have placed the driver that i got with it into the A drive.

ps. if i break the computer the kids will make me homeless at xmas HELP!:Yikes:

Additional ethernet card - so you now have two fitted :confused: Both cards will need to have an ethernet cable plugged in, and that ethernet cable needs to be connected at the other end to live devices (router, wireless adaptor, etc). If not you will get the cable unplugged message.

WHY R U CONFUSED I BELIEVE THAT BECAUSE THE WIRELESS ACCESS POINT ONLY CAN BE CONNECTED BY ETHERNET AND THE ORIGINAL ETHERNET CARD WAS REQUIRED TO CONNECT NTL B/BAND I WAS LEFT WITH NO ALTERNITVE. wOULD U NOT AGREE, BY THE WAY AS U CAN C I AM NO PC XPERT ANY SUGGESTIONS GREATLY APPRECIATED

Ah right so you intend internet connection sharing, with the current PC acting as the gateway between your other PCs (or consoles) and the internet.

i.e.
ntl broadband - wired - Main PC ethernet card #1
Main PC new ethernet card #2 - wired - Wireless access point > wirless network.

Is that arrangement what you are trying to do? Perhaps instead the connection between the broadband and Main PC is in fact USB?

Perhaps you can confirm the operating system (windows) version, and whether you are using a Set Top Box or Cable Modem for the ntl broadband.

Sorry, but I'm having some difficulty grasping exactly what you are trying to set up. Please answer the following questions.

Is your ntl broadband supplied via a modem, or a Set Top Box

Do you have only one computer in the house?

How are you currently connecting the computer to broadband - before you attempted to install the wireless - is that USB

Are you simply trying to get a wireless, instead of wired, connection between the computer and your ntl broadband (which you presently have connected by wires - USB?), or are you trying to get more than one computer in the house connected (a network)?

What is the make and model of the wireless access point you have purchased?

Oh and please try to type without the caps lock on.

ou have only one computer in the house? son will return from uni with w/less laptop in 3 days

Click 'my network places'
Then click on 'setup a home or small office network'
Click 'next'
Click'next' again
Click next again assuming you have no disconnected hardware.
Click the optio at the top 'your computer connects directly to the internet.......
give your computer a name
leave the workgroup as MSHOME if you like but if you change it make a note of it you'll nedd it to set up the laptop.
click next on the file and printer sharing screen
click next on the next screen
then tick the option to just finish and your done.

you got it one that is the belkin product i inherited from a friend who was with BT and no longer needed it. i wish i was bt ntl doesn't seem that easy to sort out

i hope it is as easy as u suggest. Unable to try it now as my son has just come into the room the last time i tried something with the computer i blew it up and therefore everybody has banned me from messing about with the pc from then. But iwant to prove them wrong but as u can imagine i am now opporating in a clandestine manner in the house or i will be homeless at xmas. will check for responses later when the coast is clear.

Right then, if that is the product, I'm very much afraid it isn't going to work for what you need, or at the very least it is going to be a major hassle to get setup and I can't be sure that it will work at all.

Reading the Belkin site the Wireless Access Point (WAP) is intended to connect to a router or switch, not to a computer. It doesn't act, as a wireless network card.

I believe you have misread the user manual http://web.belkin.com/support/downlo...130_manual.pdf under system requirements it states
I've highlighted the word you missed.

My recommendation is to scrap the WAP, and the additional ethernet card, putting it down to experience. Hopefully you didn't pay your friend too much for the WAP. You're best bet is to ebay it. Similarly you don't need the second ethernet (wired not wireless) card you've just installed.

What you really need is a wireless capable router.
Optionally (in place of the ethernet card you installed) you can fit a wireless desktop networking card to the computer or a USB wireless adapter, However if you have a ethernet wired connection using ethernet from the ntl modem to the PC then you can keep that.

Very simply your ideal network setup will need to be:
Modem <> ethernet cable <> Wireless router

Wireless router <> ethernet cable <> Desktop PC (using original RJ45 ethernet port)

Wireless router ~~ wireless ~~ laptop

There are recommendations in http://www.cableforum.co.uk/forum/article.php?a=74 for wireless routers. If you do however prefer Belkin it looks like you need to get http://catalog.belkin.com/IWCatProdu...%2Etworking%2F.

If you insist on keeping the WAP then you can try the following:

You retain the existing wired connection between the ntl modem and your main computer. Your main computer will always have to be powered on for any other laptops or wireless devices to be able to use the internet.

Connect the WAP by ethernet to the second ethernet card you have just added to your main computer.
Power on the WAP, press the reset button on the WAP for 15 seconds, then power off the WAP and power it back on.
You then need to establish communication with the WAP
I'd now reboot your main PC and the WAP. Hopefully you should have a connection. If not it's really time to cut your losses, and ditch the WAP.

If the WAP has a connection, once the laptop is available, to establish the wireless between the PC and lappy you will need to run Windows internet connection sharing wizard. Open Control Panel and run the Network Setup Wizard selecting the share connection option. Again I can't be certain what problems you will encounter ruinning this.

I really must stress that this addendum post is very much try it and see if it works. No guarantees at all that it will, sorry.

Now that I've slept on it, I realise i forgot the third option: Get a wired only router - you won't need the second ethernet card you've just fitted, but can stil use the WAP.

Your network setup would then be:

ntl modem <> ethernet cable <> wired router

wired router port #1 <> ethernet cable <> main PC (using exisitng ethernet connection)

wired router port #2 <> ethernet cable <> Wireless Access Point

Wireless Access Point ~~ wireless ~~ laptop

You may still have issues with getting the WAP setup - needing to get teh Belkin AP manager utliity run. That will be a case of "read the manual".
